Hixonfest 2010: RECAP

When The Hixon performed with Charred Walls of the Damned this past July at The Gramercy theater here in New York City, we discussed with the band the idea of having their annual Hixonfest take place in the big apple. At the time it was just an idea we had, but soon we started making all the arrangements necessary to make Hixonfest 2010 happen. Together with Jefferson Avenue Productions we delivered a true night of Heavy Metal, here is what went down.

It all started around 7 o'clock, on a perfect Friday night. As soon as the doors opened and Jo Schüftan (Horns Up Rocks founder) started blasting Pantera's "Domination" through the PA, the party was started! People started strolling into Ace of Clubs as Lies Beneath were getting ready to perform at Hixonfest 2010. Our host for the evening Richard Christy (Howard Stern Show and Charred Walls of the Damned), was sipping on cold beer and greeting all those who approached him. Around 8:30 Lies Beneath took over Ace of Clubs, and during the next half hour the crowd indulged their ears into some crushing Heavy Metal.

Around 9 o'clock, the event promoters Jo Schüftan (Horns Up Rocks) and Tim Strohsnitter (Jefferson Avenue Productions) welcomed everyone to Hixonfest 2010. Then they introduced Richard Christy who immediately made everyone laugh and pointed out how awesome it was to host an event celebrating The Hixon and all things Metal. After his comedy act and some more music was blasted through the PA, Richard introduced the band Canons from Long Island. The band played a good half hour of uncompromised music, which lead into Frankie Scorpions' "Crown Ink Divas" model search. During that time she presented the crowd with a handful of tattooed sexy girls, and she even introduced model and actress Danielle Darkko to the crowd. She then welcomed CEO of Wyld Chyld Tattoo Billy Deluso on stage, and the crowd picked the "Crown Ink Diva" of the night.

Then Richard Christy returned to the stage and Frankie mentioned how sexy his Metal voice is. He then proceeded to introduce the headliners of the night, The mighty Hixon from South Jersey. The band took center stage and for the next hour, Ace of Clubs was a headbangers heaven, and a parents nightmare. We were very stoked to see the crowds response, and it made us very proud to prove that Heavy Metal in New York City is very much alive. It was also very Metal to see sexy girls dancing on the strip pole, while The Hixon crushed Ace of Clubs. After a short ear break for the attendees, the all female Judas Priest tribute band Judas Priestess, were ready to keep the party rolling.

Judas Priestess came to Ace of Clubs with an ass kicking mentality! This phenomenal band always makes the guys head-bang their heads off their bodies, and the girls shake their booties out of control (specially if there is a strip pole involved). They had every single Judas Priest song perfectly crafted, and proved why Rob Halford gave them his seal of approval. As music promoter and music expert Tim Martinez (A.K.A. DJ Tim No 37) mentioned to us: "Judas Priestess is the best tribute band I have ever seen."

Right before the last band of the night known as Sealed With a Kiss took center stage, Tim from Jefferson Avenue Productions raffled 2 Slayer tickets for American Carnage (featuring Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax), a poster signed by Howard Stern and his Sirius XM crew, a box of music courtesy of Tones of Death, and a magazine package courtesy of Revolver Magazine and Royal Flush Magazine. Then Sealed With a Kiss finished the night on a very high note.

We want to thank all the kick ass bands that performed (The Hixon, Judas Priestess, Lies Beneath, Canons & S.W.A.K.), all of you who attended, our host Richard Christy for being such an awesome guy, Frankie Scorpion and the Crown Ink Divas, Wyld Chyld Tattoo, Jose Mangin and everyone at Sirius XM, Josh Bernstein from Revolver Magazine and Royal Flush Magazine, Liz Snair from Tones of Death, Ace of Clubs, our videographer Justin Hawkins, our photographers Steve Ventura and Tracy Alison, and of course our partners in musical crime: Jefferson Avenue Productions. See you next year for Hixonfest 2011.

Here are some quotes that summarize Hixonfest 2010:

"Thank you so much for everything last night! I have a pretty brutal hangover today, but it was well worth it!" - Richard Christy (Howard Stern Show & Charred Walls of the Damned)

SIRIUS XM LIQUID METAL HIXONFEST 2010 PROMO!!!

