This Is How Max Cavalera Met His Wife Gloria & How They Changed Heavy Music For Ever!
Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing his musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.
But who helped to shape Max's career? His wife Gloria Cavalera. Gloria actually runs her own blog called Growing Up Green and she recently posted the story about how her and Max met, and how together they changed Heavy Music forever. Read on...
"In 1986, I took on my first band, Sacred Reich. I met Jason Rainey when he was 16 years old and hanging around The Bootlegger, which was my brother, Paul, and my club in Phoenix. Jason came to me one day and told me he had a band. Of course we booked them immediately and my relationship with Sacred Reich began. Life was a snowball, with Metal spreading through the world like a changing Season. We morphed from traveling in the back of a UHaul truck, to circling the globe, tucked in a tour bus. Times were changing quickly and Sacred was soaring in popularity.
Sacred was signed to Metal Blade Records in the US and licensed to Roadrunner Records in the rest of the world. This was the beginning of my 26 year relationship with Roadrunner. One day, early in 1989, I got a phone call from the label, asking me if I would consider managing all Roadrunner bands that had no management. I declined because there were a few acts I didn't want to work with and also, I managed differently than most managers...I traveled with my bands. I wasn't taking on a lot of acts at the same time because I was the manager, tour manager, tour accountant and merchandise seller. It was a lot to handle and I didn't want to dilute the attention I was giving to my acts. I was managing Sacred, Atrophy and dabbling a bit with Forced Entry, from Seattle and did not want to spread myself thin. I did not want to be some out of touch manager sitting in an office, sending my bands out with $5 in their pockets, cramped in a van. No, I was traveling in the same condition as my bands and working my tail off to reach new heights. Touring took a good deal of dedication and I had a clear vision of where I wanted my bands to go. I couldn't do that from an office.
One day, and many times after, Monte Conner, the new A&R from Roadrunner, called me and asked me to manage a new band he had signed from Brasil. I politely refused. I had never met them before; what if we didn't get along with each other? No, I couldn't consider it. I wasn't interested in breaking the standard I had set for myself and my groups.
A couple months later, Sacred got an offer to support King Diamond at the Ritz in NYC, on Halloween night!! We were so excited! This was going to be super cool, not to mention...it was the famous Ritz Theater! I heard Sepultura would be one of the openers, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to meet them and check out their show.
When I arrived at the Ritz, I noticed many other managers checking out Sepultura. The weird thing, all the mangers came up to me and told me not to touch Sepultura, I won't say the reasoning, I felt it was discriminatory and I admit I was a bit surprised to hear the comments. As soon as the Brasilians kicked into their set, I felt such raw energy. I also got this feeling inside of me that I only felt rarely. I can't explain it. It was a sort of premonition. I sat next to Cees Wessels and said, "I will take this band for you." Cees laughed and we chatted for a bit. I went to their dressing room after their set and we all hung out. The guys didn't speak much English and I kept mixing up Max and Igor.
Their tour eventually brought them to the Mason Jar in Phoenix. Dana, Christina and me all went down early to hang out. I was shocked to discover the low level of care the Seps were receiving. For God's sake, Paulo played the entire tour with 1 pick!! Can you imagine, no one could spend a few cents and get him a pick?? They were allowed $5 a day to live on, which I could not believe. What was worse, they had a man traveling with them who said he was their manager/tour manager, but all I could see him doing was making himself a private video collection. The band didn't even have a bottle of water or a towel to wipe their face off!! It was shocking to me. When Max asked for water, this man told him, "get it yourself!" I was speechless. I took Paulo to my house and got him some picks and cruised back to the club.
I took care of the band and got them water, towels and whatever else they needed. After the show, we went to a Motel 6 and had a meeting. They asked me to manage them. I had found out their "tour manager" had signed them to a manager who managed a soul singer(she managed a female artist such as Ertha Kitt or someone similar). This was super strange to me. The band had never even met or spoke with their manager!!! I told them I didn't step on other manager's toes and they would have to free themselves before I worked with them. We said our goodbyes with big smiles on our faces...we knew we would see each other soon. In January, I received a postcard in the mail from Max. It was a Beneath the Remains card with a nice message. I did not expect it.
A month or 2 later, a deal was negotiated and their "manager" was paid a flat fee of $10,000 and the road opened up for me to work with them. And the deal I gave them??? Haha, I said I would work for free for 1 year, to see if we would get along with each other! Now, that was for the love of music!!!"
There you have it folks, the story behind how Max and Gloria Cavalera created a Metal empire! Many thanks to Gloria for allowing us to repost this awesome story. Check her blog out here: Growing Up Green

