Philip H. Anselmo Premieres NEW Song Out Of Upcoming Solo Record!

Philip Anselmo, the kid from PANTERA, DOWN, SUPERJOINT RITUAL, etc, has announced that his first ever solo album will be furiously unleashed on July 16 via his own Housecore Records (MRI/Megaforce). Entitled 'Walk Through Exits Only', Anselmo's NEW sonic assault will be available digitally, on CD and on vinyl. Here is a taste of what you can expect to hear. This song is called "Usurper's Bastard Rant" and it has a similar vibe to Anselmo's SUPERJOINT RITUAL. Check it out at the following link:

The album was produced by Anselmo along with Michael Thompson, and recorded at Philip's NOLA studio: Nodferatu's Lair. Anselmo's band THE ILLEGALS — guitarist Marzi Montazeri (ex-SUPERJOINT RITUAL) and drummer José Manuel Gonzales (WARBEAST) — were a big part of the musical journey that listeners will experience on 'Walk Through Exits Only'. The album's eight songs are as unstrained as it gets, from "Battalion Of Zero" to "Usurper's Bastard Rant", to the album's title track that goes against the grain and right through the exits. Brash, brutal guitars cut through punishing percussion as Anselmo screams with uncompromising ferocity and uncontainable fire.

"It wasn't about doing a paint-by-numbers Thrash or Heavy Metal record", Anselmo commented. "It's an angry album that only I could do. I don't see anybody else out there screaming about the same shit I'm screaming about. On this album, there isn't any wordplay, there isn't any hidden message, it's all right there in front of you."

Tarja Turunen: NEW Album Title Release Date Announced!

The very talented Tarja Turunen has announced that her 3rd solo album is called 'Colours In The Dark' and will be out on August 23 via earMUSIC, the Hamburg, Germany-based international rock label which is part of Edel Group.

Despite her light and shiny personality, Tarja's music has always been dressed "in black" — the color of heavy rock, of mystery and elegance.

With Tarja's new album, fans will find out what happens when a splice of color is added to the mix. Or — better said — when the full-color spectrum enters the picture it does not cover the black but makes it shine through with many emotions and landscapes.

We recently spoke with Tarja about her latest musical project 'Colours In The Dark':

Tarja Turunen: Reveals More Details About Her 3rd Solo Album!

Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli, or simply Tarja, possesses one of the most unique voices in all of music. You obviously know her for the amazing work she did with NIGHTWISH, but she has clearly moved passed the shadow of the band that made a big mistake when they decided to fire her via a letter.

Tarja has announced that she will be working once again with Dirk Rudolph on the artwork for her new solo album. As she told us during a recent interview (listen below), the album will be out this Summer via earMUSIC.

"You can expect, as before, beautiful photos, maybe more shocking this time". The record was mixed in Austin, Texas with producer Tim Palmer (PEARL JAM, U2). Here are some of the song titles:

- "Lucid Dreamer"
- "Neverlight"
- "500 Letters"
- "Never Enough"

A lyric video for the song "Never Enough" was recently filmed in Zlin, Czech Republic and will make its online debut soon. Tarja says: "I didn't want to make a traditional, boring lyric video for the song, so I am going to appear on the video not just the lyrics of the song…. This video is not what we can call the official first music video from my new album, but just an improved version of a lyric video. The filming took only couple hours with Martin, who worked also on directing my first solo live rock DVD, 'Act I'".

Tarja Turunen: 3rd Solo Album, Future In NIGHTWISH & Being A Musician Mother!

Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli, or simply Tarja, possesses one of the most unique voices in all of music. You obviously know her for the amazing work she did with NIGHTWISH, the band that decided to fire her via a letter (yes a letter), which obviously reflect the communication problems that the band is famous for.

While this obviously pissed Tarja off, today she sees it as a blessing in disguise. Following her departure from NIGHTWISH, she began her solo career and has never looked back. 2013 is smiling at Tarja, who became a mother last year, and has completed the recording sessions for her third solo studio album. Instead of us telling you about the progress of the album, we decided to give Tarja a call and get an update directly from. She also talks about IF there are any chances of her reuniting with NIGHTWISH. Here is her update:

SOULFLY/CAVALERA CONSPIRACY Guitarist Marc Rizzo Releases NEW Single & It Crushes!

