Former DEFTONES Bassist Chi Cheng Passes Away At The Young Age Of 42 - Rock In Peace!

We have some very sad news to report. Former DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng died last night at 3 AM in a Sacramento, CA hospital. His mother made the official announcement on Oneloveforchi.com.

"
Our dearest Family,

This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emergency [sic] room and at 3 AM today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.

He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi (website) and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.

With great love and “Much Respect!" Mom J (and Chi)

"Rest In Peace, Chi Chen" - Chino Moreno

As previously reported, Chi was in a tragic car accident on November 4, 2008. As a result, he suffered some very serious brain injuries. Ever since the accident Chi was in a state of semi-consciousness after suffering severe TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).

Our condolences go out to Chi's family, friends and all of the DEFTONES fans.

MACHINE HEAD Celebrate 10 Years Of Phil Demmel Shredding - Statements Available!

MACHINE HEAD are celebrating 10 years, which are technically 11 years, of Phil Demmel shredding with the Bay Area Metallers. Demmel is not only a key asset of MH, but he is also one of the best dudes in Metal. His guitar skills pretty much gave rebirth to the band and inspired Robb Flynn to improve his guitar skills. Here is what the band had to say about Demmel's legacy with the band:

"Seems like yesterday that Phil rolled his amp into our practice room and first jammed with us.

"I remember thinking when the jam session was over, that it felt like a perfect fit. At first, it was just going to be a temporary gig for some European festivals that we were doing. A last hurrah for Phil before he retired from music. Lucky for us (and hopefully him) he didn't retire and wanted to be in MACHINE HEAD on a permanent basis. We welcomed him into our Island of Misfit Toys with open arms!

"Ten years later, we've been through great times, trying times and down right horrible times. I would not trade any of them for anything and I'm proud to have experienced them with our Phil!

"Love you, duder, and here's to another ten years!" -
Dave McClain:
"Phil... Phillip (my Mom calls me Phillip, you can call me Phil), (my fave) Phillatio... Philthy... Philodendron... LandPhil... Drunky McDrunkerson... Sloppy McSlopperson... and last but not least... The Lemon.

"10 years...

"10 YEARS...

"10 FREAKIN' YEARS IN MACHNE HEAD!!!???

"MAN, has it flown by.

"Crazy...

"Technically, it's almost 11 years as Phil began jamming with MACHINE HEAD back in June 2002, a month after Ahrue (who?) quit. We were getting ready to do a festival run that summer to close out the 'Supercharger' tour. On the itinerary was headlining Germany's With Full Force festival for the first time, so we were playing some really cool festivals and we needed a guitarist.

"I probably wasn't quite ready mentally at the time, so while I enjoyed those first practices with Phil; it wasn't until the first show on July 1st, 2002 at The Ambassador in Dublin, Ireland that it became apparent to me. That's all it took to completely erase the memory of our old guitarist for me. Just looking stage right to see Phil rocking out and in my head saying, 'Hey, I remember THAT guy.' It was a great feeling. Right then and there I knew we had our guy.

"Phil has been in MACHINE HEAD for 10 years officially today, but I've known Phil Demmel for *cough* 26 years! Though it's hard to remember, I met Phil somewhere back in 1986, when I was 18 years old. He was in VIO-LENCE and I was in FORBIDDEN EVIL, we practiced in a Fremont, California warehouse district behind a studio / jam room called Fast 'N Furious owned by Pat Sauger and the ANNIHILATION guys. VIO-LENCE was moving in to rehearse at F 'N F and Phil and couple of the other guys came by to watch a FORBIDDEN EVIL practice. I remember liking him, he was very friendly, always smiling, and had a cool car (LOL)! I started going over to VIO-LENCE practices and watched in awe as they produced some of the most ferocious riffs and songs I'd heard. Thrash Metal bordering on Punk Rock. I LOVED it!

"Little did I realize, but the Vio-Dudes had their eyes on me to replace their then-guitarist, Troy Fua. And while Phil will insist to this day that he 'stole me away,' I happily left FORBIDDEN EVIL, eager to play in such a ferocious group, and in January 1987 I played my first show with VIO-LENCE.

"We made a heck of guitar team back then and that was something we worked at. But there was always a natural chemistry that didn't take much effort; we complemented each other's style. We started writing instantly and the riffs flowed easily. Back then in many ways we were the odd couple; Phil was, and remains, more outgoing. He could talk to most people about anything, all the chicks loved him! I was always more introverted and would lose myself in my guitar. But we weren't so odd when it came to hanging out as we partied like HELL, we RAGED, and being around him really brought me out of my shell. I looked up to him in a lot of ways. He came from a stable family that was very supportive of him in whatever he did. I didn't have any of that. It was great to see and to just be around as those things made me a better kid and later a better man.