Horns Up Rocks and Jefferson Avenue Productions = partners in musical crime! On Friday August 27th, you have a metallic appointment with us at Ace of Clubs here in New York City. We are stoked to present the 2010 Hixonfest! Hosted by Richard Christy and featuring live performances by:

The Hixon: The Hixon are proof that if you persevere as a band, and never compromise your musical ideals, you can rise up to the occasion and make some ears bleed! This is why they recently opened for Charred Walls of the Damned in New York City and Philadelphia.

Judas Priestess: Judas Priestess is an all girl Judas Priest tribute band from New York, formed in July 2009. Their particular Halford is MilitiA, who has performed as a lead singer with Dee Snider’s heavy metal orchestra Van Helsing’s Curse, and in other musicals as Sins of a Scarecrow or Jesus Christ Superstar.

Canons: The work ethic and attitude of this band is what Horns Up Rocks and Jefferson Avenue Productions stands for. A DIY band who's main goal is to play as many shows as possible and have a great fucking time doing it. New album recorded and getting ready for release, Canons will have you banging your head til your mother fucking neck breaks!

Lies Beneath: A five-piece metal band with influences ranging from thrash, to death-metal and hardcore. With classic dual-guitar attack, a crushing rhythm section, dynamic vocals and brooding soundscapes, this band creates an undeniable presence and demands captivation from any audience.

Sealed With a Kiss: Soooo, these three bags of douche named: Sydney Rifle, Drew Adler, and Steve Rascal all met at a brothel somewhere down in Brooklyn, now they play really good music. Their favorite things in the world are: 40's and cigarettes.

As we mentioned before, we have Richard Christy from the Howard Stern Show and Charred Walls of the Damned hosting the event for the 3rd year in a row! Additionally, Frankie Scorpion from the Gypsy Queens will be hosting the Crown Ink Divas model search. We will also have girls dancing on strip poles, plenty of drinks and we are raffling 2 tickets for the Slayer take over on October 8th at Nassau Coliseum. Do you really need any more reasons to come to Ace of Clubs on Friday August 27th?

SXM Liquid Metal HIXONFEST Promo!

Yesterday we made history! When we started Horns Up Rocks one of our goals was to help promote the Heavy Music scene wholeheartedly. In order to do this, we have been building rock solid relations with bands, fans and the media. We believe that the only way to reinvent the scene and relay the bricks made of steel, is by standing strong together as one.

Some may say we cover some bands that nobody knows about, but we know what our role is and we will never back-out from our mission. When we heard the Sirius XM Liquid Metal crew plug the upcoming Hixonfest on satellite radio yesterday, we felt the impact of what we have accomplished thus far. Rest assure that we are keeping the underground strong for years to come! As Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint Ritual & Arson Anthem) says: "The pulse of Heavy Metal lives in the underground scene!"'

This is why we are presenting to you! HIXONFEST 2010! HERE IS THE SIRIUS XM LIQUID METAL HIXONFEST PROMO! Voiced by Kara Pain for the "Metal News Blitz" segment! Tune in daily to LIQUID METAL!

The Hixon: Rising Up

Last December we headed to the "Man Cave Fiesta", hosted by Jose Mangin from Sirius XM Liquid Metal. After a tedious bus ride in the snow, we finally arrived at the Mangin hood. As we are looking for the address, we run into a big dude with a bottle of Don Julio on his hand. We look at each other and smiled as in saying "this is going to be a good night". This big dude was none other then Eduardo Barragan. Eduardo is the guitarist of The Hixon, a crushing Thrash Metal band from New Jersey!

The party started and I ran into the rest of The Hixon boys, which include Marc Hixon (Vocals), Stephen Wells (Drums) and Flip Martorano (Bass). Marc who has a striking resemblance to Chuck Billy from Testament, was sipping on Jim Beam and we immediately started cracking jokes. Next thing you know we are all talking Metal, drinking hard drinks and being obnoxious Metal heads.

Then Jose asks them to play a few songs at his jam room. They look at each other and in unison they say: "Lets do this!" We had never heard this band before, and were completely stoked to see how tight they were. Their music was well received by everyone who attended the party.

Fast Forward 6 months and we find out that they are opening for Charred Walls of The Damned at the Gramercy Theater in New York City. We arrived at the venue minutes before they played the biggest shows of their lives. It was surprising to see how calm they were. It was great to see them get on stage with so much confidence and to see them play such a killer set. We were lucky to have captured some of their performance on video and we think you should definitely check it out. The Hixon are proof that if you persevere as a band, and never compromise your musical ideals, you can rise up to the occasion and make some ears bleed!

Here is The Hixon with their song "Turn Up the Hate":