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY "Unplugs" Themselves In Los Angeles, CA - Set List & Images Available!
This past Wednesday, March 6, BLACK LABEL SOCIETY leader Zakk Wylde was the center of attention at Club Nokia in Los Angeles, California. The occasion? Wylde and his band performed a very special "unplugged" concert for an upcoming DVD entitled "Unblackened". Our friend Jamie Harvey from Grammy.com, was present at the event and put together a pretty solid review. Here are a few excerpts of her review, followed by some images of Wylde and crew. Enjoy!
- The band's concert at Club Nokia celebrated his career outside of his renowned stint with the legendary Ozzy Osbourne, summarizing his body of work with his early '90s project Pride & Glory, solo albums such as 1996's 'Book Of Shadows', and his catalog with BLS, which spans nearly 15 years.
- The BLS crowd is akin to a biker gang: They all ... and I mean all ... wear BLS back patches adorning vests and coats and BLS shirts. They refer to themselves as "chapters" based on location, and they're all part of a "family." As the chapters assembled, some seated and some standing, and some with a glass of beer or whiskey in hand, they meandered around equipment set up to both live stream the show on AXS TV and to record the performance for a live DVD/CD to be titled 'Unblackened'.
- Set List:
"Losin' Your Mind"
"The Blessed Hellride"
"Sold My Soul"
"Road Back Home"
"Spoke In The Wheel"
"House Of Doom"
"Queen Of Sorrow"
"Machine Gun Man"
"Sweet Jesus"
"In This River"
"Throwin' It All Away"
"Takillya (Estyabon)"
"Won't Find It Here"
"Rust"
"Speedball"
"I Thank You Child"
"Stillborn"

During the chat Mario discusses the bands mindset from the moment they started working on 'L'Enfant Sauvage' and how working with his brother Joe has been elemental for the success of GOJIRA. He also discussed how growing up in a small town in France helped to shape up the Duplantier brothers as musicians. Without further due, here is a video interview with one of the best drummers in Heavy Music. Enjoy!

Melodic Metal legends STRATOVARIUS are pleased to unleash their “Halcyon Days” video from the band’s latest full-length, “Nemesis”, released via earMUSIC. Hailed by the media as, “the best STRATOVARIUS album since many, many years,” by Metal Hammer Germany, “a collection of the band’s greatest hits that you never heard until now,” by Metal Underground in the US and, “the strongest STRATOVARIUS album since the beginning of the century,” by KaaosZine in Finland, STRATOVARIUS were once again able to live up to their reputation as one of the leading names of the metal genre, once again exceeding fans’ and critics’ expectations and charting all over the world: Finland: # 3, Czech Republic # 12, Switzerland # 30, Spain # 32, Germany # 41, Sweden # 44, France # 56, Norway # 56, Austria # 62, Canada # 126.
Coinciding with the band’s European tour, set to commence in Helsinki, Finland, the band today proudly reveals the video for their second single. The footage for “Halcyon Days” was shot in Lithuania by Pekka Hara, and perfectly captures the song’s theme of finding one’s peace of mind.
The band explains: “It was a really nice experience working with Pekka and his team, and Lithuania was a pleasant surprise, very friendly people there and everything worked out great. This video sets the mood of the song perfectly. And the fact is: a band is nothing without the fans."
Prior to the video shoot, the band had launched a fan competition asking their supporters to send a picture of their most prized STRATOVARIUS item. Over 100 items were sent, of which the band handpicked the 10 most original objects, which are now featured in the video. Over the course of the next weeks, STRATOVARIUS will also launch a special fan item version of the video on their official Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/stratovarius.