New Jersey native Marc Rizzo became Max Cavalera's musical ally in October of 2003 when he joined SOULFLY to record 'Prophecy'. Ever since then Max and Marc have developed a signature sound that is recognized by thousands of fans worldwide. Marc is also the co-founder of CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, the band that reunited Brazilian Heavy Music brothers Max and Iggor Cavalera. What really made the difference between Rizzo and former SOULFLY guitarists is that he not only has phenomenal guitar skills, but he works very hard on making sure that his guitar sound blends in perfectly with Max's ever-changing vision.

Today, Rizzo has released a NEW single called "Downside Up", via iTunes, Amazon and other digital retailers. The song is the first single off Rizzo's fourth solo album, which was recently recorded with producer Chris "Zeuss" Harris (HATEBREED, SUICIDE SILENCE, ALL THAT REMAINS, SHADOWS FALL, SOULFLY). SYSTEM OF A DOWN's Musical Future Might Include 'Greatest Hits' CD With Previously Unreleased Tracks, But No NEW Music!

Recently, Musik Universe chatted with SYSTEM OF A DOWN's front man Serj Tankian about the bands future plans. The interview took place on August 11 at this year's Heavy MTL festival at Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

About writing NEW music:

The band has made it clear in recent interviews that no plans have yet been made for the group to begin work on a NEW studio album.

Future releases:

"I think we have about four or five unreleased tracks that we finished before. We need to talk about what to do with them, etc. But I would be very open to releasing, like, a greatest-hits record with a few [previously] unreleased tracks. However, we haven't really discussed it, so I don't wanna make a promise."

Solo project vs SYSTEM OF A DOWN:

"It's an interesting dynamic, I think, writing by yourself and writing with people. When you have a very focused idea, a very concrete kind of understanding of what you wanna present and have the skills and the ability to completely present it the exact way that you want to, it's much more conducive to do it yourself. If you have ideas that require other people's input to kind of make it something else than what you have, then a collaboration — whether it's with SYSTEM or anyone else for that matter — would be much smarter."

SYSTEM OF A DOWN's Serj Tankian Talks About Bands Reunion, Political Activism & Side Projects!

Serj Tankian from SYSTEM OF A DOWN never lets his musical creativity rest. His next musical project? Serj will be releasing his third solo album entitled 'Harakiri' on July 10th. Recently, he presented the world his brand NEW lyric video for "Figure It Out", check it out below.

So what's up with SYSTEM OF A DOWN? DEFTONES and SYSTEM OF A DOWN have announced that they will be joining forces on what will be a series of live shows, that promise to be loud and dangerous! Below is the confirmed list of tour dates.

In celebration of the release of Tankian's NEW solo album and the return of SYSTEM OF THE DOWN,  the dudes from Metalsucks interviewed Tankian. Here is what went down!

MS: "Million dollar question: why do we pretend that we don’t know [a lyric from "Figure It Out"?"

Tankian: [Laughs] "Well . . . that’s a good question. We pretend we don’t know because we’ve already accepted the pill; we’ve already taken the pill. Once we take a system for granted as what we know, as all that we know – then we can’t see the abuses in it because we can’t imagine a world without it. The abusive, kind of globalist hegemony that we’ve created with the WTO, World Bank, IMF and all these organizations in this type of system that it’s set for us — we’ve assumed for the last 30 years that this is the golden grail, but it’s not. We’re finally seeing the cracks in it and seeing how it’s creating huge disparity in classes, economic imbalance, and the environmental destruction that it’s adding to around the world. People are getting out on the streets saying “we’re not going to do this anymore”. So now we can see these cracks – now it’s okay to see them. If you’re referring to “Figure It Out,” which I know you are . . .

[Laughter]

"It’s interesting. I made it into a kind of comical political song where instead of grappling with the complexities of trying to figure out who is really responsible behind this — is it the government or a multinational corporation? — I made it simple; I said it’s one guy – you know, almost like “get him!” That’s the song. That’s why it’s repetitious. That’s why it’s quirky, but at the same time it drives the point that CEOs are the disease. But we could be the CEOs too; it’s not that far off. In other words, this is the system that we’ve accepted to be true and that we all aspire to that’s created this mess —not one person, obviously.

