2011 Mayhemfest Artists Perform Pantera’s ‘Walk’ in Tribute to Dimebag Darrell!
The 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival came to a close over a week ago at the Cruzan Ampitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida. For the first time ever the opening act of the main stage was rotated throughout the tour, so some of us got to see Machine Head and some of us got to see Trivium opening the main stage. For most the real action was on the second stages sponsored by Revolver Magazine and Jägermeister, simply because the lineup on both stages was composed of hard hitting bands that could easily be "headliners". The only downfall of the festival was the fact that In Flames had to pull out from the festival due to a family emergency.
Prior to the festivals wrap up show, several of this year’s festival artists took to the mainstage in Dallas, TX to perform a special tribute to Dimebag Darrell by performing Pantera’s "Walk".
Numerous artists on this year’s fest took the time to thank the fans and festival team in a brand new video that can be viewed below:
“The 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival was even more rad than I thought it would be! I got turned on to killer new bands, rediscovered legendary older bands, and played to the hands down best fans on the planet,” states Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin. “From the producers of the whole event down to the carpenters, everything was handled with professionalism and care, making a drama-free environment that was a pleasure to be a part of.”
“The critically acclaimed 'tour of the summer,' the The 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival, was quite an enigma to me when we first were approached with the idea,” adds Megadeth vocalist and guitarist Dave Mustaine. “But lemme tell ya, it became real clear that we had made a brilliant decision! I was honored to play for John Reese and whole Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival team.”
“The The 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival was certainly a touring highlight for me in the seven years I have been in Megadeth,” states Megadeth drummer Shawn Drover. “So many fantastic bands, amazing crowds every night and the overall positive vibes both on and off stage between bands, crews and the entire festival staff will be something I will remember for life.”
“What an amazing summer on the the 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival! A huge thanks to John Reese and everyone involved for creating such a band friendly atmosphere for metal and hard rock,” adds Machine Head drummer Dave McClain. “Machine Head are honored to have been a part of it for the second time and we hope there's more in the future!”

The 2011 Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival came to a close yesterday at the Cruzan Ampitheatre in West Palm Beach, Florida. These years festival featured:

A message from WATAIN!

"North and South America have now been left in ashes, and with that the "Lawless Darkness Tour 2010" is over. Hail to those who made it possible, and those who made it even more triumphant; North: Watain Disciples USA, Goatwhore, Black Anvil, Decibel Magazine, Liz and Dave at Earsplit, Jimmy and the Duff's crew, Josh at Dean Guitars, Engl Amps, Black Witchery, Negative Plane, Averse Sefira, Hod. South: Arma Productions, Hells Angels Antofagasta, Careloco and The Chilean Watain Militia, Kythrone, the mighty Mortuary Drape, the Tumba crew, and all those whose presence strengthened us along the long and winding road through hell and back. You know who you are. A special mention to S.L of The Devil's Blood who took on the lead guitar duties in North America; hail brother! Finally, a thunderous salute to our iron crew, without whom none of this would have been possible." -WATAIN
Here is a clip from Swedish TV (with English subtitles) about WATAIN's appearance at the Sweden Rock festival in June earlier this year. The concert was aired on the Swedish national radio program "P3-Live" on Thursday December 23rd:
WATAIN received the following awards and nominations in 2010:
#1 Album Of The Year - Close Up Magazine
#1 Album Of The Year - Sweden Rock Magazine
#1 Band Of The Year - Terrorizer Readers Poll
#1 Personality Of The Year - Terrorizer Readers Poll
#2 Album Of The Year - Decibel Magazine
WATAIN have also been nominated for:
"Hardrock" Category of the Swedish Grammy Awards
"Hardrock" Category of the P3 Gold Awards
"Nordic Album 2010" of the Nordic Music Price Awards
In light of all this, the band would like you to contemplate upon the following lines:
"It is the magic combination of fierceness and beauty that makes the Wolf an exception even in nature. Revered outlaws, feared in their bestial nature, yet also objects of fascination and curiosity, of naturally inhabited and unreachable grace, that men love to hate, and hate to love. But regardless of what judgement the vox populi might pass on the nighttime predators, they remain just that; a rare breed of hunters; alone, aside, untamed, always hungry..."