"10 years, plus 5 years before that, plus a 10 year break-up in the middle somewhere, but we're still together singing 'Careless Whisper' whenever we get hammered!

"We've lived A LOT of life together. We've experienced more crummy two-month van tours than I care to remember, the two of us driving all night on only a few hours sleep only to end up as bed-mates in a crappy Motel 6's double bed next to Debbie Abono's bed. Entire tours eating one meal a day at Denny's, and then hoping the club would feed us, all while loading our own gear in and out of vans, then when life got good, out of trailers!

"There was no road crew back then except for Joe (our manager back then, riding in the van with us, who is still with us now!). There were fights, hilarious three-hour drunken wrestling matches, hotel rooms destroyed, more arguments than I can even remember, a lot of tears cried, and so many more good times and full-on, side-splitting belly laughs I could write a book about it. We've played A LOT of shitty clubs to 50 people, and we've stomped a mudhole in the ass of 30,000+ people countless fucking times.

"As I'm writing this, it dawned on me, we've written six albums' worth of material together, and are about to write a seventh... wow... some pretty goddamn good metal I'll tell you that.

"I'm grateful you are in MACHINE HEAD. We are lucky to have a band member like you. You're a great guitarist, a great songwriter, a great team mate, and above all a great friend.

"I love you, dude.

"Here's to 10, 15, 25 more!" -
Robb Flynn

In other MACHINE HEAD news, the band is currently busy writing music for the follow-up to 2011's 'Unto The Locust'. A late 2013 release is projected. Here is an update from Robb Flynn.

BEYOND DISHONOR Premiere Music Video For "Heisenberg"!

New Jersey Metal maniacs BEYOND DISHONOR have premiered a music video for their first single, entitled "Heisenberg", via their official YouTube channel. You should definitely watch this video below. Any fan of the hit television drama ‘Breaking Bad’ will immediately recognize that "Heisenberg" is a tribute to the popular show— complete with yellow meth lab suits, greasy cigar-smoking drug kingpins, shady factory laboratories galore and more.
"Heisenberg" is part of the band’s upcoming EP entitled 'Generations', set to be released in June 2013.

“It's an obvious homage to one of our favorite pieces of entertainment, but it is wrapped around a stronger metaphor - just as Walt perfects the formula against his better judgement, so too are we forced to find and perfect the formula for notice and respect in this tumultuous industry and genre,” states lead vocalist Reese Dunlap. “That theme is referenced throughout the song, and goes one step further in the video, where we are, in a sense, a victim of this formulaic control. It is only when we have 'perfected the formula' that we can finally escape mediocrity.”

Here is the music video for "Heisenberg":

Coming up, BEYOND DISHONOR will head out on a 13-date east coast trek beginning April 12th. David Kinkade Responds To Allegations That He Couldn't Jam Old SEPULTURA Properly

During a recent interview with us (see below), Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, ex-SEPULTURA) discussed the reasons why drummer David Kinkade left SOULFLY in December of 2012. As you can see, Max pretty much stated that Kinkade couldn't play the old songs properly so he decided it was time to find a NEW drummer. His son Zyon Cavalera (LODY KONG) is currently drumming for SOULFLY, but Max has made it very clear that he is currently searching for a permanent drummer.

Kinkade watched the interview in question and he is not happy with Max's comments. This is what he had to say about this:

"They want to slander me and they figure that since I was a note for note perfectionist, why not hit below the belt and make me look like a fool. I quit when I called bullshit on how the kids treated people? Shit and had absolutely zero respect for Soulfly. Snorting lines and blowing weed smoke into the bunks all the time. Anyone would have quit if having to deal with the Cavalera's and their kids for months on end. Marc and Tony are the only thing that holds that circus together. Good riddance."

Here is the two part interview:

UPDATE from David Kinkade after reading about all your comments all over the internet:

"I really appreciate the kind words. Unfortunately I permanently retired from music after my final tour last October. I haven’t played since October 23rd in Thailand. I sold all of my equipment and now I actually work on the railroad. Its hard work but the benefits and salary are well worth the effort. It goes to show the true colors since Max tries to make it look like I was fired lol. I actually quit on the last day of the last Euro tour because I was to become a Father and didn’t want to be away from my family anymore. I also couldn’t handle the Cavalera way anymore. The Soulfly experience literally broke my love for being a drummer. Too much drama, too many lies and not worth the time or energy. I worked my ass off to make a great record, play ALL the songs note for note and yet I’m talked about like a piece of shit. So much for the “respect”."

MARILYN MANSON Pushes The Envelope To The Extreme & Collaborates With Avril Lavigne!

