Is Your Music On iTunes? Find Out The Value Behind Having Your Music On Digital Music Platforms!

MACHINE HEAD's Robb Flynn recently stated how he doesn't purchase "physical music" anymore thanks to digital streaming. He also stated that he probably wont ever purchase "physical music" again. With him being a musician and a key player in Heavy Music, his comments caused a massive stir up from the purists out there who still believe that the music industry can return to what it used to be.  Here is Flynn's reaction to all the stir up, followed by some key recent data regarding iTunes (the #1 provider of non "physical music").

"Look, I'm in a band, I've lived on a bus/van/plane for well over 25 years of my life now. I live out of a suitcase, that resides on a tour bus, with 10 people (imagine a studio apartment on wheels, with 9 roommates) for 10 months out of a year at times. My life needs to be efficient, it needs to be compact, it needs to be portable. Sure, I used to carry a big-ass CD wallet everywhere with beer-soaked, scratched up CD's and it was a pain, so yeah, the Spotify / iTunes world fits me perfect.

"But, I also realize this isn't most people's life.

"Most people don't need the portability I do. Lot's of people said they love iTunes and streaming. Lot's of people said they would like a CD, and of course, for the time being we will continue to sell CD's. That's never been a question, as long as there are stores to stock CD's, we will sell CD's. And with Bandcamp.com and HDfiles.com offering CD quality and higher files, that's a cool thing the future is bringing to files. But also, as I'm sure as most of you know, stores to purchase CD's are getting harder and harder to find. HMV (the last UK based CD chain) just closed shop, FNAC and Virgin France just closed. Here in the US Best Buy has cut CD rack space down from 24 racks to 4 racks!

"I have a ritual I've done for every release since Burn My Eyes in 1994, where first day I go in and buy our album. Call it good luck or whatever, I love my rituals. But believe you me, I was stunned, STUNNED, when I went into Ameoba Records in Hollywood (I was in LA on the Jason Ellis show day of release) and saw our regular album NOT on sale, but full price for $16.99. I spent $40 bucks buying the 2 editions. It was wrong, it's supposed to be on sale the first week / first month. You reward the die-hards, reward the Head Cases for going out there and supporting you first day/week/month. It's a thank you. We were pissed and fans weren't stoked. Shit like this has to change, it has to, and we as a band (with your help) have to figure out a way around it."

The impact of iTunes:

Recently, Apple® announced that music fans have purchased and downloaded more than 25 billion songs from the iTunes Store® (www.itunes.com), the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store. The 25 billionth song, “Monkey Drums” (Goksel Vancin Remix) by Chase Buch, was purchased by Phillip Lüpke from Germany. As the downloader of the 25 billionth song, Phillip will received a €10,000 iTunes® Gift Card.
“We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past 10 years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “Averaging over 15,000 songs downloaded per minute, the iTunes Store connects music fans with their favorite artists, including global sensations like Adele and Coldplay and new artists like The Lumineers, on a scale we never imagined possible.”

“In a lot of ways, iTunes has leveled the playing field for musicians. Whether you’re unsigned, indie, major, whatever—it’s the place most people go to buy digital music,” said Wesley Schultz, guitarist and lead vocalist of The Lumineers. “iTunes doesn’t exclude any musicians simply because they’re not yet established or popular.”

The iTunes Store is the world’s most popular music store with a catalog of over 26 million songs and over 25 billion songs downloaded, and is available in 119 countries. The iTunes Store is the best way for iPhone®, iPad®, iPod®, Mac® and PC users to legally discover, purchase and download music online. All music on the iTunes Store comes in iTunes Plus®, Apple’s DRM-free format with high-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding for audio virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings. iTunes in the Cloud lets you download your previously purchased iTunes music to your devices at no additional cost, and new music purchases can be downloaded automatically to your iOS devices.

In our humble opinion, "physical music" still has a certain value to the music industry as a whole. However, with music stores closing their doors thanks to the digital era we are all part of, it is essential for musicians from all walks of life to upload their music to iTunes and other digital media sources. If you are reading this and you are a musician, make sure your music is on iTunes before uploading the content unto any other site. iTunes is the NEW Tower Records, the NEW Virgin Records, and will continue to be for many years to come.