WATAIN: The stench, that putrid stench…

When we arrived to the carnage with a group of headbangers, Black Anvil took the stage. Good stuff from a former Hardcore band, who blurred the lines between Hardcore Punk and Black Metal, to create their own brand of music.
Up next was Goatwhore. Hail the Goat! The brothers never disappoint with the onslaught of blackened Thrash Metal. The sound was not all that great, but the band knows how to get Metal heads all riled-up. Always refreshing is to hear this band play tracks from “Funeral Dirge For The Rotting Sun”, as it is to hear their latest stuff, “Carving Out The Eyes Of God”, which absolutely destroys.
Then it was time for the main rotted final course: Watain.
I was not sure what to expect since this was my first time seeing this band live. There was a lingering stench in the air. It truly smelled like entrails and blood. Pure evil. It all made sense once Watain took the stage. The satanic stage, blessed with animal skulls, and drenching blood, the corpse paint, the negative vibe in the air. It was all demented and a great production, but Watain’s brilliance is in their music.
Flawless Black metal, with slabs of Death, and technicality that was simply awesome.
The band played some classics that got the old school Black Metal maniacs pumped, and also a showcase of their latest album titled “Lawless Darkness”, not surprisingly the #2 record in the “Top 40 Extreme Albums of 2010”, compiled by Decibel magazine.
Watain with their horrific brand of Heady Metal demonstrated why they are such an important Metal band, possibly the most important Black Metal band of this generation. This band shows no boundaries, and their music is a destructive machine that did not stop until everyone in the audience is taken aback. \m/
Here fan footage of Watain's legendary performance:

Tommy Vext: STRONGER THAN ALL

While all the bands kicked ass, the highlight of the night was when Tommy returned to the stage after 17 months (his last show had been on May 17, 2009 with Snot in California), and played an emotional acoustic set. Tommy was joined by his best friend Doc Coyle from God Forbid, who is also his band-member on a new project they recently started working on (pre-production started on December 9th).
The project was suppose to start months ago, but it had to come to a halt when he was viciously attacked by his own brother. Here is an extract of an interview with Tommy (courtesy of Metal Insider) explaining what happened that horrific day.
"On the evening of September 19th I was leaving my apartment in Brooklyn to visit my sister and was struck over the back of my head from behind during an attempted robbery. I fell and turned around and was struck again with a crowbar. The metal bar broke my left arm and this is when I saw my attacker. A 6’1, 320 pound man covered in dirt & blood. It was my estranged brother. Homeless, intoxicated and desperate, he repeatedly hit me on the back and sides with the weapon as I tried to shield myself from the blows. I managed to get on my feet and throw him off of me. I took off to a neighbors house and called 911. The ambulance arrived and I was rushed to the Hospital. After multiple X-rays & MRI’s, the doctors found I had a fractured skull and broken arm. I was discharged the next day. Because my attacker had not been apprehended I was staying with a friend in Manhattan during the first few days of my recovery. Four days after the incident, I collapsed in a Manhattan restaurant and was rushed back to the Hospital. This time the doctors found I had been internally bleeding since the 19th and now my spleen had ruptured. I went into emergency surgery at Cornell Hospital where my spleen was removed and I received a blood transfusion."
Here is a video that our good friend Tommy Jones from "The Studio" in New Jersey, shot and edited at the benefit. If you couldn't make it, but still want to help Tommy out. You can donate any amount via his PayPal account: tommyvext@gmail.com. We also have an EXCLUSIVE interview with Tommy coming soon!

Holiday bashing with Horns Up Rocks

All of a sudden we were all forced to find out what Lies Beneath, and what lies beneath is some head crushing furious Metal! Next up, was a band that always ignites the party Metal with the use of Heavy artillery and beer funnels: Slam One Down. Finishing the night was Fin’Amor, who laid down every part of their set with extreme precision. All in all, another night of bringing people together for some head-banging exercises.