ANTHRAX's Charlie Benante Talks About Metal Alliance Tour & NEW Covers EP 'Anthems'!
'Anthems', Anthrax's long-awaited,
eight-track EP that pays tribute to the classic songs by some of
Anthrax's favorite bands from the 1970s, will be released in North
America on March 19 (MRI/Megaforce), and on March 22 in Europe (Nuclear
Blast). The track listing for 'Anthems'
features Rush's "Anthem," Thin Lizzy's "Jailbreak," "TNT" by AC/DC,
Boston's "Smokin'," "Big Eyes" by Cheap Trick, Journey's "Keep on
Runnin," as well as the album version and a special remix of Anthrax's
"Crawl" from the band's critically-acclaimed 2011 album 'Worship Music'.
Additionally, ANTHRAX will be headlining this year's Metal Alliance Tour. The band will be performing their classic 'Among The Living' in its entirety. Our friends over at Metal Assault conducted an interview with Charlie Benante about 'Anthems' and about Metal Alliance 2013! A few excerpts of the interview follow:
What are you up to these days, man? Just doing press for the tour?
Yeah, pretty much. And I’m also doing some artwork for t-shirts and stuff like that too.
That’s cool. So, you have this Metal Alliance Tour coming up which should be awesome, looking at that lineup.
Oh yeah. For me, going out and playing this Among The Living record, which is one of our biggest records, playing that in its entirety is a little bit of a challenge but we’re going to do it!
Usually you’ve been playing at least three songs off of that album in your set anyway, but this time you’re playing the whole thing. How much of a challenge is it actually, and how much did you have to prepare to play these songs?
I’ve been actually preparing for it, because one of the songs we haven’t really played it live. So you have to relearn how to play it and see what type of approach you’re going to put on the song too, because it’s a very, very fast song. So, I have to kind of pace myself, and it’s a challenge but I’m sure I’ll pull it off.
You’re going to play club venues across North America, which I think is perfect for Anthrax even though you play bigger venues when opening for other bands. The vibe is that much better.
I guess we just want to go and sell these places out, and basically see how that goes. Honestly, I don’t care where we play (laughs).
Coming to this new release of yours which is coming out in a couple of weeks, the ‘Anthems’ EP which has six covers, the Worship Music track ‘Crawl’ and its remix version too. How did that come about? I think a few members of Anthrax have been talking about it for a few months, so is it something that’s been in the works for a while?
What happened was, we would always record B-sides and stuff, and we had a bunch of them that were recorded musically but we didn’t really finish them. Then we were talking, and I said we should really do something with these and may be do a bit more. So I mentioned Rush, and ‘Anthem’ was the song that came out. Then we were talking about more songs and the Journey song came out. So I said I’m going to record these, do the drums and everything, and then I’ll put a scratch guitar part on it and send it. So I sent it to Scott and then Frankie got it and Joey got it, and then we just finished all the stuff that way. We were so happy with the way it was turing out that I was like, ‘Wow, I bet our fans would really like to hear this!’ And that’s how it happened. But we wanted to keep it as an EP and not a full record because we wanted to have it priced very well, you know? I mean, originally I jokingly said let’s charge $6.66, but iTunes wouldn’t do it.

Lets Celebrate All Women In Heavy Music Today, It Is International Women's Day!
About International Women's Day:
International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements. Started as a Socialist political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries, primarily Eastern Europe, Russia, and the former Soviet bloc. In many regions, the day lost its political flavor, and became simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way somewhat similar to a mixture of Mother's Day and Valentine's Day. In other regions, however, the original political and human rights theme designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.

Uh Oh! GUNS N' ROSES Frontman Axl Rose Opens His Mouth, Find Out What Came Out!
During a recent interview with Cameron Adams from HIT, GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose updated his fans on the bands plans for 2013. He also discussed his relationship with Slash back in the day. Read on...
CA: Happy New Year! You played India for the first time late last year. There must not be too many places Guns N' Roses haven't played yet - did you get a chance to see the sights?
AR: Happy New Year!
We always look forward to playing new places. Africa has always been a goal.
I definitely didn't get to see the sights as much as I'd hoped but I had a great time and loved it there. We hope to get back there for more shows as soon as we can.
CA: Will these Australian shows be an extension of the Appetite For Democracy tour? Or something different?
AR: We'll let ya know!
CA: That tour marked 25 years since Appetite was released - which is something to be proud of... you must notice how that record is discovered by new ears each year?
AR: Happy New Ears! Yes we've been very fortunate in that regard. Also surprising and equally rewarding has been how many fans around the world enjoy and sing along with our newer material live.
CA: A lot of fans were hoping for a 25th anniversary re-issue of Appetite - was that ever on the cards?
AR: I wouldn't mind re-mastering it sometime.
CA: Is there anything left in the vaults from the Appetite sessions that could see the light of day?
AR: Not that I'm aware of but it's worth a look. There aren't any new or different songs but maybe a couple versions of things that we felt didn't quite make the grade, although most of that made it out as bootlegs back in the day.
CA: Can we expect new music from GN'R in 2013 by chance?
