A few months ago we were hanging out at Duff's Brooklyn with Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Hellyeah, Damageplan), Don Jamieson (That Metal Show) and Jose Mangin (Sirius XM Liquid Metal, MTV 2 Headbanger's Ball, Latination), and we couldn't help notice this sexy lady standing at the bar with a very cool outfit. RIP "Macho Man" Randy Savage
Today former badass pro wrestler "Macho Man" Randy Savage died at the age of 58 in Tampa, Florida. According to Police Savage had a heart attack while driving and crashed his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median through oncoming traffic and "collided head-on with a tree. He was then transported to Largo Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. His wife was also in the car but survived with "minor injuries"
"Macho Man" became very popular in the 90's thanks to his charisma and outrageous behavior while being a wrestler on the WWF and the WCW circuits. Here is what his former colleague Hulk Hogan had to say about Savage's death:
"I'm completely devastated, after over 10 years of not talking with Randy, we've finally started to talk and communicate. He had so much life in his eyes & in his spirit, I just pray that he's happy and in a better place and we miss him. We miss him a lot. I feel horrible about the ten years of having no communication. This was a tough one. I just pray that Randy's happy and in a better place and we miss him."
Here are some facts about "Macho Man" Randy Savage:
- His real name was Randall Mario Poffo.
- He was born on November 15, 1952 in Columbus, Ohio.
- Twenty championships during his professional wrestling career.
- Seven-time world champion.
- Two-time WWF Champion.
- Four-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion.
- One-time USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion.
- One-time WWF Intercontinental Champion.
- WWE named Savage the greatest Intercontinental champion of all time and credited him for bringing "a higher level of credibility to the title through his amazing in-ring performances."
- He was also the 1987 WWF King of the Ring and the 1995 WCW World War 3 winner.
RIP "Macho Man" Randy Savage, you will be missed by your family, friends, and fans! \m/

Down IV
After a short North American tour, New Orleans All-star band Down is currently busy working on their fourth studio album. After the success of their third album "Over the Under", the band knows that their rabid fans expect another masterpiece. After seeing them perform live last month here in New York City, we have no doubt that the band is entering the production of Down IV at the right time and with the right mindset.
The only obstacle the band faces is whither Rex Brown (Pantera) is still in Down. Rex was nowhere to be seen on stage while the band was on tour, instead Crowbar's bassist Patrick Bruders took over. All this after Rex announced the formation of the Kill Devil Hill supergroup with Vinnie Appice (Heaven & Hell) and Mark Zavon (Ratt, W.A.S.P., 40 Cycle Hum), and after he recently quit Arms of the Sun. This is what Rex told Metal Assault about this matter:
"This is it. I’m not doing any Down. This is my devotion right here. There’s no side gigs, or anything else that’s going on. So this is what it’s going to be for the future."
The band has not made an Official statement yet, but as soon as they do we'll let you know. For now here is a video of the band's recent show at the Best Buy Theater in Times Square, New York City.

The eighth studio offering from one of Sweden’s finest death metal exports, Surtur Rising was released in North America on March 29, 2011 via Metal Blade Records and continues to reap praise from fans and critics alike. AMON AMARTH nailed a cover spot of the April 2011 issue of Decibel Magazine and earned a 9/10 rating from Outburn who commended the band for delivering “a collection that is brimming with beefy riffs, insidious melodies, and a truly epic sense of scale.” Fearnet.com agreed saying AMON AMARTH is now “at the head of the class,” Metal Review gave it a 9.2/10 score calling it “one of the band's very best releases,” while Metal Army America offered up a grade “A” review noting, “from the Stockholm-bred riff style to frontman Johan Hegg’s Cimmerian-esque performance as growler du jour, AMON AMARTH’s Surtur Rising proves to be an essential and defining listen for band and fans alike.”

Anthrax's Joey Belladonna recording vocals for the NEW Anthrax
Anthrax have been busy working on their new album titled "Worship Music" for quiet a while now. As we all know, the band was set to release a new album in 2009 for which Dan Nelson had recorded vocals for and when they were already touring the world prior to the release, they decided to part ways with Nelson and to bring back John Bush to finish the tour. The band's intention was also to have him re-record vocals on the new album, but Bush disagreed to do so since he had no input on the creation of the album. In 2009 the great Joey Belladonna returned to Anthrax and agreed to tour with the band and to record Anthrax's 10th studio album.
Today, Joey released these images of him recording vocals for Anthrax's new album, scheduled to be released this September.
We had the chance to have a quick “Black carpet” interview with Anthrax at the recent Golden Gods Awards, in which the band confirmed their new album title and filled us in on their summer plans. Check it out!

