The DEFTONES Perform A Brand NEW Song & Chino Moreno Talks About The Direction Of The NEW Album!

As previously reported, the as of yet entitled NEW DEFTONES album is scheduled to be released on October 9, 2012. The follow up to the critically acclaimed 'Diamond Eyes', released on May 4, 2010, is a lethal album for the DEFTONES and they know this. This is why once again they have lined up producer Nick Raskulinecz, who also produced 'Diamond Eyes'.

Yesterday (Friday, July 27), DEFTONES performed at a private event at Warner Bros. Records in Burbank, California. During this special performance, they debuted a NEW song called "Rosemary". Here is an audio recording of "Rosemary":

Lead singer Chino Moreno told Billboard.com why the band got back to work faster than usual. "It was important that we wanted to not drag it out," he said. "We have a well-documented history of taking forever to make records. But with our last record, we did it in a really short, good amount of time, probably four or five months from the time we started writing until we finished it. For us, that was record time, so this time the idea was, 'Let's go in and start a record on this date and let's try to be finished by summertime and keep this work ethic we kind of stumbled upon on the last one,' and we did."

'Diamond Eyes' sold 62,000 copies in the US in its first week and debuted at the Number 6 position on The Billboard 200 chart. 'Diamond Eyes' was the deftones first album, since their bassist Chi Cheng had a horrific car accident on November 4, 2008. The accident left him in a comatose state. Sergio Vega recorded 'Diamond Eyes', toured with the band, and is back in the studio to record the bands seventh studio album.

Asked how the NEW DEFTONES disc sounds, Moreno told Billboard.com, "It's not a super fast or slow record. It's very dynamic. Some of my favorite things about DEFTONES are the dynamics. Yes, we're a heavy band, but we're not just in-your-face aggro the whole time, punching you in the face. There's a lot of aggression in some of the music, but there's also this very soothing element where there's a lot of soundscapes rather than attack, attack, attack the whole time. I understand that's a big part of our sound, but I really feel like we reached a peak on our dynamics on this record with those two qualities — the beauty of something and just straight, ruthless aggression."

Don't forget that the DEFTONES and SYSTEM OF A DOWN are joining forces on what will be a series of live shows, that promise to be loud and dangerous! Here is the confirmed list of tour dates:

August 2, 2012: Susquehanna Bank Center – Philadelphia, PA*

Album Cover Revealed For 'Down IV Part I: The Purple EP'; Philip Anselmo Talks About His Lyrics!

Metal forerunners DOWN will release 'Down IV Part I – The Purple EP', their first body of NEW material in five years, on September 18, 2012 via Down Records (Independent Label Group). Rolling Stone made the exclusive announcement this week with the world premiere of first single “Witchtripper,” calling it a “typically aggressive Anselmo vocal against a twisting, grinding musical backdrop.” [listen HERE!]. Adding further excitement to news of the upcoming release, Sirius XM Radio’s “Liquid Metal” also premiered the NEW single “Witchtripper” and “Misfortune Teller” to radio airwaves this week, while Revolver Magazine revealed the cover art today!

The six song EP is the first in a series of four EP’s planned for release over the next year. DOWN, which includes Philip Anselmo (Pantera) on vocals, Pepper Keenan (C.O.C.) on lead guitars, Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) on guitar, Jimmy Bowery (Eye Hate God) on drums, and Pat Bruders (Crowbar), the newest addition to the line-up, on bass, will kick off a string of tour dates on release day, beginning in Fort Worth, TX, and ending October 2 in Charlotte, NC.

Self-produced and recorded at Nodfertu’s Lair, located at Anselmo’s New Orleans home, 'Down IV Part I – The Purple EP' is undeniably the product of the iconic collective that is DOWN, whose members origins span from Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod. Staggering riffs, thunderous drums, and Anselmo's inimitable delivery crush and captivate over the course of the collection's six songs. It's dark. It's dangerous. It's decisive. It's DOWN at their best.

"I do believe that we have delivered a record that will be accepted and hopefully enjoyed by the DOWN horde—if you will,” says Anselmo. “If you're looking for a DOWN record, it's very pure and real."

Lyrically, the EP goes beyond just personal experiences, and explores themes that include the faith of mankind, the imperfection of mankind and cultural belief systems.

"DOWN gives me the platform to be poetic and paint imagery with lyrics,” says Anselmo. “That's the approach I took. They complement the music and create an ominous feeling. Ultimately, when people consume the words, it's always their interpretation that matters. I could be image-conscious though when I wrote. It's not so gut level or street. The darker shit is some of my favorite."