Shock rocker Marilyn Manson has really shocked all of us this time around! Get this: Manson has collaborated with Avril Lavigne on a song that will be part of her fifth studio album. This news is more shocking than when he announced that he is the NEW face of
Saint Laurent (a luxury fashion house).

"The record's really diverse," Lavigne told Billboard.com. "We've got these pop-rock tunes, and then these piano ballads with orchestras.

"I have a heavier song that Marilyn Manson's on called 'Bad Girl', and then I've got a song called 'Hello Kitty' that sounds like nothing I've done before."

Dear Marilyn Manson, what were you thinking? Perhaps Lavigne offered him a lifetime supply of Absynth? Or does Manson not care about his credibility?

At least Manson will be teaming up with Alice Cooper for the "Masters of Madness" tour June 1 through 28.

Here is the initial list of tour dates:
  • 06/04 - Salt Lake City, UT - USANA Amphitheater
  • 06/23 - Pittsburgh, PA - Stage AE
  • 06/25 - St. Charles, MO - Family Arena
  • 06/28 - Rockford, IL - TBA

Is Dave Lombardo Moving Out Of SLAYER & Resurrecting GRIP INC.?

It seems like drumming legend Dave Lombardo is ready to move out of SLAYER, after the band refused to offer him a better contract (details HERE). During a recent interview with Greece's Rock Overdose, Lombardo confirmed that Casey Chaos from AMEN will be fronting a resurrected version of GRIP INC. A tour is in currently in the works, and the chances of a NEW GRIP INC. being recorded are very high.

You may recall that Lombardo formed GRIP INC. when he first left SLAYER in 1992. The band had been on and off since it formed, and their future was uncertain due to drummer Dave Lombardo's commitments with and the death of frontman Gus Chambers. Now that Lombardo's future in SLAYER is pretty shady, it makes sense for Lombardo to resurrect GRIP INC. Stay tuned as more updates become available.

Max Cavalera Pt 2: SOULFLY, The Birth Of SEPULTURA, Band Politics & Metal Passion!

Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing his musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.

Max left SEPULTURA in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Cavalera Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as SEPULTURA's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max has proven with SOULFLY that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists. Get this, SOULFLY turns 16 years old this year and have eight studio albums under their musical belt and are already working on album # 9, which will be produced by Terry Date!

Additionally, Cavalera has a NEW supergroup that features Greg Puciato from THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, Troy Sanders from MASTODON and David Elitch, former member of THE MARS VOLTA.

On Thursday, March 14, we met up with Max at his hotel room in New York City before the "MAXIMUM CAVALERA Tour" show at The Gramercy Theatre. This is part II of our in-depth interview with "El PatrĂ³n Del Metal", Max Cavalera! On part II we discuss SOULFLY's past, present and future. Additionally, we discuss the formation of SEPULTURA and Max made it very clear that his passion for Metal will keep him making music for many years to come. Check it out!

NINE INCH NAILS & BEYONCE (?) To Headline The 2013 Made In America Fest - Details Available!

Damn! It has been confirmed that NINE INCH NAILS will be headlining the 2013 Made In America Festival alongside Beyonce. What the hell? Talk about festival promoters being way too eclectic!

The Made In America Festival will return to Philadelphia for Labor Day weekend on August 31 and September 1. Jay-Z once again curated this year's roster, but will not perform unlike last year's headlining set. Tickets are on sale for American Express card members and fans of the Budweiser Made In America Facebook page. Public on sale begins Wednesday April 17.

Other performers include Queens of the Stone Age, Deadmau5, Phoenix, Calvin Harris, Empire of the Sun, Imagine Dragons, Wiz Khalifa, Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miguel, Public Enemy, Nero, 2 Chainz, Gaslight Anthem, A$AP Rocky, Walk The Moon, Solange, Feed Me, Porter Robinson, Wolfgang Gartner, Emeli Sande, Haim, Schoolboy Q, Ab Soul, GTA, Robert DeLong, Red Light, Rudimental, Aluna George, Jay Rock, Jessie Rose and TJR.

"The point of having that diversity in our music lineup we’re trying to expose the people to different types of music," says Paul Chibe, Budweiser's VP of marketing. "Much like last year, where if you never saw Pearl Jam but you're a Jay-Z fan, we want fans of Beyonce or Calvin Harris or Wiz Khalifa to have the opportunity to see Nine Inch Nails or stuff they might have seen for awhile like Public Enemy. That eclectic mix creates an opportunity for us to really show the impact of music and culture."

Again, there should be a limit when it comes to how eclectic a festival lineup should be. What do you think? Let us know at the comments section below.
