Earlier this year, VH1 Classic's THAT METAL SHOW celebrated its 11th season on the air. By now you all know that the show hosted by Eddie Trunk, Don
Jamieson and Jim Florentine, is the ultimate television show when it comes to all things Hard Rock and Heavy Metal.
Tonight, at 8 PM (Eastern Time), VH1 Classic presents "That Metal Special" in celebration of National Metal Day and the 11 seasons of THAT METAL SHOW. Tune in, watch it, and keep supporting the boys so they can keep bringing us many more TMS episodes.
Just under two weeks ago, VH1 Classic began releasing a series of viewer polls that would ultimately determine what songs would separate themselves from the pack in America’s Hard 100. Over one million (!!!) votes were cast by you, THE FANS, to determine which songs deserved to be at the top of our list of the best Hard Rock and Heavy Metal songs of all-time. Wait a minute! Just over one million votes?! Totally kidding!
Now they have sorted through all of the votes, analyzed the numbers, and now they need your help again in determining the FINAL RANKINGS of America’s Hard 100.
They have come up with a list of 15 songs, 10 of which won their respective polls — a healthy round of applause for:
- Dream Theater‘s “Pull Me Under”
- Type O Negative‘s “Black No. 1”
- Bon Jovi‘s “Living On A Prayer”
- Cinderella‘s “Gypsy Road”
- Dio‘s “Holy Diver”
- Rush‘s “Limelight”
- Poison‘s “Nothin’ But A Good Time”
- Guns N’ Roses‘ “November Rain”
- Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads’ “Crazy Train”
- Black Sabbath‘s “Paranoid”
Here are 5 songs which they are deeming wildcards. Each of these wildcard songs reaped more votes than all the other non-poll winning songs, and might
have won their respective polls had they been placed among a different
group of songs:
- AC/DC‘s “Back In Black”
- Accept‘s “Balls To The Wall”
- Guns N’ Roses’ “Paradise City”
- Megadeth‘s “Sweating Bullets”
- Poison’s “Talk Dirty To Me”
So, with that said, this are the final 15 songs. The same rules apply this time around; vote early and often for as many of these 15 as you think are deserving, and you can always click Return To Poll to vote again. The polls will close on Tuesday, October 2 at 4 PM ET, and you’ll be able to tune in to watch America’s Hard 100 on VH1 Classic in November to see the final results.
Due to an overwhelming demand from Metal fans worldwide, Grammy-nominated and Juno award-winning Banger Films is setting out to raise funds to make what has become known as "The Lost Episode" a reality. 'Metal Evolution: Extreme Metal' "The Lost Episode" covers co-director Sam Dunn's favorite genres: Death Metal, Black Metal and Grindcore, and he is reaching out to Metal fans to help make it happen!
"Hundreds of fans have emailed us demanding, pleading, that we do this episode," says Banger Films co-founder Sam Dunn. "So in response we're launching an IndieGoGo campaign to raise funding within the Metal community to finance the episode. The goal is to raise $175,000 in 90 days!" The campaign kicked off Friday, September 14th. Details of the campaign, including cool donor gifts at various contribution levels can be found here: http://www.indiegogo.com/ExtremeMetal
We recently spoke with Dunn about "The Lost Episode". He thoroughly explained to us why Banger Films feels the need to produce this episode and all the steps involved in creating such a massive aggressive TV episode. He also explains why VH1 Classic didn't fund this particular episode. He also revealed to us some badass projects that they have coming up! Check it out, support Banger Films, and spread the word!

Originally broadcast on VH1 Classic (USA) and Much More Music (Canada), Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn's series Metal Evolution presented 11 episodes based on their "Heavy Metal Family Tree" originally shown in their groundbreaking documentary, Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. Host and metalhead-turned-anthropologist Sam Dunn crisscrossed the globe exploring the vast history of Heavy Metal across its 40+ year history, covering everything from the Pre-History of Metal and Shock Rock to Grunge and Thrash Metal. But one very important episode was left out: Extreme Metal. Perceived to be perhaps too niche or "extreme" to attract enough audience interest, the episode did not see the light of day, ironic considering it is Heavy Metal's most vibrant and fastest growing genre.
"For many fans, including myself, extreme metal is massively important. It continues to push metal forward, both sonically and aesthetically," says Sam. Alex Webster, co-founder/bass player of death metal legends Cannibal Corpse, agrees: "There's really no way that you could tell the complete story of heavy metal without including a chapter that covers extreme metal. And given their knowledge, experience, and passion for the genre of heavy metal, I think that Banger Films are the most qualified people to do it!"
Contributors' support will send Sam on a global journey from San Francisco and Tampa to the United Kingdom, Norway and Sweden to investigate the history, myths and intricacies of extreme metal. Sam will unravel the lineage between Extreme Metal's divergent branches - Death Metal, Grindcore and Black Metal - and meet with the sub-genre's most influential sonic architects, including members of Death, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, Napalm Death, Entombed, Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, Enslaved and many more. The result will be an unforgettable portrait of metal's most iconoclastic sub-genre.
Headbangers! It's day 3 of VH1 Classic’s America’s Hard 100 Countdown Poll! Keep voting for the best Hard Rock and Metal songs of all-time HERE!
If you don’t see your favorite bands or songs on today’s list, don’t fret! Be sure and check back daily at noon, as we’re going to be adding new songs for you to vote on each day!