Corey will co-author the book, which is described as "a no-holds-barred look inside of Philip's brain, his history with PANTERA, the loss of his best-friend, Dimebag Darrell, and an unflinching examination into the downward spiral of pain and drug addiction that nearly cost him his life." Full Metal Jackie Conducts Candid Interview With Philip Anselmo About The NEW DOWN & More!

This past weekend, DOWN's Philip Anselmo was the special guest on Full Metal Jackie’s radio show. Anselmo talked about the upcoming Down record: ‘Down IV Part I – The Purple EP’ as well as his own solo album, his own label Housecore Records and much more. Here is an entire transcript of the interview (courtesy of Loudwire.com)

The first in a series of four Down EPs that are going to be released in the next few years is going to be coming out in September.

And it still doesn’t have a name, I’m leavin’ it to ya’ll man. Call it whatever you want.

From my understanding, the way that you’re releasing this first EP, it’s called ‘Down IV Part I – The Purple EP’?

Okay fine, I’ll buy that.

Instead of an entire album, Down is releasing four EP’s in the next year and a half so Phil, not having to come up with 16 to 20 songs all at once, how did that change how the songs were written?

Well really it took a lot of pressure off of any and all of us. When this question comes up I refer to the first demo we did in 1992 when we all flew into Texas with this idea in our heads and we had really no idea what was going come out of it. I had no lyrics, everything was just right on the spot and I think we came out with ‘Bury Me in Smoke,’ ‘Temptation’s Wings’ and ‘Losing All,’ which would be on the first record.

We took this approach with this record and honestly I have never in my life taken so much pressure off of myself to do a record. We didn’t know what we were thinking and the fact that it is six songs, I think that commanded all of our attention at the time and really to do a 10 or 12 song record – there’s no room at this point in my career at all for what would be called filler. I don’t want any filler, I want the songs to be direct, I want them to be unique and I think we did pretty well with this EP.
You’ve had a pretty prolific career with eight plus bands.

What’s different about the satisfaction you get from DOWN compared to your other bands?

Well truth be told, Down to me is a genre band. No matter what has been created from Down, whatever slot all the experts want to slide us into, that’s all fine but really know at the end of the day that Down has a very hardcore following, a cult following so to speak. We made promises in the past that we would do records in this certain time span and then five years goes by in between every release so for people to get new Down music it’s important to that fanbase so we never, never, never want to let those folks Down as far as releasing new stuff. So am I answering the question right there, Jackie?

[Laughs] Yeah I think you have.

Really? I think I lost it somewhere.

Basically the question was, what’s different about the satisfaction you get from Down compared to all your other bands?

It’s pleasing this fanbase. I may play in a lot of different bands but do they have this fanbase? No they do not, those are more self-indulgent projects that I feel like doing. Not that I don’t feel like doing DOWN, that’s not what I’m saying, the thing is DOWN does have a hardcore following. Outside of two other bands I’ve been in, everything else has been a small fanbase and or just me enjoying myself. DOWN is an obligation.

Down is now on your Housecore label?

No it ain’t. No I wish it was. It should be, it really should but you know to each his own but what the f— you got to work with five different guys so it’s like being married to a bunch of sissies.

A few visits ago that I had a chance to spend some time with you, you were still having some issues with your back. All those years you were onstage with degenerative disc disease, it must have been agonizing. So now years after having surgery to repair the problem without the pain, how have you changed as a performer?

As a performer well I cannot be as particularly physical as I was in the past and yes it drives me f—in’ bananas and it’s frustrating. When you have this type of injury to your lower back which is really the center of your body, you’re always cognizant of it. I have titanium rods and screws and clamps in my back, if you were to ask me right now do I feel these foreign objects in my body? I would say “Absolutely yes I can.” There’s also conditioning of the mind and I like to call is a mental callus. It builds up over time, it’s harder and harder and you condition yourself to pain and honestly the more physicality, the more work put into it – I went through months and months of physical rehabilitation with a fantastic team right down the street and I still use those same stretching routines, core workouts today because it’s essential.

This might not sound like it’s part of this but it really is, the weather here in the Gulf Coast, in the Southern region right down here, when the pressure drops when weather becomes weather and becomes relevant, man I can have done nothing very special but the next day I’ll wake up and this weather has ascended upon us and it feel like I got in a car wreck the day before. So there’s good days and there’s bad days still. A lot more good days than bad days but once again it’s a conditioning thing and as far as performing onstage, I just have to be cognizant, I have to be strong, I have to be mentally focused and honestly I can’t hold back. When you hold back that’s when you f— up, you got to do what you got to do.

