Heavy Music history was written on Thursday, May 2 at Club Nokia in downtown Los Angeles, CA. Not only did the Revolver Golden Gods Awards welcome the elite of the music we all love, but the energy inside the sold out venue was incomparable. Here is a scoop of who won what, and who performed with whom.
Prior to the event we took over the Black Carpet and chatted with THAT METAL SHOW's Eddie Trunk and Don Jamieson! During the interview they revealed some kickass details about season 12 of TMS. They also discussed the legacy of Jeff Hanneman and the importance of an event like the Revolver Golden Gods Awards!
The entire event was dedicated to SLAYER's Jeff Hanneman, who passed away recently from liver failure. Details HERE!
During a recent entry of Robb Flynn's "THE GENERAL JOURNALS: DIARY OF A FRONTMAN... AND OTHER RAMBLINGS", Flynn wrote in detail about the legacy of Jeff Hanneman and shared a bunch of stories that he shared with the legendary guitarist who passed away recently from liver failure. Here is what Flynn wrote: "Still can't believe the Jeff Hanneman from Slayer is dead, things like that just don't happen. Thrashers don't die??!! WTF!!??
I'm not going to sit here and say how him and I were best buds or something, we definitely weren't, I'd barely call us acquaintances, I did 8 tours and over 120 shows with the dude and honestly, I never really got to "know him". I was always closer with Kerry. Jeff was super quiet, really kept to himself, would get rowdy when he was drunk, but was a bit aloof, and seemed annoyed at the people partying around him despite the fact that he himself would be getting hammered.
I can remember some good hangs with him though. The first was in Basel, Switzerland back in November, 1994 when Machine Head was main support to Slayer on the Divine Intervention tour. It was one of those shows were something so random happens it just never leaves you, in this case, the show was sponsored by Chesterfield cigarettes and every kid entering the show got 2 free packs of smokes. I've never seen so much smoke in a venue in my life. I remember walking onstage and yelling at our roadie / everything-guy Mike Scum, "DUDE, turn off the fuckin' smoke machine", he said "YOOOOO, it's not the smoke machine bro, it's the cigarettes!" It was damn near impossible to breath onstage. After the show we were hanging backstage and Jeff walked back, we started bitching about the crazy cigarette show, and he invited me back to the dressing room to grab a beer, we sat down and chatted for a while, and then I went all Slayer-nerd on him and started grilling him on what songs he wrote.
Me: "Who wrote Angel Of Death?"
Jeff: "I did"
Me: "Lyrics too?"
Jeff: "Yep"
Me: "Reign In Blood?"
Jeff: "Me"
Me: "Dead Skin Mask?"
Jeff: "Yep"
Me: "South Of Heaven?"
Jeff: "Me"
Me: "Black Magic?"
Jeff: "You know it"
Me: "Hell Awaits?"
Jeff: "Yep"
On and on it went, that man wrote both the music and lyrics to a large goddamn portion of my favorite Slayer songs. He was a huge influence on my songwriting growing up in particular with arrangements and the bold use of key changes. The one thing Slayer band always had over so many other bands is they were all over the guitar neck when it came to key changes. Leads would be in some of the most random keys ever, but somehow it made it all that much more frantic, and when the chorus kicked back in, BOOM! CRUSHING! Set up perfectly. He was one of the few metal heads I met who never really got into Pantera, he told me he "liked some stuff", but thought they we're "too bluesy at times", and that he "liked more evil notes or sad riffs"
Another good memory was sharing a tour bus on the August 2001 Korean / Japan / Australia tour, it was all fly-dates and hotels, we were sharing crew, tour manager and manager, so we all rode on the bus together to and from the airport to the hotel every day. Sometimes the rides were an hour or two, so you'd just all BS and hang. One time a kid in Australia bum-rushed the bus while we were all sitting in it, hammered after partying one night. He was desperate for autographs and came on the bus screaming (what else?) "SLAAAAAAAAAYYYYYEEEEERRRR!!!" He then saw me and went all, "Oh shit, Robb Flynn, mate I fuckin' LOVE Machine Head, but it's fuckin' SLAAAAAAAYYYYYYYEEEERRRRR" I looked the fucker right in the eye and slurred, "Oh just FUCK RIGHT OFF!!" Hannamen fell out dying, he laughed for 10 minutes straight, cracked him up, that slightly feminine high pitched giggle that he always did.
Dude backed me when Kerry King and I were beefin all that time long ago, he would come up to me at festivals and would talk, just be normal. He even backed me in Decibel magazine when they asked him about the beef, saying "Robb is a good dude", and that "Kerry was like the girlfriend of the band, always beefin' with someone". I got a good laugh outta that.