With an album sales history totaling over 725,000, these New Orleans natives are no strangers to success. Their legendary 1995 debut 'Nola' is certified platinum, while 'Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow' [2002] and 'Down III: Over The Under' [2007] remain fan and critical successes. Count on The Purple EP to garner similar achievements!

EP 1 Track Listing:

    Levitation
    Witchtripper
    Open Coffins
    The Curse Is A Lie
    This Work Is Timeless
    Misfortune Teller

TOOL: NEW Album Progress!

Late last year, a rumor surfaced regarding the recording of the bands fifth studio album, which will be the follow up to '10,000 Days' (2006). But nothing has happened yet!

During a recent interview with the "Children Of Saturn" radio show (The Pulse Of Radio), Danny Carey (TOOL drummer) offered a brief update on what is to be the band's fifth studio album. Carey explained, "The TOOL thing is happening. Me, Adam [Jones, guitar] and Justin [Chancellor, bass] are banging away. Trying to get enough [material] to get Maynard [James Keenan, vocals] in there, but there is no wine before it's time."

Keenan, who has been busy with side projects A PERFECT CIRCLE and PUSCIFER — not to mention his vineyards — explained in an interview last year how TOOL's writing process worked, saying, "They write forever and then we go in and knock it out. We're writing. We're writing vocals, but nothing's solid."

At press time, TOOL has not begun any recording for the project, which will follow up 2006's '10,000 Days'.

Tool's Discography:

- Undertow (1993)
- Ænima (1996)
- Lateralus (2001)
- 10,000 Days (2006)

When Can Fans Expect A NEW METALLICA Album?

During an Outside Lands festival media call, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich said that they're looking to get into the studio in September to work on their NEW album! But the big question is: how close are METALLICA fans from listening to some NEW material?

"I wouldn't use the word 'close.' I mean, obviously, in the context of, say, the age of planet Earth, we're pretty close. But in the context of, say, other things, there may be one or two football seasons, or one or two baseball seasons, or one or two hockey seasons… We've gotta do this movie, and we're gonna get back to writing when we've done this movie. I would say late '13 or early '14. It's difficult to imagine… I think even late '13 may be a bit optimistic. I would say hopefully we can realistically get a record out probably about a year and half from now, so maybe early '14."

When asked about how far along is the band with the writing of the NEW album, James Hetfield said: "I only have 846 riffs. In iTunes, you can see how many things you've got. And that does not include the soundchecks, the stuff we goof around with here. You plug in an amp. Suddenly it makes you feel good — you come up with a riff. 'Dude, did you get that?' You can't get away from being recorded here."

In a historical twist of events, METALLICA will be performing eight concerts in Mexico City! Heavy Metal's biggest band, will be performing at the Sports Palace in Mexico City on July 28 & 30 and August 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, & 9. Additionally, the band will be unveiling their NEW stage: a 140x50-foot stage that features colossal components and striking visual elements spanning Metallica's 30-year career.

Then they will be performing a hometown show in San Francisco, California as part of the Outside Lands festival at the Golden Gate Park!

Gene Hoglan Will Be Touring With TESTAMENT Following The DETHKLOK/LAMB OF GOD Tour Cancellation!

Yesterday (July 26), TESTAMENT announced that they had recruited drummer Mark Hernandez (FORBIDDEN, HEATHEN, DEFIANCE, VIO-LENCE) for their upcoming two-week European tour, which kicks off on July 31 at the Total Metal Festival in Toritto, Italy.

Well, if there is one good thing about the DETHKLOK/LAMB OF GOD tour cancellation (More about this story HERE!) is that drummer Gene Hoglan (Gene Hoglan (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEATH, DETHKLOK, FEAR FACTORY)) WILL be joining TESTAMENT on the European run (starts next week).

In a series of tweets, TESTAMENT guitarist Alex Skolnick explained, "As some of you know, there's been a sub-drummer lined up for this tour, Mark Hernandez (ex-FORBIDDEN), subbing for Gene Hoglan, who was booked.

"So we find out Gene is available now (due to last-minute LAMB OF GOD/DETHKLOK tour cancellation). Calls were made and it's worked out: Gene is coming [out with us].

"Mark Hernandez took it very well; [he was a] total pro! Agreed it's best to have Gene if he's now available. But [the other] guys [in TESTAMENT] didn't tell me!!