Remembering Ronnie James Dio
One year ago the Heavy Music community lost one of the most charismatic, charming, and down to earth rockers in history. Ronnie James Dio is the emblem of Horns Up Rocks, not just because he popularized the "devil horns" (the Horns Up Rocks logo), but also because he was one of the most humble musicians ever. Not one person that had the privilege to meet Dio has one bad thing to say about him and always comment on what a great role model he was. Any musician out there reading this, should take note of Ronnie James Dio, a legend that will never be forgotten and will keep influencing musicians forever.
Here are some facts about the great Ronnie James Dio:
- RJD was an Italian-American Heavy Metal vocalist and songwriter.
- He performed with: Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his band Dio.
- Considered the most powerful singer in Heavy Metal history.
- Ranked as one of the greatest Rock vocalists of all time.
- Credited with popularizing the "devil horns" hand gesture in Metal culture.
- Prior to his death he was collaborating with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice, on a new Heaven & Hell album, which would have been the following to "The Devil You Know", released on April 28, 2009.
- Dio died of stomach cancer on May 16, 2010.
- One of the last songs he recorded was titled "Metal Will Never Die".

Sindependence Metal Bash
In the last year Horns Up Rocks has become synonymous to top notch event production within the New York City metropolitan area thanks to our ability of uniting the Heavy Music fans of the tri-state area. After the success of the March Metal Beatdown and the Dark Arts Music Festivus, we are rejoining forces with Brutal Bitches Productions and bringing you the Sindependence Metal Bash! On Saturday, July 2, 2011 we are taking over Fontana's Bar in New York City!
The event will not only celebrate America's Independence from the British, but it will also mark the release of "Death of the American Dream": the brand new album of Long Island's Heavy Music titans Lies Beneath. We are very proud of hosting this special show and to return to Manhattan for what promises to be an amazing event. Lies Beneath performed at "Hixonfest" (the first Horns Up Rocks event ever) last summer at Ace Of Clubs, and totally killed it.
Joining Lies Beneath will be Alekhine's Gun, No Remission, Ashes of Your Enemy and Eyes Like Cyanide. Additionally, the event will be hosted by Horns Up Rocks founder Jo Schüftan and Tim Martinez (DJ Tim No 37) of No Mercy Metal, and DJed by Alissa Shimansky of Brutal Bitches Productions.
Here are the artist bio's:
- Lies Beneath: A five-piece Heavy Metal band with influences ranging from Thrash, to Death Metal and Hardcore. The band offers their listeners a classic dual-guitar attack, a crushing rhythm section, blended with dynamic vocals and brooding soundscapes. Lies Beneath creates an undeniable presence and demands captivation from any audience. With the release of their new album titled "Death of the American Dream", Lies Beneath are heading towards chaotic headbanging territory.
- Alekhine's Gun: A Thrash Metal outfit from Brooklyn, New York. Blending the aggressive styles of Death and Thrash Metal with fierce in your face vocals, this band is strategically looking to make their move in the Metal scene without compromise! Come check them out!
- No Remission: A powerful 4-piece Heavy Metal band from Westchester, NY. They have proven the very meaning of perseverance in establishing themselves among the underground Tristate Metal scene. Relentless in their quest to push far beyond the barriers of mainstream predictability, this fearsome foursome has earned the respect in opening for acts Dying Fetus, Anal Cunt, and Marc Rizzo of Soulfly & Cavalera Conspiracy. The band is about to release their third full-length album titled "Through the Blackened Skies,’ which was being mixed and produced by Billy Graziadei of Brooklyn legends Biohazard. No Remission is driven in taking their music to a much larger audience.
- Ashes of Your Enemy: From the heart of New Jersey in late 2005, emerged this 5 piece metal outfit whose name alone underlines a fierce, uncompromising vision. Brought together by means of a shared concept, they collectively dug deep into their metal roots and began to structure and refine their sound. Their latest EP "Anthem" is currently in heavy rotation on Sirius XM Liquid Metal XM!
- Eyes Like Cyanide: A Hardworking New York based Heavy Metal band with all the trimmings. Now that Tracy Myzeri Gonzalez is crushing on vocals, Eyes Like Cyanide bring a brutal assault every time without any remorse, so check them out!