"I think it would be pretty hard to miss the message! Getting a little bit deeper into “Figure It Out,” it’s hard to miss that it’s a very big departure stylistically from your last work, Imperfect Harmonies, which was a very intensively layered, carefully orchestrated album. This has a much more stripped down, up-tempo kind of punk-y vibe to it. I almost get kind of a “Paranoid” Black Sabbath feel from the riffs. What was driving this change in direction?

"Well, I never want to make the same record again – so I’ll start there. Elect the Dead was the first record for me without a rock band. It was like, “how do I make a rock record without a rock band” as a new experience? I think it was successful in that way. Imperfect Harmonies was about making a brand new sound that I had never heard before. At the time, I had just done the Elect the Dead Symphony so I was very much into the orchestral vibe. I wanted to make the orchestra be like the guitar in my production and do almost like a film score kind of a record – which I did. I think that it’s unique and cool in that sense. With this one, this is like the fastest record that I have ever written, and, like you said, it’s up-tempo and punk themed. It’s different than both of them. It’s far different than Imperfect Harmonies and Elect the Dead obviously because they’re both rock records. The next one will be different as well because the next one will be Jazz-Iz Christ." [Laughs]

MS: "[laughs] Jazz-Iz Christ?"

Tankian: "Yeah, it’s a jazz record that we finished called Jazz-Iz Christ. I also finished my first actual symphony without vocals– it’s called Orca — and I finished an electronic record called Fucktronic that’s a duo with Jimmy [Urine] from Mindless Self Indulgence. It’s a British gangster kind of film without visuals. It’s a concept record."

MS: "That’s a lot in the works for 2012, between everything that you’ve just described – the four albums and the touring that’s coming up this summer. This has to be a pretty intense, to say the least, year for you."

Tankian: "So far it has been. Last year was probably my busiest year, but this year is turning out to be just as busy if not worse." [Laughs]

MS: "That’s what you call a high quality problem."

Tankian: "Yeah, it is a good problem. I love what I do. Sometimes you get tired and you’re overwhelmed, but otherwise I love it."

MS: "So the new album – the first new album to be specific – is called Harakiri (out July 10th)— where exactly does samurai-style ritual suicide fit into this record?"

Tankian: "The first song was the title track that I wrote after experiencing the global disappearance of bird and fish species that we experienced in January of 2011. Millions of birds and fish died right before the Japanese nuclear meltdown and tsunami stuff. You look at all of this, you’re like “wait a minute, this is not normal. Something is really off here”. For me, there was something very strong, symbolic and ominous about the disappearance of all these species. The first song that I wrote came from that experience and trying to find what it meant to me. The rest of the songs came after, and pretty quickly, I might say. They’re not all tied to the concept of Harakiri, which is, like you said, Japanese suicide . . . respectful suicide of the Japanese by cutting the belly. If you look at the time that we’re living in for the past threee years you can easily affix the term “harakiri” on different songs. You can call “Reality TV” cultural harakiri. You can call “Figure It Out” political harakiri."

MS: "As our conversation has already more than hinted, Harakiri is a record that is very deeply concerned with political and social themes which have always been present to varying degrees in your work across different projects. With this in mind: how do you keep these consistent messages fresh in peoples’ minds without getting to the point where you’re rehashing something or beating people over the head with an ideology? Is it even possible?"

Tankian: "That’s a good question, actually – one of the best I’ve heard. I’m not exactly sure what the answer to that is. I think the way that I describe things either has a certain… for example, “Figure It Out” has a certain humorous kind of anecdote to it even though it’s a political song. I think that’s what makes the pill more easily swallow-able—swallowable."

[Laughter]

MS: "You invented a new word."

Tankian: "Yeah, right – swallowed. I think there are variations of themes — whether they’re ecological or philosophical — that are a little different than what I’ve done before with System and Elect the Dead. As people, we grow and mature. If right now I asked you to write a paragraph about music, it would be different than something you would have written six years ago and definitely twenty years ago.

"Serj Tankian - Harakiri..."

MS: "Very true; I wouldn’t have known much of anything 20 years ago."