Let’s talk about your Housecore label for a moment, I know you have a lot of projects that you do on that label and one of the bands from your label, Warbeast, is going to be going out with DOWN in September.

So is Haarp, Haarp is coming out as well. Both bands have new stuff in the works and Haarp by God, their new record called ‘Husks’ is coming out the same friggin’ day as Down. Whoa, a bit of a scheduling mistake there by not by Housecore. I’ll say this, Haarp, the new record is crushing and it deserves attention, it deserves a listen from everybody but also with what’s going on with Warbeast at the same time I cannot deny that I’ve been working on a solo record for quite a while now. Really everything’s tracked all that needs to be done is the mixing.

I think the first order at hand between Warbeast and myself is that we’re doing a split both of us, two songs and it’s called ‘War of the Gargantuas.’ I giggle because it’s a nod towards the 1960’s film, a Japanese film called ‘War of the Gargantuas.’ It’s, as many things have been throughout, it’s sort of an inside joke between both bands and very much worth it for the old intestinal f—in’ fortitude.

Either way I picked two of the most straight on songs out of my solo stuff, the full length is pretty chaotic – sometime next year I would say March at the latest we’ll get some solo bulls— going your way. Other than that it’s Haarp first, Warbeast with the split, with myself then Warbeast the actual record. We’re mixing this record right now called ‘Destroy’ and it’s a thrash friggin’ masterpiece and we’re mixing that sucker right now then my solo record. So yes we’re busy, I’m going crazy over here.

Obviously you’ve put out music on the label you are on and you’ve sang on. What’s the benefit and what’s the downside to overseeing that part of releasing your own music?

Oh Geez. We talking specifically about the solo stuff?

Yeah or anything that you’re on, putting out a record on your own label that you happen to be singing on, on any of your projects.

I think with the solo record there’s always pressure. I’m not putting pressure on myself at all, once again because it is what it is. I’m not going to say it’s the savior of any friggin’ genre of music, I’m not going to pump it up to be more than what anyone could expect because it’s going to be dare I say a difficult listen for some people. Yes I do expect a lot of people to get it and dig it but at the same time it is not an easy listen. It is a minefield, it’s different and that’s all I can say. I’ll let everybody else be the judge of what is.

I think that’s great about what you do, you’re putting out what you want to put out artistically.

That’s the way it should be though. Jackie, you cannot please everybody, you know this like anybody else with good common sense knows you’re not gonna please everybody at what you do every time and no time. You’re going to have your supporters and detractors but such is the world and that’s what makes everything subjective. That’s what makes music so vast because there’s so many different styles.

If someone doesn’t enjoy the music that I make, so fine, that’s perfect. I am such dynamite close with great friends, people I’ve grown up with the entire life. Do I like their bands, no I don’t. I don’t like their bands and I’m not going to get specific but I think they know who they are. As people, as friends and as peers we get along fantastically, great relationships and I think that’s the big misconception with maybe a lot of fans out there. You don’t have to be a fan of someone’s music to love ‘em at all. I think that’s where brotherhood and comradery and humanity come into things.

You grow up and you get a little wiser and people should get along and I bring up all these things because Housecore Records, I like to get involved with the bands. I love the recording process, I love getting in close with the bands, I love working and I love producing. I love everything but mixing for God sakes but mixing is a process that you have to go through, it’s just one of those things. Housecore is a labor of love and that’s all there is to it. There ain’t know gettin’ rich over here Jackie, believe me. I’m as Alice in Chains once said “Down in a hole!”

Looking forward to a fall tour, it seems to be mostly on the East coast. Will there be anything beyond that?

I would expect so, yes. Like I said DOWN is an absolute obligation and if there’s a fan base then there must be shows, there has to be. This is one stretch and then I know after September we are going to Europe for a good part of October, have the rest of the year off. I’ve got my hands full with the releases with Housecore Warbeast and obviously Haarp in September and shortly thereafter the split. I know in January they’re talkin’ about more Down shows so I would be heavily surprised if we were not going up the other coast.

Make sure you listen to Full Metal Jackie HERE!

PHILIP ANSELMO Speaks The Truth About The Current State Of Heavy Music!