The last memory I'll share is from the American leg of the Divine Intervention tour in March 1995. It was Slayer band, Biohazard supporting, and Machine Head opening. We were playing the International Ballroom in Atlanta Georgia. He had been sitting out some of the new songs from "Divine", which was odd to me. We were hanging out in their dressing room before the show, just him and I, and I mustered up the nerve to ask him what the deal with it was. At first he joked that he just "didn't feel like learning them, didn't like 'em, Kerry wrote them", he was chuckling, and then he stopped. He looked down and got serious. He said he'd been having a lot of pain in his wrists, his hands and wrists were going numb all the time, and would go numb during those songs because they were really fast, then he started to cry. It was a startling confession. I offered some awkward feel-good comment, but he just continued to cry, and I decided to sit there in the silence with him for a minute. He gave me a hug, and said "Whoa!", and laughed walked out toward the stage, turned back and said "thanks dude".
It was an intense moment, one of those rare, intense moments you have with someone, let alone with someone from another band.
It made me really respect the dude.
That's the Jeff I'm gonna remember.
To Kerry, Tom, Dave, Paul, Rick Sales Mgmt and Jeff's family, my sincere condolences.
R.I.P brother."
As previously reported, MACHINE HEAD has begun jamming some NEW music, and the recording sessions are going very smoothly according to Robb Flynn. Here is what he recently posted on The General Journals (sign up HERE): "We've been really productive writing-wise. As of last night we have 4 songs pretty much done musically, another 5 jams / half songs. The song we finished last night felt like it could be something really special. Phil has been on a riff roll, bringing some really unique sounding riffage and Dave McClain (our secret weapon) has brought some damn cool riffs to the table as well." In what is easily one of the most shocking stories to surface since the inception of Horns Up Rocks in 2010, Tim Lambesis from AS I LAY DYING remains incarcerated after an undercover Police officer discovered that Lambesis wanted his wife assassinated. Allegedly, Lambesis's wife Meggan was making his life impossible through their undergoing divorce and would even prevent him from seeing his kids.
On Thursday afternoon, at a court arraignment attended by his friends and fans, AS I LAY DYING singer Tim Lambesis pleaded not guilty to a charge of soliciting the murder of his estranged wife. San Diego County Superior Court Judge Martin Staven set bail at $3 million. Once he is released from jail, Lambesis must wear a GPS monitor and stay away from his wife and their three children.
At the arraignment in Superior Court in Vista, a readiness hearing was set for June 10 and preliminary hearing for July 10. Lambesis was represented by defense attorney Anthony Salerno of Los Angeles. Salerno told reporters that Lambesis did not intend to harm anybody and was apparently set up by the man at the gym.
"Law enforcement was being fed something by someone that I strongly believe was a snitch, was out to save his own skin and was trumping things up, exaggerating things," Salerno said. The lawyer declined to address specific allegations.
"He was arrested for conspiracy to commit murder, which carries a life
sentence, as well as being booked for soliciting murder," Salerno
said. "I won't necessarily get too deep [in the details of] the law
surrounding conspiracy, but I came to believe very strongly that there
is absolutely no way that he could be even charged with conspiracy, much
less convicted of it. [So] one of the first things I did was to reach
out directly to the [district attorney] that was assigned to the case
and had some conversations with her. And she, in fact, did decide for Tim
not to be charged with conspiracy, which was a big victory, 'cause that
took a potential life sentence off the table before he was even
charged. That's something that jumped out at me right away — that I
needed to do that early intervention — so we did that."
Salerno also said that Lambesis was originally being held without bail before the attorney was able to intervene.
"At the point Tim
was first arrested, the Sheriff's Department asked for and received
permission to hold him with no bail," he said. "They got that permission
from a judge and I knew that that was well in excess of what the bail
schedule in San Diego County calls for. So my next order of business was
to try to see what we could do to get that bail… well, first of all, to
get a bail, and then to get it set as low as possible. That, of course,
was what the bail hearing was about [on Thursday]. I was a little bit
disappointed; I thought the bail should have been much lower. The
scheduled amount for the charge that he ultimately has now is just
$250,000. And, in fact, the scheduled amount for even solicitation to
commit murder is a million [dollars]; and the judge set it at three
million. So I was a little disappointed that it was that high. On the
other hand, the D.A. was asking that the bail continued to be set at no
bail whatsoever, and then she said — [which] I thought [was] kind of
over the top — that as a backup, it ought to be set at $20 million. I
think the fact that an earlier judge had said 'no bail' kind of must
have influenced our judge, and that's [why] he set the three million. So
right now the gameplan is to try to work on getting Tim out at that three million or possibly to have it lowered."