"Brutal Bitches Productions has come a long way since forming in January. Last week's amazing show has proven that heavy music still thrives in the Bronx. The amazing line up of bands absolutely K-I-L-L-E-D I-T. There is so much underground talent out here, and we are glad to be putting our own dent in the history of the Metal scene. We look forward to continuing the tradition for the hungry fans and skilled bands of our area throughout 2011 and beyond" (Alissa Shimansky of Brutal Bitches Productions)

Long Island UNITES

Endwell: "Endwell formed in Queens, New York in 2003 and started gaining popularity through local shows. After gaining enough experience through various local shows, the band independently recorded and released their first EP titled The Missing Pieces in 2005. The band toured the country for various hardcore bands in support of the new EP and began expanding their fan basis with their energetic live shows. They won a Battle of the Bands, which earned them a spot on the Hellfest bill. Their minor success caught the eye of Bayside's front-man Anthony Raneri. Bayside was signed to Victory Records and suggested to Endwell that they should attempt to get signed to the label.[1] Members of Endwell grew up listening to various Victory bands including Earth Crisis and Hatebreed." SOURCE: Wikipedia
The Judas Syndrome: "Within the last few months The Judas Syndrome have been very busy spreading their craft; they have recently opened for legendary bands like Vision Of Disorder, Despised Icon and Nile. The band has also released a phenomenal video for their song "Death of the Soul", which was directed by Frankie Nasso and former God Forbid guitarist Dallas Coyle. Additionally the band has been on constant rotation on Sirius XM Liquid Metal, on WSOU 89.5 FM, and on Music Choice. Today they debut their video on MTV's Headbangers Ball!" SOURCE: Horns Up Rocks
Lies Beneath: "A five-piece metal band with influences ranging from thrash, to death-metal and hardcore. With classic dual-guitar attack, a crushing rhythm section, dynamic vocals and brooding soundscapes, this band creates an undeniable presence and demands captivation from any audience." SOURCE: Lies Beneath
Doomsday Morning: "The music of Doomsday Mourning creates an interesting soundscape that delivers an onslaught of rhythmic, melodic and lyrical brutality. The new EP entitled: The Science Of Exploitation showcases a very interesting form of heavy music featuring guest vocals from Emmure, The Judas Syndrome, Endwell, From The Pawn & Born Of Osiris. This is straight to the point, honest & real New York attitude music." SOURCE: Doomsday Morning
The Apparition: "Spreading the haunting the best way possible, brews, beards, and breakdowns." SOURCE: The Apparition
If He Dies: "I saw these guys open a show a few weeks ago and was blown the fuck away." SOURCE: Tim Strohsnitter from Jefferson Avenue Productions
Retarded Peep Booth: "Since this Long Island, New York, United States quintet first formed in late 2010, worrying about genre limitations has never been a priority. Taking musical chances, and buying things you've seen, however, have been. While Retard Peep Booth are as heavy as any band out there, they are beholden to no one scene and no preconceived notions of what Grindcore music should be." SOURCE: Retarded Peep Booth

No Mercy Metal Showcase - Part DOS

The underground Heavy Music scene is going through very exciting times here in New York City. There are a vast amount of young up and coming bands that have a crushing sound, and the fans are starting to notice this. One of the top reasons why we started Horns Up Rocks is because we know how hungry both the bands and the fans are for something new and original. I think collectively, the Heavy Music fans are getting tired of the same musical equation. So we predict some very interesting times for the Heavy Music scene here in New York City.
We are very proud and stoked to announce that Horns Up Rocks will be co-sponsoring the No Mercy Metal Showcase! The main reason why we decided to do this is because we believe whole-heartedly in the movement that Gotham Rocks, Tech-9 Music and Tim No 37 have created. So on Saturday July 24th, you are all invited for Part Dos of the No Mercy Metal Showcase, in which you will get to experience first hand what we are talking about.
There will be 9 killer bands performing at Santos Party House, which is New York's #1 club! Here are the details:
DATE: Saturday July 24, 2010
LOCATION: Santos Party House
ADDRESS: 96 Lafayette St.
New York, NY 10013
LINEUP:
3:45 Dush - absolutely up the minute in their approach to aggressive music, yet at the same time, they draw on melodies and atmospherics that evoke ancient truths, summoning to mind the Bronze Age and the mysteries of the cradle of civilization.
4:30 Until Ashes - We're not here to change the world, but we're here to make it at least a tad bit more bearable.
5:15 We Fall As Heroes - They're not ordinary, because if you ask a random metal head in Queens, they know about WFAH.
6:00 From Bliss To Devastation - Music and lyrics filled with passion and written from the heart, live performances filled with raw energy and emotion allow them to connect with their audience.
6:45 Letchworth - Their style varies from fist throwing, heart pounding breakdowns, to melodic melodies.
7:30 Eyes of The Sun - Our music is intended to create a range of emotions for the listener that we ourselves experience and extract from.
8:15 Facing The Sun - came together as a band in 2007 when some like-minded, blood thirsty folk decided that they wanted to redefine what metal is today.
9:00 Embrace Agony - Melodic heavy metal band with methodical and creative approach to their music that blends different elements of metal, hardcore and hard rock into one powerful delivery.
9:45 Severed - managed to survive and conquer the fickle nature of the NY music world through an indomitable work ethic and a musical ideology that favors quality songwriting above all else.
Hosted by Mother Unique!

On Friday July 2nd and Monday July 5th, history was made in Brooklyn as Faith No More took center stage at the "Williamsburg Waterfront". We have two stories to share with you about this two epic nights, but first is first: Faith No More are one of the best live bands to ever play in New York City and we hope that their strong comeback influences many up and coming artists. They not only sounded crisp, but they dominated the audience like very few do. I mean, when you have Mike Patton fronting a band and legendary musicians such as Mike Bordin, Billy Bould and Jon Hudson backing him up, little to nothing can compare to the groove and vibe this phenomenal band creates.
On Friday we held our first ticket contest, and gave a chance for a fan to go experience the show. For Horns Up Rocks the most important mission is to create a bond between the fans and the artists they love. And if we can make a fans dream come true, then we are doing our job. The lucky winner was Billy Dawson, a fan who was able to go to the show thanks to Horns Up Rocks. What really stood out to us as fans, was the fact that he really wanted to go to the show but family is his priority and he didn't want to spend money on himself. We support the GOOD parents out there! Here is Billy's take on the concert (with pictures and all):

"This was the one band of my favorites i had never seen live. Last chance I had was 1992 in Dallas when they toured with GnR and Metallica. I opted for Lollapalooza the next day (with no regrets at all!!!) Fast forward 18 years - (they only toured in '98 after that) - to Brooklyn. Thanks to Godfrey Morales and the Horns Up Rocks crew! Cary wasn't going to let me go to Brooklyn because it was too expensive for her, and if she had the baby or any problems, its hard to get home fast (subway, traffic, etc). I was going to have to see the show in ....puke...Philly!!! BUT - i won tix to Brooklyn - and so it was written.... My friend said it was "divine intervention - you can't mess with that" he was right."

The show on Monday (which was the original tour date) couldn't have been any better. The weather was perfect, the beer was cold (except for the Heineken), the vibe was simply amazing and the Horns Up Rocks crew ran into a lot of great people. Once Faith No More started playing, following a very annoying MC, the night turned into musical perfection. The band was very excited to be back on stage in front of a packed house, and every song was simply perfect. The 5 hours of traffic from upstate New york, the Subway problems, plus guiding the lost girl who was on the wrong side of Brooklyn! Were classy minuets once this timeless band played one of the best concerts that Horns Up Rocks has ever experienced. If you have a chance to see Faith No More Live, do your ears a favor and go see them live!