If there is one thing that Philip Anselmo has never ever done is bite his tongue. The controversial multifaceted ex-PANTERA and current DOWN frontman, recently spoke with The Boston Phoenix about the current state of Heavy Music and of course about the NEW DOWN album ''Down IV Part I – The Purple EP''. A few excerpts from the interview follow:

About producing bands and releasing records via Housecore Records (Anselmo's label):

"I love it. I love everything from the camaraderie, the studio work, pulling songs together, helping out — I hate mixing, but I love the end result," Anselmo says, checking in by phone from his home in the swamps of Louisiana. "It is important to me, it really is. I'm very interested in what the thinking bands are doing out there. I love the underground; I'm always looking for anything that is a breath of fresh air because it makes me feel young again and gives me that 'Holy shit, I just picked up Slayer's Hell Awaits record again.' It gives me that feeling, and it's probably good for the circulation."

The NEW DOWN:

"I put no pressure on myself for this Down record," Anselmo says. "I don't think any of us did. I did what we did when we recorded the first demo. I am never the guy that will sit back and say, 'Oh, we gotta break new ground!' and have all these gigantic expectations. I'm the biggest fucking pessimist in the entire world. Even when I was in Pantera, I didn't expect a fucking thing." More info about the NEW DOWN here!

PANTERA's legacy:

"We were very strong, in our strongest, strongest bodies," he says. "The injuries had not yet mounted in my skeleton, and . . . gosh man, we were so physical back then onstage. When we had recorded [1990's] Cowboys from Hell, we were playing a lot of those songs live in the Dallas–Fort Worth area, and I know that this has been said before, but the last song we wrote for Cowboys was 'Primal Concrete Sledge,' and if there was any song that there was a possible bridge or a sneak peek at what Vulgar Display of Power would be, it's definitely that song.""I miss the days, I long for the days, sometimes, and I miss Dimebag very, very much," Anselmo says. "There's a plethora of emotions, and to dwell on the past doesn't feel healthy for me and when I think about those days. It's not like I try to think of all the good stuff; it kind of comes naturally, especially Vulgar Display of Power and that whole touring cycle and the change in the audience and their perception of us. When we toured Cowboys from Hell, there was a very lukewarm if not awful response. But when you back it up with a record like Vulgar Display, that's when the tide did turn — rapidly, to say the fucking least. There were some extremely educational, memorable, cherishable times in my life.

"We used to fuck with all kinds of songs. Obviously we did that ridiculous version of 'Cat Scratch Fever' for some movie soundtrack [Detroit Rock City], that dickface Ted Nugent. Shit dude, we would kick into Kansas and all kinds of shit. What you said does ring a bell; I think it was something like 'Outta Love Again,' I wonder where that shit is. And here's another one for ya: I never did sing on the motherfucker, that old Phil Collins [he starts singing 'I Don't Care Anymore'], we did a version of that, and it's somewhere. But there really probably isn't any original material left, but cover tunes and shit like that. If there was the proper amount of digging, we could find all kinds of shit."

The current state of Heavy Music:

"Heavy Metal has always gotten the meathead rap, and you know, hey, honestly I haven't fucking helped. I've made more bad decisions than great decisions in my fucking life, and I regret a lot of things I've said onstage, a lot of actions I've done onstage, and a lot of trouble that I've got into, because all it does is bring bad publicity to heavy metal. It kind of makes us, heavy metallers, a sovereign state in a lot of ways. We might not get as much big-time praise from mainstream media, but let them call us meatheads, let them think we're ignorant, and let them keep writing awful music — and I'll keep calling it awful and we'll just be even at that."

DOWN Release NEW Single "Witchtripper" On iTunes - Crank It Now!

As previously reported, Metal forerunners DOWN will release 'Down IV Part I – The Purple EP', their first body of NEW material in five years, on September 18, 2012 via Down Records (Independent Label Group).

Last week, Rolling Stone made the exclusive announcement this week with the world premiere of first single “Witchtripper,” calling it a “typically aggressive Anselmo vocal against a twisting, grinding musical backdrop.” [listen HERE!]. Right now, you can legally download "Witchtripper" right HERE.

The six song EP is the first in a series of four EP’s planned for release over the next year. DOWN, which includes Philip Anselmo (Pantera) on vocals, Pepper Keenan (C.O.C.) on lead guitars, Kirk Windstein (Crowbar) on guitar, Jimmy Bowery (Eye Hate God) on drums, and Pat Bruders (Crowbar), the newest addition to the line-up, on bass, will kick off a string of tour dates on release day, beginning in Fort Worth, TX, and ending October 2 in Charlotte, NC.