[Laughter]

Tankian: "That’s what I mean – you’ve progressed."

MS: "Gotcha. I think Daron once said that one of the X factors for System of a Down’s roster was that “we don’t just do songs about politics, we also write songs about prostitution.”

Tankian: "Right. That’s not very different either."

MS: "Switching gears a little bit, you are going on tour this summer with System on a pretty awesome bill with the Deftones."

Tankian: "Yeah, I’m looking forward to it."

MS: "What inspired you guys to reunite just recently? What is it about right now that gave you the impetus to do this again?"

Tankian: "That’s a good question. I don’t know. It just felt right to get together and start playing. We had a blast when we did four different tours on four different continents last year – rather three last year and one this year. The shows have been really great, and I think we’re playing tighter than we ever have in our career. We’ve been having a blast with each other on stage. I guess it was the right time."

MS: "Have you had a chance to write yet with the guys again?"

Tankian: "No. System has not been writing."

MS: "Has your approach evolved or changed at all in playing or putting a live set together with them? Has the way that you interact together musically changed from where you were in the Mezmerize/Hypnotize era?"

Tankian: "I don’t really know. I don’t think so. I would say probably not. I think the reason we’re playing better is because over the years, everyone keeps playing their music to become better musicians. Not having played together, it’s exciting to play together and that excitement comes out in the music."

MS: "What can we expect set-wise? In terms of songs or anything else that can’t be categorized under the broad term “set list”?"

Tankian: "We haven’t started rehearsals for that tour yet, so I can’t really tell you. Whatever we end up putting on the set list usually ends up changing by the third show." [Laughs]

MS: "It’ll be a little different each time."

Tankian: "Yeah. It’ll surprise us. Once in a while Daron will start up a song and I’ll go “hmm, we haven’t rehearsed that in the last six years” and then we jump into it. It’s fun. We keep it exciting for ourselves."

Philip Anselmo Talks About 'Vulgar Display Of Power', DOWN IV & Solo Album!

Philip Anselmo is a non stop music machine. When he is not busy with his supergroup DOWN, he is taking care of business at Housecore Records (Anselmo's label). Somehow, he also has time to create NEW music via his various side projects. Recently,  Loudwire.com chatted with PANTERA's frontman to talk about the 20th anniversary reissue of 'Vulgar Display Of Power' (available now), as well as the new series of EP's by DOWN. He also broke the news about his NEW solo project. Here are some excerpts of the interview.

“We just finished an EP, yes,” Anselmo told Loudwire.” That is done. It’s mastered, done, finished. I’m waiting on Pepper [Keenan's] artwork so I can take a good look at that. We’ll be doing a short [tour] run … this month. 10 days out in tertiary markets, to get our sea legs under us, so we can be ready for touring this fall. Expect that record no later mid-summer or early, early, early fall at the f—ing latest.”

He acknowledged that reports on a series of DOWN EPs “is a bunch of talk and f—ing ideas. They are good ideas, nonetheless. DOWN, the way I describe it, it is a genre band. When you are in a genre band, there are rules. There are borders you cannot cross. You have to be true to the genre itself. It is a subgenre within a subgenre within a subgenre. Southern Black Sabbath slash doom slash a million different things but it’s really one thing. As for the EPs, the other material, we’ve spoken about, this, that, the other, but as far as sitting down and doing it, we only have one in the can.”

About his solo album: “My solo record is recorded and has one more mix to go,” he said. The project will be called, simply, Philip H. Anselmo, and the album title is ‘Walk Through Exits Only'. It is the most deadly motherf—ing thing I have done. I cannot wait for people to hear it. If you like what I do or what I have done, this might be on of your up and coming favorites. I found a guitar player that is just out of his mind. I’ve actually known him for a long time, as long as Dime. Dime gave his respect to him, as well, and he is a great, sweet guy.”

Down's NEW EP will feature the following songs in no particular order:

- 'Levitation'
- 'Witchtripper'
- 'The Misfortune Teller'
- 'The Curse Is A Lie'
- 'Open Coffins'
- 'This Work Is Timeless'

"'You're A Lie' is the second song I brought to the band in 2011 during the last tour," explains SLASH. "We worked on it at soundcheck somewhere, I can't remember where.
