Stephen from DEFTONES releases statement about the passing of Chi Cheng (RIP)
In case you missed this, former DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng died on Saturday, April 13, in a Sacramento, CA hospital. As previously reported, Chi was in a tragic car accident on November 4, 2008. As a result, he suffered some very serious brain injuries. Ever since the accident Chi was in a state of semi-consciousness after suffering severe TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury).
His DEFTONES bandmate and friend Stephen Carpenter has made a statement in behalf of the band:
"There are so many things I can say, and yet at this moment, none of it matters or compares to the loss everyone feels. There will be a hole in our lives where Chi once was. But that will be filled everyday with all of our love and memories we all have in our heart. He will always be here because of love. It's time we all give our love and best, and do our best to love. Especially ourselves, Chi would want that for everyone. All our healing will begin with love. I love you, Chi."
- Stephen, for Deftones

TUESDAY, JUNE 17, 2008: Cheng Checks In
"Hello Campers,
I've been on a personal hiatus and I apologize fer my absence. We've been locked into the studio as you know and are finishing the drum tracks on a song tentatively called "Trempest." Its heavy as fuck with a shitload of groove 'n even though its been driving me crazy as it runs through my insomniatic brain, I am really excited! I always say this shit but I truly believe this album to be well worth the wait and appreciate all your support and kind loyalty. The idea of finishing the album and getting out to play in front of y'all is a nice light at the end of my tunnel. We intend to tour extensively so don't fret. On a person note, I've been holding up 'n out. Went to a tattoo convention to support my boys at hard luck and many many other friends. If your wondering "does he always have more tattoo's than last time I saw him?" - yes, I do. I want to thank anyone who has gotten a tone tat and say it is amazingly flattering. I have finished reading Matt Ruffs "Bad Monkey" and am reading Thomas Pynchons "V-A" book on the history of civilization, and some more Buddhist literature. Took my son to see Iron Man and really enjoyed it. Hit an "X" dead center at 50 yards with my sig pistol. Clean my house, work on music and a little writing and lovin' on Colleen, Gabe and the dogs. Hope to see you all very soon!
My deepest respect as always
- Chi
P.S. I will now throw the band under the bus and let you know that we are all online playing full tilt poker for fake money. I go by "chetcheng," Chino goes by "chinote," Stef goes by "dodoubleg," and I think and frank is "fmdee." Abe doesn't play games, sorry. If you feel so inclined come 'n see if you can take our money."

Former DEFTONES Bassist Chi Cheng Passes Away At The Young Age Of 42 - Rock In Peace!
We have some very sad news to report. Former DEFTONES bassist Chi Cheng died last night at 3 AM in a Sacramento, CA hospital. His mother made the official announcement on Oneloveforchi.com.
"Our dearest Family,
This is the hardest thing to write to you. Your love and heart and devotion to Chi was unconditional and amazing. I know that you will always remember him as a giant of a man on stage with a heart for every one of you. He was taken to the emergency [sic] room and at 3 AM today his heart just suddenly stopped. He left this world with me singing songs he liked in his ear.
He fought the good fight. You stood by him sending love daily. He knew that he was very loved and never alone. I will write more later. I will be going through the oneloveforchi (website) and any other information may not be reliable. If you have any stories or messages to share please send them to the onelove site. Please hold Mae and Ming and the siblings and especially Chi’s son, Gabriel in your prayers. It is so hard to let go.
With great love and “Much Respect!" Mom J (and Chi)

DEFTONES Bassist Chi Cheng Hospitalized With Pneumonia!
Here's the latest update from Chi's mother:
"Hi Gina (founder of OneLoveForChi)! Let me send a quick blog to our lovely OneLove family.
"Mae has been staying with Chi for most of the time since Chi went into ICU on Thursday. Today when Sal and I went in to see him, he looked better than we had expected. He was quite aware of what was going on. He is still on life support and not enjoying the tube down his throat.
"He did respond to us and they are going to try to ween him off the breathing machine tomorrow. When they tried today he did not do well but he has been on it before and gotten off without incident.
"He is sedated part of the time but knows that he is near home and we are waiting to get him back to the house. He knows that we are there. Sal read him all of the comments that were sent to him and he knows that there are so many people sending prayers and love.
"Sal took a few pics for me to share with you. He is quite intensely listening to what I say and responds in different small but deliberate ways. He knows that we are waiting for him.
"Thank you all again for the prayers and support! He wanted so much to be home and you all brought him home to California and to his family. We are so grateful! Please keep him lifted in prayer. Blessings to you all family!"
-Mom J and the Cheng gang
Our thoughts and prayers are with Chi's family, friends and all of the DEFTONES fans.

There Is Hope For Chi Cheng From The Deftones; Watch This Video Of Him Lifting His Leg Up On Request!
On November 3rd, 2008, Deftones bass player Chi Cheng was in a tragic car accident. As a result, he suffered some very serious brain injuries. Ever since the accident Chi has been in a state of semi-consciousness after suffering severe TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). While Chi is still in a delicate condition, his condition is improving. As you will see on the video below, Chi can now lift up his leg on command! Chi still needs your help, Click here to donate to One Love For Chi!
Chi's improvement, is in big part thanks to the work of the International Brain Research Foundation. The method that has been used in order to help maintain Chi stable is a pioneering method of treatment that could eventually wake Chi back up. As you can imagine, this is a very expensive treatment so the Deftones family need as much help as possible in order to raise some funds.