The lawyer added that someone may have given false information about Lambesis to authorities in order to "save his own skin."
"I
would anticipate myself asking for quite a bit of additional discovery,
particularly on this person I strongly suspect is a snitch and is an
informant for the police and was really creating this whole scenario and
sort of setting Tim up," he said. "I believe there's a good
probability he may be a police informant. And that information is only
available internally with the police department, or in this case the San Diego Sheriff's Department, and through the D.A.'s office, and that's something I'm gonna have to explore as well."
He
added: "There's one other element to this, too, which is… I don't want
to start to make accusations on this one unless I have some more
information, but I will point out that Tim's wife's brother, I
understand, is a San Diego Sheriff's deputy, and I think I would be
remiss if I didn't fully explore that, 'cause that is a litte bit… it's
at the bare minimum very coincidental, and it may be more than that."
“Deputy District Attorney Claudia Grasso said that Lambesis originally approached someone in a gym and asked if he knew anyone who would kill his wife. Later Lambesis met with the undercover agent posing as a hit man — code name “Red” — according to Grasso. “Red” asked Lambesis if he wanted his wife of eight years gone, and the defendant replied, “Yes, that’s what I want,” the prosecutor said.
Grasso said Lambesis gave the undercover agent an envelope containing $1,000, pictures of his wife, her address and the code to get through a gate. Lambesis also gave the agent dates when the “hit” could take place — days when he had his children, saying that would be his alibi, according to the prosecutor.”
If found guilty, Tim could face up to 9 years in prison.

Jonah, the kid playing the drums below, is an 8 year old self-taught drummer. He's never had a lesson, and plays songs as he hears them, and how he thinks they should sound. He doesn't "play it like the record", he plays his way. He doesn't have to learn how to play a song; he just has to hear it. Jonah spends between 1 - 2 hours per week playing drums.
Jonah recently recorded a cover of Mötley Crüe's "Looks That Kill" and he killed it! Tommy Lee: eat your heart out, this kid might replace you soon. Hahahaha!
NOTE: Only Drums you hear are Jonah's not his buddy Tommy's. Jonah uses http://jammit.com/ for this song.

Yesterday, Thursday, May 9, IRON MAIDEN launched the "Trooper Beer", the beer was developedby Bruce Dickinson who is a real ale enthusiast andas a result developed a beer which has true depth of character. Malt flavors
and citric notes from a unique blend of Bobec, Goldings and Cascade
hops dominate this deep golden ale with a subtle hint of lemon. Here is the official press release regarding the launch of the "Trooper Beer":
"Trooper beer was officially launched yesterday at Robinsons
Brewery in Cheshire, with a reception attended by brewing trade
representatives from both the UK and Internationally. As fans may have
read recently, the unprecedented upfront demand for the beer meant
Robinsons had to brew three times a day, six days a week for the first
time ever in the Brewery’s 175 year history to cope with pre-orders in
excess of 300,000 pints.. Robinsons were overwhelmed by the number of
enquiries they’d had from all over the world and sent us a comprehensive
listing of whereabouts the interest had been – from a staggering 184
countries! So, a big thanks to all our fans and it’s great to know the
Maiden family extends into so many places where the band have never even
had a chance to play before! Robinsons Managing Director Oliver
Robinson then gave a short speech about how the Iron Maiden/Robinsons
collaboration came about and he presented Bruce with a specially
engraved Brewery hand pump, in recognition of Trooper being the Fastest
Ever Selling New Robinsons Beer. Bruce then pulled the first-ever pint
of Trooper from the cask in the Brewery bar amid loud applause from the
assembled crowd!"
"Trooper is now available to order online throughout most of the
EU, and Robinsons are working flat-out to ensure it will be available to
the rest of the world as soon as possible. For updates on when Trooper

Today, Friday, May 10th, TOOL's legendary drummer Danny Carey is celebrating his 52nd birthday! Danny was bornin Lawrence, Kansas. His first encounter with the drums began at the age of ten by joining the school band and taking private lessons on the snare drum. Two years later, Carey began to practice on a drum set.