"So I show up [to rehearsal] and they tell me [Mark] doesn't know and ask me to break the news to him. I take him outside and tell him. He acts devastated! Eric [Peterson, guitar] films it from afar. I told him please not to take it hard, it's just like being an understudy on Broadway! He tells me he's crushed, he's been working so hard, etc. And then, I said a line that everyone's now quoting and probably will for years. That's when they all came out and everyone started laughing.

"The quote of the year... Here's what I said, while looking this dude straight in the eye: 'It sucks to be the understudy.'"

A complete list of tour dates can be seen below.

In anticipation of the release of TESTAMENT's NEW album 'The Dark Roots Of Earth' (out today in Europe, Tuesday in North America), Skolnick has been busy spreading the word about the bands 10th studio album. We recently had the chance to chat with him at the "meet and greet" that was hosted in New York City. Here is what went down!

"The quote of the year... Here's what I said, while looking this dude straight in the eye: 'It sucks to be the understudy.'"

This just in, TESTAMENT have recruited drummer Mark Hernandez (FORBIDDEN, HEATHEN, DEFIANCE, VIO-LENCE) for their upcoming two-week European tour, which kicks off on July 31 at the Total Metal Festival in Toritto, Italy. Hernandez is filling in for the bands current drummer Gene Hoglan (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEATH, DETHKLOK, FEAR FACTORY), who is unable to make this run due to scheduling conflicts.

TESTAMENT's 'The Dark Roots of Earth', was produced, mixed and mastered once again by the world renowned Andy Sneap (ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE, ACCEPT, EXODUS). Special bonus tracks were recorded, mixed  and mastered by Juan Urteaga (CATTLE DECAPITATION, HEATHEN, VILE, SADUS) at his Trident Studios. The highly anticipated follow up to their 2008 release 'The Formation of Damnation' will be released tomorrow July 27, 2012 (Europe) and July 31, 2012 (North America) via Nuclear Blast Records.

In anticipation of the release of TESTAMENT's NEW album 'The Dark Roots Of Earth', Skolnick has been busy spreading the word about the bands 10th studio album. We recently had the chance to chat with him at the "meet and greet" that was hosted in New York City. Here is what went down!

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE's Jesse Leach Talks About TRESPASS AMERICA, The Band's Upcoming Album & Much More!

Currently, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE are on the road as part of the Trespass America Festival tour. The event is headlined by FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH with support from TRIVIUM, EMMURE, GOD FORBID and other bands. This past Friday night, July 20, they performed a NEW song, "No End in Sight". The great folks from Roadrunner Records got frontman Jesse Leach on the phone from Lubbock, Texas to talk about the tour, writing lyrics for the band's upcoming album, and more! A few excerpts of the interview follow:

You premiered a new song Friday night – are you playing it every night now?

It depends. We’re just trying to switch it up a little bit. We want to add a little bit of excitement to the shows, get a little bit of buzz going so more people come out, just having fun with it, you know?

What’s your favorite song to sing on this tour?

Probably “This is Absolution,” now, just because it’s so thrashy in the beginning, it reminds me of Carcass. It’s a really energetic song, just gets the crowd going.

Do you ever find yourself mentally measuring the crowd response to 'Alive Or Just Breathing' songs versus Howard Jones-era songs?

I don’t think consciously I do that, no, I’m just overall trying to have the crowd enjoy themselves, regardless of what style or what era of Killswitch it is. Admittedly, the Howard-era stuff, those choruses are so big, they’re so easy to sing along to, so that’s usually what gets the crowd going for sure.

How long are you playing?

45 minutes. About nine songs, give or take, depending what songs we’re doing.

Do you wish the set was longer, or is this a good way for you to get back on the horse, so to speak?

I can go either way. I can play longer or shorter. I find that 45 minutes is a sweet spot, though, because your energy level stays pretty high. Past that, when you’re running around the stage like a maniac, you tend to get more tired. But I’m good for about 45 minutes to an hour. That’s usually a really nice time for me, to keep my energy high.

For me, 45 minutes is about right as a spectator, too.

[laughs] Yeah, exactly. And then after a while, you’re like, “Yeah, all right…” You’ve gotta really love a band to stay there and watch it. I totally agree with you.

So what can you say about the next record at this point?