Wake Up Fest: Chi Cheng (deftones)

Thanks to the work of the International Brain Research Foundation, Chi's condition has improved in the last year. The method that has been used in order to help maintain Chi stable is a pioneering method of treatment that could eventually wake Chi back up. As you can imagine, this is a very expensive treatment so the Deftones family need as much help as possible in order to raise some funds.
Chi’s mother, Jeanne Cheng, her son and Chi’s brother, Ming Cheng, and family friends Gina Blackmore and Dennis Morrow have been raising awareness and money that has all gone towards Chi's long and expensive treatment. Benefit shows have already commenced, and this Saturday January 22nd "Wake Up Fest" will invade Massachussets, Connecticut, Rhode Island, California, and Maryland. All ticket sales will go towards Chi's treatment. Click here for more details!
This is only one of many series of shows that "Wake Up Fest" will put together in 2011. Apart from the benefit shows, national acts are being asked to donate $.25 from their ticket sales, in order to transport Chi to a treatment facility in New Jersey for a 6 month rehabilitation treatment. Relocation is an issue, so anyone who wants to donate a motor home, tour bus, or any other mode of transportation to get Chi from coast to coast is asked to contact the family at One Love For Chi, where you can also make individual donations.
Horns Up Rocks supports "Wake Up Fest" and the "One Love For Chi" foundation. We ask every single one of you to come together and celebrate your lives by helping out one of our brothers! \m/
Here is ONE SONG FOR CHI, featuring Jim Root, Clint Lowery, Wayne Lozinak, Adam Dutkiewicz, James Shaffer, Brian Welch, Reginald Arvizu, Robert Trujillo, Ray Luzier, Dave McClain, Morgan Rose, Noah Bernardo, Mike Wengren and Sid Wilson!

NEW deftones song & video!

In 1997, I moved from my home country Colombia to the beautiful country of Germany. To make a long story short, one day at school my friends Igor and Bastiaan where standing by the locker area talking about deftones. As soon as I heard the name deftones, they had my full attention. Bastiaan let me borrow "Adrenaline" and a few days later we went to see deftones at a very small club in Cologne Germany. The stage was literally below my knees, Igor and I where getting crushed since we where at the front row. Chino didn’t help us much, since he was using us as his stage for most of the show. This was the first deftones tour in Europe!
During their amazing set they where so loud and furious that the fans ended up taking over the stage. The band got scared and had to stop playing! Chino ended up climbing on the PA to avoid getting crushed and the only way they got all of us to get off the stage was by promising us some new songs from "Around the Fur". The next few days I thought I had gone deaf at the deftones concert.
Not even a year later, Igor and I went to see deftones at the Bizarre Festival in Cologne, Germany. This time deftones where playing on a huge stage, but yet again Chino used us as his stage and the constant waves of crowd surfers, who wanted to sing with Chino, crushed us! During their killer set the rain was pouring on all of us. Half way through their set the stage was one huge flood, so the band had to stop playing so no one would end up getting electrocuted! While the stage crew was attempting to dry the stage, Chino decided to come down to the floor area and started asking: "Who wants a little Vodka?" Igor and I didn't think twice and drank a few sips of Chino’s mix: Orange Gatorade with Absolut Vodka. Once it stopped raining, the show resumed. After the band finished their set with "Head Up", the fans wanted more. To this day many consider that performance, one of the best in the history of the band!
As soon as we got back to my place, we turn on the TV. There we are on TV with one of our favorite bands, playing one of their best performances ever! After we were on TV, people would recognize us when we went to shows. That is a memory that my brother Igor and I will definitely take to our graves!
Fast forward to November 4, 2008 when bassist Chi Cheng got into a terrible car accident. At the time the future of deftones was uncertain and for the next year they focused on raising money for Chi's treatment. Chi is currently in a minimally conscious coma and only a miracle treatment can bring Chi back to full consciousness. One of the treatments his doctors are using is known as "electrotherapy". As you can imagine, this is a very expensive treatment.
In order to afford to costs of such treatment, Chi's family started a foundation called "One Love For Chi". Thanks to the support of the fans and other artists, they have been able to raise almost $100,000.
What really amazes me is the support from all the artists within the Heavy Music community. The project that has helped the most is the instrumental song that was produced by Korn’s bassist Fieldy. The project, which was recorded last summer features: Jim Root and Sid from Slipknot, Munky and Ray Luzier from Korn, Dave Mc Clain from Machine Head, Robert Trujillo from Metallica, Clint Lowery and Morgan Rose from Sevendust, Brian "Head" Welch (formerly of Korn), Wayne Lozinak from Hatebreed, Wuv from POD, Mike Wengren from Disturbed and Adam Dutkiewicz from Killswitch Engage. We encourage you to donate whatever you can to "One Love For Chi". All proceeds are going to Chi's family.
Deftones made the decision to continue making music without Chi, because they feel this is what Chi would want them to do. Sergio Vega from the band Quicksand is replacing Chi temporarily only. There is a lot of hope of seeing Chi back on stage soon; thanks to the treatment he is ongoing. This treatment would be would be impossible without everyone’s support!
The new deftones album titled "Diamond Eyes" will be released on May 4th through Reprise Records.
Here is the track list:
01. Diamond Eyes
02. Royal
03. CMND/CTRL
04. You’ve Seen the Butcher
05. Beauty School
06. Prince
07. Rocket Skates
08. Sextape
09. Risk
10. 976-EVIL
11. This Place Is Death
Here is the video for their new single titled "Skates and Rockets":
We want to dedicate this post to Chi Cheng! Keep him in your prayers and again we encourage you to donate anything you can to "One Love For Chi", even a penny makes a difference!
