Guitarist & Manager Of THE DOORS Talk About Ray Manzarek!

As reported earlier this week, Ray Manzarek, founding member and keyboardist of THE DOORS, passed away at the age of 74 in Rosenheim, Germany from bile duct cancer. Here is the bands official statement.

His band-mate and guitarist Robby Krieger, reflected on how Manzarek took the chance of meeting with Jim Morrison at Venice Beach in 1965 and how this lead to the formation of the band.

Manzarek, who was born in Chicago, moved to Los Angeles to study film at UCLA. While at UCLA, he met Morrison on the Westwood campus during the singers short stint at college.

“[Manzarek] was the only one at UCLA who was smart enough to know that Jim Morrison wasn’t just a jerk, like a lot of people thought. To me, that make him a genius.” – Doors guitarist Robby Krieger
After Manzarek graduated in 1965, him and Morrison met again at Venice Beach and decided to start THE DOORS. This is when they added guitar player Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. Since the band lacked a bass player, Manzarek usually played the bass lines on his Fender Rhodes piano. Manzarek was the oldest in the band and occasionally sang as well.

“[Manzarek] was relentless in his pursuit of the vision. And you have to give Ray a lot of credit because he understood what Jim [Morrison] was and what was magic about Jim, and he just never backed down from that.” – Bill Siddons, former manager for The Doors

In lieu of flowers, please make a memoriam donation in Ray Manzarek's name at www.standup2cancer.org

Rock In Peace Mr. Manzarek, your music will surely live forever!

Ray Manzarek, Founding Member Of THE DOORS, Passes Away At The Age Of 74 - Statement Available!

We have some very sad news. Ray Manzarek, founding member and keyboardist of THE DOORS, has passed away at the age of 74 from
bile duct cancer. Here is the bands official statement:

"Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.

Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. The Doors went on to become one of the most controversial rock acts of the 1960s, selling more than 100-million albums worldwide, and receiving 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and five multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. alone. "L.A.Woman," "Break On Through to the Other Side," "The End," "Hello, I Love You," and "Light My Fire" were just some of the band's iconic and ground-breaking songs. After Morrison's death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors' guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.

"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," said Krieger. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."

Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manzarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo's wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

In lieu of flowers, please make a memoriam donation in Ray Manzarek's name at www.standup2cancer.org

Rock In Peace Mr. Manzarek, your music will surely live forever!

SYSTEM OF A DOWN Clear The Air Regarding Their Future!

Earlier today (May 20), SYSTEM OF A DOWN bassist Shavo Odadjian wrote about his and the fans frustration regarding the bands next steps (or lack of) because of Serj Tankian's lack of commitment to the band via a Facebook message. Read it HERE!

The band has just posted a collective statement in response to Shavo's post:

"Earlier today, Shavo posted a few statements on his personal Facebook page that do not reflect the sentiments of System Of A Down as a collective band. These were misleading statements that were made during a temporary state of bad judgment on his part alone. To be clear, the full band lineup of Serj, Daron, Shavo and John will be performing all scheduled tour dates. With respect to new SOAD music, although we have not agreed on a timetable for a new album, we all believe that having the four of us do it together is the way to be true to the band and our fans."
Don't forget that SYSTEM OF A DOWN will be performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, on July 29 and will be re living the history that made famous the band guided by Serj! The band will also be hitting Europe this Summer.

All of SOAD's tour dates can be seen here!

SYSTEM OF A DOWN To Continue Without Serj Tankian?!

It seems like the water is starting to spill within the SYSTEM OF A DOWN camp. While their global audience awaits for the bands next effort, singer Serj Tankian is busy supporting his third solo album entitled 'Harakiri' and is showing no interest in the future band.

Earlier today (May 20), his bassist Shavo Odadjian wrote about his and the fans frustration regarding the bands next steps (or lack of) via the following Facebook message:

"Ok..... Ill come clean.. Its not us (meaning Daron, John Or Shavo!!)... Its Serj, who doesn't want to do a new album!!!! So please stop harassing us about it!!! We are just waiting for SERJ! Now He might hate me for exposing the truth but I had too.. Sorry folks!!! We're trying to get a new album out, its just not passing Serj's RULES! Kinda funny, since we started the band and now he's holding us back!! I think we should should release another album again??? As for me.. I'm ready to release one with someone who wants to be the singer of SYSTEM. Not someone we have to beg to be a part of SYSTEM!! So with that in mind, what do you guys think we should do? Just remember, he's been holding us back for 7 years so far.. wanna wait another 4-5 years? Or shall we release a record without Serj? U tell us?????" Read the rest of his rant HERE!

Wow, SYSTEM OF A DOWN without Serj's signature vocals would be horrendous regardless of who would "replace" Serj. But then again, we do understand Shavo's frustration. As we mentioned above, he is just as frustrated as the rest of us who are patiently waiting for the bands next effort. So Serj, please get on it!

UPDATE: here is the bands collective statement regarding the future of the band!

Last year, Serj made it very clear that he is not ready to commit to SYSTEM OF A DOWN. This is what he had to say about the possibility of recording NEW music with the band:
"I think we have about four or five unreleased tracks that we finished before. We need to talk about what to do with them, etc. But I would be very open to releasing, like, a greatest-hits record with a few [previously] unreleased tracks. However, we haven't really discussed it, so I don't wanna make a promise."

SLAYER: Jeff Hanneman Memorial Celebration Announced!

The Jeff Hanneman Memorial Celebration will take place on Thursday, May 23 at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles from 3:30 - 7:30PM. Hanneman passed away on May 2 at the age of 49 (Details HERE).

The Memorial Celebration will be free and open to the public on a first-come, first-in basis (subject to venue capacity).  All ages are welcome, and paid parking will be available around the venue.

Jeff Hanneman helped shape Slayer's uncompromising thrash-metal sound as well as an entire genre of music.  His riffs of fury and punk-rock attitude were heard in the songs he wrote, including Slayer classics  "Angel of Death," "Raining Blood," "South of Heaven" and "War Ensemble."  Hanneman co-founded Slayer with fellow-guitarist Kerry King, bassist Tom Araya and drummer Dave Lombardo in Huntington Park, CA in 1981.  For more than 30 years, Hanneman was the band member who stayed out of the spotlight, rarely did interviews, amassed an impressive collection of World War II memorabilia, was with his wife Kathy for nearly three decades, shut off his phone and went incommunicado when he was home from tour, did not want to be on the road too late into any December as Christmas was his favorite holiday, and, from the time he was about 12 years old, woke up every, single day with one thing on his mind:  playing the guitar.

It was once suggested to Slayer that if they would write "just one mainstream song that could get on the radio," they would likely sell millions of records and change the commercial course of their career, similar to what had happened to Metallica with 1993's "Enter Sandman."  Jeff was the first to draw a line of integrity in the sand, replying, "We're going to make a Slayer record.  If you can get it on the radio, fine, if not, then fuck it."

Our condolences go out to Jeff's family, friends and the Slayer camp! Rock in Peace, Jeff!