Self-produced and recorded at Nodfertu’s Lair, located at Anselmo’s New Orleans home, 'Down IV Part I – The Purple EP' is undeniably the product of the iconic collective that is DOWN, whose members origins span from Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar, and Eyehategod. Staggering riffs, thunderous drums, and Anselmo's inimitable delivery crush and captivate over the course of the collection's six songs. It's dark. It's dangerous. It's decisive. It's DOWN at their best.

"I do believe that we have delivered a record that will be accepted and hopefully enjoyed by the DOWN horde—if you will,” says Anselmo. “If you're looking for a DOWN record, it's very pure and real."

Lyrically, the EP goes beyond just personal experiences, and explores themes that include the faith of mankind, the imperfection of mankind and cultural belief systems.

"DOWN gives me the platform to be poetic and paint imagery with lyrics,” says Anselmo. “That's the approach I took. They complement the music and create an ominous feeling. Ultimately, when people consume the words, it's always their interpretation that matters. I could be image-conscious though when I wrote. It's not so gut level or street. The darker shit is some of my favorite."

With an album sales history totaling over 725,000, these New Orleans natives are no strangers to success. Their legendary 1995 debut 'Nola' is certified platinum, while 'Down II: A Bustle In Your Hedgerow' [2002] and 'Down III: Over The Under' [2007] remain fan and critical successes. Count on The Purple EP to garner similar achievements!

EP 1 Track Listing:

    Levitation
    Witchtripper
    Open Coffins
    The Curse Is A Lie
    This Work Is Timeless
    Misfortune Teller

In case you didn't get the memo... legendary Heavy Metal singer Philip Anselmo (DOWN, ex-PANTERA) will be joining the Sirius XM Liquid Metal family. Anselmo will be hosting a weekly show where he will be playing his favorite Metal! The news was revealed during an interview that Jose Mangin conducted with Anselmo earlier today. Mangin twitted the following:

"WOW hope y'all just caught that! @PhilipAnselmoFA will be doing a weekly show on @SXMLiquidMetal on @SiriusXM where he plays his FAV Metal!"

THY WILL BE DONE Release NEW Single "You The Apathy Divine" On iTunes!

Rhode Island's THY WILL BE DONE recently completed work on a brand NEW EP that is slated for release later this summer. The band, renowned for their DIY approach, engineered the EP themselves and teamed up once again with acclaimed Metal producer Zeuss to mix their six brand NEW studio tracks. With influences and roots that harkens the listener back to Metal's glory days, and songs and arrangements that echo the voice of the oppressed and broken, the end result is a release that brings hope and far surpasses its predecessors, and in all aspects possesses the capabilities of cementing THY WILL BE DONE's position in the Metal world. More details, including title and release date will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Today the first single from the EP "You, The Apathy Divine" is available for purchase on iTunes. A direct link to purchase the single is located HERE.

Frontman J. Costa commented on the iTunes release of the first single from their forthcoming EP:

"With the overwhelmingly warm reception we received at Orion Fest and with the new single that was unveiled last week, it just seemed like it was the most natural thing to do. We were meeting some existing fans as well as new fans at Orion Fest who were asking when they could actually own some new music; it just made sense."

THY WILL BE DONE are headed to Japan for a co-headlining tour with Japanese crossover legends The Aggressive Dogs. The tour will kick off on June 29th in Kasihwa and runs through July 8th in Nagoya. A list of confirmed dates can be found below.

With this current line-up of J. Costa on vocals, Kurt Fraunfelter on rhythm guitar, Chris Drapeau on lead guitar, Brendan Misturado on bass and Jay Waterman on drums, a plethora of foreign and domestic performances, and literally hundreds of thousands of miles traveled, it appears that values and drive mixed with an old school Metal and Rock N' Roll upbringing have brought together a juggernaut of a band that's clearing a path with a working-class ideology.

THY WILL BE DONE represents another chapter in the evolution of heavy metal. Their 2012 dose blends the thrash and groove elements that offered some of the late eighties and early nineties most memorable bands and albums, and yes, there are even solos too. THY WILL BE DONE is poised and ready to continue the Heavy Metal lineage and illuminate a new generation with the ways of the old.

THY WILL BE DONE Tour Dates:
