LIFE OF AGONY Calls It Quits; Statement From Sal Abruscato Available!

Sal Abruscato from A Pale Horse Named Death (his NEW band), has an extensive history in the Heavy Music world thanks to his stellar work with Life Of Agony and Type O Negative, in which his role was to kick ass on the drums.

With Type O Negative he recorded: "Slow, Deep & Hard", "Origin Of The Feces", and "Bloody Kisses", while with Life Of Agony he recorded "River Runs Red", "Ugly", "River Runs Again", and "Broken Valley".

Abruscato was recently interviewed by Maciej Szatko in Wroclaw, Poland. This is what he had to say when asked about the future of Life Of Agony:

"We're not gonna play [anymore]. We moved out of our studio. We all kind of feel like we're at the end. We're never gonna make another record, because of those kinds of problems I was talking about [earlier in the interview] — we can't agree on writing a song. And Keith [Caputo, vocals] wants to pursue his life and his lifestyle. And that's pretty much the reason why also I've moved on and I'm doing my own thing… to just keep going; I didn't want my career to stop with Life Of Agony. Life Of Agony doesn't tour, Life Of Agony doesn't do much. And so we were at a point where it was like… We did the last three shows in July [2011] and then we moved out of our studio, and that's it. I don't foresee anything in the future; I highly doubt it. I don't know how that would happen."

The Horns Up Rocks Top 10 Interviews Of 2011!

During 2011, Horns Up Rocks founder Jo Schüftan had the chance to interview dozens of artists about their various musical endeavors. While most of the interviews were very memorable, here are the 10 that caused the most impact within the Heavy Music scene. Here are the Horns Up Rocks Top 10 Interviews Of 2011!

10) Joey Zampella(Life Of Agony):

Life Of Agony is a proud member of the New York Hardcore community, and along with Type O Negative and Biohazard, they have become synonymous to the New York City underground music scene. On the exact day of our first year anniversary, we had the chance to interview Life Of Agony's guitarist Joey Z at Duff's Brooklyn!

9) Shawn Drover (Megadeth):

Megadeth has also proved that Thrash Metal doesn't stand any sissies and that only the strong survive. Many failed while fighting their own demons, but this legendary band found their way out of the darkness. You can't help admiring the fact that so many years later the band members are still in full vigor and at the pinnacle of their creativity. During these years Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, we had the chance to interview Megadeth's drummer Shawn Drover about the Big 4, their NEW album titled 'TH1RT3EN' and about the impact that festivals like the Mayhem Festival have on the entire Heavy Music scene. Check it out!

8) Richard Christy (Death, The Howard Stern Show & Charred Walls Of The Damned):

During the Charred Walls of the Damned record release party for their second studio album entitled "Cold Winds on Timeless Days", which took place at Idle Hands in New York City. We were able to steal Richard away from his fans to chat about this epic NEW release, as well as his career in radio. We also discussed his relationship with the late great Chuck Shuldiner from the legendary Heavy Metal band Death.

7) Sal Abruscato (Life Of Agony, Type O Negative & A Pale Horse Named Death):

Sal Abruscato is synonymous to what the New York City Heavy Music scene represents: hard uncompromised work, original song writing, and not holding back when creating music. When we first heard A Pale Horse Named Death (his brand new band), our ears couldn't believe this man's vocal abilities. We had the chance to interview Sal at the Official Listening Party at Idle Hands Bar in New York City for the NEW album by A Pale Horse Named Death titled 'And Hell With Follow Me'.

6) Jamey Jasta (Hatebreed, Kingdom Of Sorrow & Jasta) and Shawn "Clown" Crahan (Slipknot):

Jamey Jasta is living proof that if you do everything in your power to accomplish your personal goals, you can live your own dream. This interview took place in Los Angeles, California, at the "Black Carpet" during the 2011 Revolver Golden Gods Awards, joining us in mid interview is none-other then Shawn Crahan # 6 (Clown from Slipknot) who discusses how Jamey Jasta reinvented Hardcore and Heavy Metal.

5) Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath & Heaven and Hell):

Here is an interview with one of the godfathers of Metal: Geezer Butler. This interview was conducted in Los Angeles, California, at the 2011 Revolver Golden Gods Awards. \m/

4) Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad & The Devin Townsend Project):

As we all know, Devin Townsend is one of the pioneers of "Progressive Metal", but when we chatted with him he made it clear that he doesn't sit back and enjoy his past success, for Townsend the most important thing is that his music is always evolving in order for him to keep bringing original music to the masses.

3) Vinny Stigma (Agnostic Front & Stigma):

Prior to the 2011 Black N Blue Bowl we had the chance to chat with Vinnie Stigma from the legendary New York Hardcore band Agnostic Front! During this interview, Stigma, who is the ambassador of New York Hardcore, talked to us about what it meant to be co-headlining such a historic event and about the NEW Agnostic Front album 'My Life, My Way'!

2) Phil Demmel and Dave McClain (Machine Head):

During these years Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, we had the chance to catch up with lead guitarist Phil Demmel and drummer Dave McClain, to discuss with them the NEW Machine Head album 'Unto The Locust' and how they keep themselves focused while living on the road. He also discussed the impact that Mario Comesanas (RIP) had in the Heavy Music scene.

1) Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan & Hellyeah):

This interview took place in Los Angeles, California at the "Black Carpet" during the 3rd installment of the Revolver Golden Gods Awards. During the interview we talked with Vinnie about Pantera's legacy! So grab a black tooth and enjoy it!

We want to thank all the people who made all these interviews possible, and of course all of you for checking them out! In 2012, we're bringing all sorts of surprises your way, so stay tuned! \m/

A Pale Horse Named Death Listening Party at Idle Hands Bar

On Thursday, May 25, our friends at Idle Hands Bar bring you the Official A Pale Horse Named Death listening party for their brand new album titled "And Hell Will Follow Me". Not only will the music be cranked and the drink specials will be poured to the masses, but the bands founder and front-man Mr. Sal Abruscato (Life of Agony) will be there to meet his fans. Here is the Official press release:

"A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH's debut album "And Hell Will Follow Me" is set to be released June 14th on SPV/Steamhammer. To celebrate the release of the album, the band will be hosting an exclusive listening party at Idle Hands Bar in New York, NY. Idle Hands is located at 25 Avenue B. The party is open to the public and members of APHND will of course be in attendance. Don't miss what is sure to be a killer event with drink specials and your chance to hear the new album before it hits stores."

Here is the artist bio:

"A PALE HORSE NAMED DEATH is the brainchild of Brooklyn, NY native Sal Abruscato, and sounds like Alice in Chains mysteriously sneaking up behind Type O Negative with a butcher knife while being filmed for a future episode of "Law & Order". Critical acclaim has been quick upon the announcement of the album's June release.

Sal's partner in crime on "And Hell Will Follow Me" is Matt Brown, sound engineer extraordinaire and guitarist of fellow NY band SEVENTH VOID. "The chemistry between me and Matt is unique and flawless very rare in today's music. We are the murdering evil version of Lennon and McCartney." says Abruscato.

Brown adds, "Sal asked me if I would help to take these songs to the next level. I took on this project for my friend, to find some closure in rough times. The music is just an extension of our friendship and our passion for creativity."

The album artwork was done by Sam Shearon aka Mr. Sam, who has previously done work for Rob Zombie, Fear Factory and Cradle of Filth to name a few, and features a 20 page booklet with artwork for each individual song. Additionally, the Double LP version will feature a never before heard bonus track called "Pick Up Truck".

To top that all off, Life of Agony's Keith Caputo lent background vocals to four tracks and Lou Reed's saxophonist Ulrich Krieger guests on "Die Alone". Bobby Hambel from Biohazard - who also plays with the band live - played the guitar leads on three tunes.

APHND is also a force to be reckoned with live, with shows and festivals already planned in both the U.S. and Europe. Alongside Sal, Matt and Bobby, the live line-up places Type O and Seventh Void drummer Johnny Kelly behind the kit, and Eric Morgan on bass.

"This is my pinnacle creation, the best album I have ever done." commented Sal. And after listening, most people are tending to agree."

Life Of Agony: Brooklyn Legends

Brooklyn's Life of Agony surfaced in 1989 when singer Keith Caputo, guitarist Joey Zampella, and bassist Alan Robert, took the New York underground scene by storm. They quickly perfected their angst-filled hybrid of Heavy Metal and Hardcore, obtaining a devoted audience in the process. On the eve of signing with Roadrunner Records, the band recruited former Type O Negative drummer Sal Abruscato as a permanent member. The end result was the first Life Of Agony album “River Runs Red”, which became an instant classic. Thanks to their straight-up energy and aggression in a crossover format, the group toured extensively upon its release.

Once the tour was completed, Life Of Agony went back into the studio to work on their next album titled "Ugly", which signaled a complete change of the band's signature Heavy sound. The album resembled the sounds of the alternative stars of the day, especially Stone Temple Pilots, which the record-buying public didn’t favor. Regardless of the record sales, Life O Agony was still able to retain their audience and the resulting tour was a success. Evidence of this success were their tours with Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Type O Negative, and Anthrax. After the end of the tour, drummer Sal Abruscato exited the band and was replaced by Dan Richardson (formerly from Pro Pain/Crumbsuckers). Their next release was "Soul Searching Sun", which followed the same formula as its predecessor, and was again met by a varied response.

Before the band was scheduled to go on tour, singer Keith Caputo left the group because his heart was no longer in the music. The other band members were crushed, but because of their commitments with the record label, they needed to fill the spot right away. Former Ugly Kid Joe vocalist Whitfield Crane, who had told Joey Z during an Anthrax show about his intentions to play heavier music, filed Caputo’s shoes.

The new lineup only had one week to rehearse and get to know each other musically. Once the tour ended, they went back to the studio and decided that they didn't want to continue as Life of Agony without Caputo. They even flirted with the idea of having their bassist Alan Robert singing and having Stuck Mojo bassist Corey Lowery fill his spot. This strategy never worked and the band disbanded in April of 1999.

In 2003, the original lineup reunited for two shows. The reunion led to a live album titled "River Runs Again", followed by a studio album titled "Broken Valley" (released in June 2005).

In 2009, Life of Agony performed their legendary debut album "River Runs Red" in front of a sold out crowd in Brussels Belgium. They filmed the concert in its entirety, and later released a CD/DVD package titled "20 Years Strong: River Runs Red, Live in Brussels".

Now on a more personal note: In January 1998, I went to see Life Of Agony in Toronto not to long after coming back from Italy. Excited as I was about finally going to see the band that got me through some very rough times in my life, everything from addiction to dealing with my father’s death. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience on that stage. That night I saw two amazing bands: Megadeth and Life Of Agony...

So the show starts with “River Runs Red”, but what I heard was totally noticeable. Everyone started saying: “Hey that’s not Keith!” “What the fuck?!” Apparently no one was informed that Keith had left the band, man was I pissed! After waiting for so long to see Life Of Agony... and I get Whitfield Crane instead of Keith Caputo. I was never a fan of Ugly Kid Joe and I certainly was not going to like him singing Keith's songs. There was only one thing left to do to show my frustration, and this is when I noticed one thing: everyone was just as frustrated as I was! So what do I do next? I start a “We want Keith” chant. Crane definitely saw and heard the crowds discomfort, as Toronto raised their middle fingers instead of their horns, demanding Keith Caputo. I had no choice but to enjoy the instrumental aspect of the show. With that being said, I hope that Life Of Agony can come back to Toronto at and give me the concert I so badly want to see.

No matter what, I am and will always be a fan of Life Of Agony for life! And for that I raise both hands in the air and give this band the Horns Up!!!! Cheers.

A Pale Horse Named Death

Sal Abruscato, former drummer of Type O Negative and current drummer for Life of Agony, decided to leave his comfort zone behind the drums and to pick up the guitar. With his guitar work in A Pale Horse Named Death’s new record, titled “And Hell Will Follow Me”, he has proven that he is more than just an amazing drummer. On songs like “As Black As My Heart” and “Die Alone”, you can clearly hear his Type O Negative roots. I am glad to hear this in his music, it makes missing Peter Steele a little easier. Sal is currently in Europe with Life of Agony, but word on the street is that A Pale Horse Named Death is holding auditions in February 2011 for the drummer and bassist spots. Right now the band consists of Sal on lead vocals/guitar and Matt Brown on guitar/backup vocals. Once this band finalizes its lineup, they will be ready to go on tour and to kick some ass on stage! This will be a good time for all concert goers.

Right now you can visit their website and enter contests to win prizes. Currently there is a contest for winning a signed copy of their new record titled “And Hell Will Follow Me”. I suggest that you listen to it from beginning to the end, and pay close attention to the very last track “As Black As My Heart”, which I personally think is their best song.

According to various sources, Sal is already writing the next album. It is refreshing to see how much dedication Sal and Matt are putting into this band for the fans, for themselves, and for the ones they miss dearly. In the sleeve there is mention about Peter Steele R.I.P. I am sure that Pete is very proud of Sal. I strongly believe that A Pale Horse Named Death will get more exposure and that they have the potential of being one of the best bands of 2011...Cheers