I’ve got a couple of songs done, I’ve got a bunch to go, but I’ve got a lot of ideas. I listen to it every once in a while out here just to keep me familiar with it, so when I get home and attempt to finish the record, it’s still fairly fresh in my mind. Sonically, this is definitely – it’s got a more urgent feeling to it. It’s a lot faster, there’s definitely huge melody going on, but the songs are a lot shorter. Not one song really goes over the three and a half, four minute mark. I just anticipate lyrically and vocally it to be a very urgent record. We’re at a state in this world right now where someone needs to talk about what’s going on. There’s a lot of apathy in this world, there’s a lot of really screwed-up stuff in our government and the world’s governments, and the whole class vs. class thing, the protests that happened all around the United States – there’s a lot of unrest, and I think it kinda needs to be touched upon. And it’s up to the metal community to have a voice, and that’s what I’m aiming to do with this next record – make it very important. Make it matter.

Are you writing all the lyrics for the new album yourself?

Yes.

Given that you’ve been out of the band for 10 years – obviously they’ve welcomed you back, but is everybody on the same page regarding what the songs will be about? Are you running the lyrics past them as you go?

Oh, yeah, this band is a total democracy, which is great. Coming back into it, the guys basically said, “Do what you wanna do – we trust you,” but I like to show them my progress, so I send them demos, I’ll show them my lyrics and concepts for the songs. And so far, every single person’s been really excited about my ideas, and probably just the energy that I’m bringing to the project.

Do you write much on the road, or do you need down time?

Yeah, you kinda need down time. It’s tough out here. Being a creative person on tour’s tough, because you’re so used to a schedule, and it sounds funny, people who don’t do it wouldn’t really know, but it’s tiring. You don’t really have a lot of creative time when you’re out here. You’re trying to socialize with the other bands, doing your show, and to be creative you’ve gotta hide somewhere and get privacy, and that’s rare on tour. So I’ll go for long walks by myself outside of the show grounds and attempt to write, but it’s really tough out here. I’ve had a few days the past two weeks where I’ve had a little bit of creativity, but outside of that, the road isn’t really conducive to creative thought, for me.

BLOOD FOR BLOOD Fire singer following alleged Rape scandal; Band might have to call it a day!

This past June, Boston's BLOOD FOR BLOOD was forced to cancel a couple of shows that were scheduled to take place in their hometown and in New York City due to a situation involving [vocalist] 'Buddha' (Erick Medina). But why were the "Wasted Nights" shows cancelled?

According to a source close to the band, an "accusation of rape was made against 'Buddha' about a month ago, but at this time I have no details regarding this except for he was arrested and booked for rape. I tried texting him on Monday but haven't heard back from him."

Allegedly, the incident happened at a BBQ during Memorial Day weekend where 'Buddha" got drunk (which he is famous for) and jokingly pinned a 13 year old girl against a wall and then forcefully kissing her as she struggled. This incident is being investigated by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Family.

Today, the band has announced that 'Buddha' is no longer in the band and that their future (including the completion of their seventh album, the band's first since 2004's 'Serenity') is very uncertain:

"Make no mistake, the nature of the alleged activity, true or false, is an affront to EVERYTHING this band is about. Some of the members of this band have been mistreated and abused as a children, personally. We would never, COULD never ignore, condone, or even associate with such behavior. At this time we are too emotionally drained to make plans for the band's future, but due to the nature of these allegations, we feel it is impossible to continue with anyone linked to such allegations, thus, whatever the future holds for Blood For Blood, it will not include Erick. Lastly, We are unable to make concrete plans for the band's future."

Surveillance video of Irving Plaza thief; help catch him before he strikes again!

As previously reported, this past Saturday our good friends from Wendigo Productions LLC celebrated the 50th birthday of their founder Wendy at Irving Plaza in New York City. The event featured live performances from KILLCODE, STIGMA, SEX SLAVES, BETA PLUS EMBRYO, and many more.

Towards the end of the night while the SEX SLAVES were closing the show, the individual pictured above stole a bunch of camera gear and other valuable items. Here is a statement from the Wendigo team:

"He hung out all night in the VIP dressing room, making small talk with various people. He was casing. At some point during Reformed Whores/Sex Slaves set, he nabbed 2 purses (including cell phones, etc.) and $1000 video camera and various other items.

"He also used credit cards belonging to the Reformed Whores at the nearby CVS, Walgreens and McDonalds. We are waiting to hopefully get that cam footage too."

If you know who this scumbag is, call the NYPD's 13th Precinct (212) 477-7444 (Detective Rodriguez) or Wendigo (212) 300-4418 with tips and info!

Here is surveillance video of the thief running down the stairs and leaving the venue!
