Gil Sharone: STOLEN BABIES, Chi Cheng from DEFTONES, TDEP, PUSCIFER, Music Career & Technique!

Gil Sharone from the STOLEN BABIES is one of the top drummer in Heavy Music today. If you have had the chance to see him perform with his band STOLEN BABIES or with THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, or with PUSCIFER, or even with SUM 44, you know that Gil plays with a lot of heart. His precise technique is widely known and through the clinics that he oftens organizes, he has been able to pass the torch to young upcoming drummers.

STOLEN BABIES are currently on tour with SEVENDUST, COAL CHAMBER and LACUNA COIL, in what is by far one of the best tour packages of 2013.

Prior to his bands performance at the Best Buy Theater in New York City on April 17, Gil sat down with us to talk about this great tour and how STOLEN BABIES are catching a break following their hiatus. We also chatted with him about his musical career, jamming with his brother Rani, and about the recent passing of Chi Cheng from the DEFTONES (RIP). Without further due, here is our interview with Gil Sharone!

STOLEN BABIES with COAL CHAMBER, Sevendust and Lacuna Coil (remaining tour dates):

4/26 – Houston, TX @ Warehouse Live Ballroom**
4/27 – Corpus Christi, TX @ Concrete Street Amphitheater**
4/28 – Dallas, TX @ The Palladium Ballroom**

Puscifer, the Northern Arizona-based band helmed by Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle), are releasing an eight-song EP titled 'Donkey Punch The Night' today (February 19) via Puscifer Entertainment.

"While continuing our tradition of releasing a few NEW songs at a time," explained Keenan. "I also had an itch that needed scratching, and that itch was 'Balls To The Wall'. Which was followed by an even harder to reach itch known as 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. And scratch them we did." Here is the hilarious music video that the band filmed of their version of QUEEN's "Bohemian Rhapsody".

The collection features two NEW songs written by Keenan and Puscifer cohorts Mat Mitchell, Carina Round and Josh Eustis: "Breathe" and "Dear Brother" as well as two covers: Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Accept's "Balls To The Wall."  Donkey Punch The Night was recorded in Jerome, Ariz. in Keenan's Caduceus Cellars (www.caduceus.org) with the same roster from 2011's 'Conditions of My Parole' (Keenan, Mitchell, Round, Eustis, Matt McJunkins and  Jeff Friedl) and guests Zac Rae (piano), Juliette Commagere (vocals), Josh Morreau (bass) and Claire Acey (vocals).

Remixes of the four songs round-out the release with contributions from Los Angeles techno wizard Drumcell, Big Black Delta (aka Jonathan Bates, formerly of Mellowdrone and touring guitarist for M83), Sonoio (Italian multi-instrumentalist Alessandro Cortini of Modwheelmood and touring keyboard player for Muse and NIN) and Central American DJ, Silent Servant, who is well known for his mash-up of post-punk and techno.

TOOL: NEW Album Update From Maynard James Keenan!

As previously announced, TOOL are working on some NEW music. Up until know, in typical TOOL fashion the band have been very mysterious about the status of their fifth studio album and have only been communicating with the outside world via their webmaster. Well, this has finally changed. The bands leader Maynard James Keenan has released the following "update" regarding the bands next batch of music:

When asked by Chilean radio station Futuro about the album arriving in the near future, he directly replied: “No NEW disc, not this year.” When pressed further replied: “I have not written any songs. So no, there is nothing.”

As reported last week, the band had to postpone a few recording sessions after allegedly two members of the band were involved on some minor accidents. More info HERE!

TOOL: NEW Album Delayed Due To Injuries Within The Band!

As previously reported, TOOL are working on some NEW music. In typical TOOL fashion the band have been very mysterious about the status of their fifth studio album and have only been communicating with the outside world via their webmaster. Here is the latest update from the TOOL webmaster:

"The New Year started off on a bad note as far as writing and arranging sessions for Tool's next record. For the most part this was due to a 'minor' accident on a Vespa scooter (slick road conditions being the cause) by a certain band member that resulted in several broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. Because of the physical nature of the musical instrument involved, 9 DAYS of jamming were lost, although I'm happy to report that the person involved is recovering nicely, so much so, in fact, that writing sessions resumed last Monday (January 21), despite it being a holiday for many.

"Coincidentally, a few days prior to the mishap on the scooter, another person involved with Tool also wound up in the hospital after crashing his Vespa in Hollywood. Although he suffered a head injury (as well as multiple cuts and bruises to his body), I'm quite certain that if you were to order an "Entaphiosis" Hoddie, you would receive an "Entaphiosis" Hoodie."

We are glad to hear that the members of TOOL are OK!

During an interview with the "Children Of Saturn" radio show (The Pulse Of Radio), Danny Carey (TOOL drummer) offered a brief update on what is to be the band's fifth studio album. Carey explained, "The TOOL thing is happening. Me, Adam [Jones, guitar] and Justin [Chancellor, bass] are banging away. Trying to get enough [material] to get Maynard [James Keenan, vocals] in there, but there is no wine before it's time."

Keenan, who has been busy with side projects A PERFECT CIRCLE and PUSCIFER — not to mention his vineyards — explained in an interview last year how TOOL's writing process worked, saying, "They write forever and then we go in and knock it out. We're writing. We're writing vocals, but nothing's solid."

Tool's Discography:

Update On NEW TOOL Music!

Late last year, a rumor surfaced regarding the recording of TOOL's fifth studio album, which will be the follow up to '10,000 Days' (2006). But nothing has happened yet!

We're writing. We're writing vocals, but nothing's solid."

Here is the latest update from the TOOL camp thanks to METAL INSIDER:

"Something that might be encouraging to some Tool enthusiasts is that while riding with Danny to Chili John’s yesterday, I heard a lot of new Tool music (sans Maynard). This was the most new material that I’ve heard so far, although a few of the riffs and arrangements were familiar. So, what did I think? Dare I say that it sounded like… Tool (some of it reminiscent to earlier Tool stuff, with other parts pushing the envelope), and I assume that it will sound even more like Tool once the vocal melodies, etc. have been added. To answer your next question, I cannot say how far along in the writing process the band is. If I had to GUESS, I would say more than half way (and keep in mind that in the past, at least, the writing went faster once the first few [more complex] songs were finished)."

Tool's Discography:

- Undertow (1993)

- Lateralus (2001)