In his senior year of high school in Paola, Kansas, Carey joined the high school jazz band and began to study under drumming great Ben Kelso specifically for jazz drumming training. Jazz would later play a huge role in his signature approach to the drum set in a Rock setting. As Carey progressed through high school and later college at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, he began expanding his studies in percussion with theory into the principles of geometry, science, and metaphysics as well as delving into Sacred Geometry and certain hidden aspects of life and the occult. Carey also played jazz while attending college and got to experience the jazz scene in Kansas City.
After college, a friend and bandmate convinced Carey to leave Kansas for Portland, Oregon, where he played briefly in various bands before moving to Los Angeles, California, where he was able to perform as a studio drummer with Carole King and perform live sets with Pigmy Love Circus. He also played in Green Jellÿ as Danny Longlegs and recorded the album Cereal Killer. He would later find his way to TOOL after coming to know singer Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Adam Jones and practicing with them in place of drummers the two had requested but had never shown up. Besides TOOL, Carey also finds time for other projects new and old such as Pigmy Love Circus, VOLTO!, and ZAUM. As previously announced, TOOL are working on some NEW music. Up until know, in typical TOOL fashion the band have been very mysterious about the status of their fifth studio album and have only been communicating with the outside world via their webmaster.
The Rock FM (New Zealand radio station), recently conducted an interview with TOOL's drummer Danny Carey. During the interview Carey discussed the progress of the NEW TOOL album, the effect that their music has on millions of people worldwide and his involvement with Jason Bonham (son of John Bonham from LED ZEPELLIN) on the NEW Superman soundtrack. Listen to the interview at this link: http://www.therock.net.nz/Tools-Danny-Carey-talks-to-Tracey/tabid/381/articleID/23856/Default.aspx When asked by Chilean radio station Futuro about the album arriving in the near future, Maynard James Keenan directly replied: “No NEW disc, not this year.” When pressed further replied: “I have not written any songs. So no, there is nothing.” Related links: Tool's Official Site
As previously reported, ADLER, the band featuring former GUNS N' ROSES drummer Steven Adler, have been forced to postpone their previously announced "Back From The Dead" summer tour due to Steven checking into rehab in order to continue working on his sobriety. Here is what Steven had to say about relapsing and returning to rehab:
"I picked up a bottle and drank. This occurred a few times and that is a few times too many. I knew that this had to permanently stop. That is the moment I picked up the phone, before it got out of hand, to get help.
"I had kicked hard drugs several years ago and now it is time to get rid of the urges of drinking alcohol.
"I am at a great facility and will stay here until I am comfortable to be home to work the program on my own.
"I love you all for understanding, being patient and supporting my decision.
"Like my peers, I will beat this too, so I can return to music and beat my drums!"
The band issued a statement saying: "We are truly sorry to all of the fans and promoters who were looking forward to seeing us on the road, but right now Steven's health is the most important thing. We hope to make it up to everyone when Steven recovers." The dates are being rescheduled to the fall.
Here is the list of affected tour dates:

According to the LA Times, earlier today at a court arraignment attended by his friends and fans, AS I LAY DYING singer Tim Lambesis pleaded not guilty to a charge of soliciting the murder of his estranged wife.
As previously reported, Lambesis’ estranged wife, Meggan Lambesis, said in the court papers obtained by The Associated Press that her husband had fallen asleep while caring for the couple’s three children near a pool and had begun spending endless hours at a gym. He had also begun to spend thousands of dollars on tattoos, she said in the papers filed last fall.
Meggan didn’t express any concern in the documents for her own safety, however. Police say her husband tried to hire a hitman to kill her, but the person he approached was actually an undercover detective taking part in a sting operation set up following a tip to law enforcement last week.
The musician’s wife also said in court papers that Lambesis toured six months a year and had taken two last-minute trips in a month to see his then-girlfriend in Florida.
She said he owned two “high-end” Harley Davidson motorcycles, dined out for almost every meal and lived in a spacious suite at his parents’ $2 million home.
She asked the court to order an expert to examine their music-related businesses and other assets. She submitted a tax return showing the couple grossed $233,000 in 2010 but did not specify an amount she was seeking for spousal support.
The couple adopted the children — ages 4, 8 and 10 — from Ethiopia, and Tim Lambesis continued to see them for about 10 hours a week when he was not on tour, even though the couple was no longer living together, according to court documents.
As we all know, the bands latest record 'Awakened' was released last Fall via Metal Blade Records and is a much darker record then the band previous releases. The record was also released around the time in which Lambesis' wife filed for divorce. "On this record, I wasn’t purposefully trying to be negative, but I think sometimes we have to be honest with some of the darker and more difficult times of our lives to get back to that positivity", Lambesis is quoted as saying.
If found guilty, Tim could face up to 9 years in prison.
