Great news! MASTODON have confirmed the rumors that they are working on their sixth studio album, the follow up to 2011's 'The Hunter', via the following statement:
"For
those of you who are interested, Yes we have been VERY busy writing and
putting songs together for the next studio MASTODON album, we are down
at our space hammering out riffs that can be friends and working our
fingers to the bone to put out another great album. thank you to all
our loyal fans!!!!" - MASTODON
The band also recently recorded a track for "Monsters University", the prequel to the Disney/Pixar
movie Monsters Inc. scheduled for release on June 21, 2013. This will be the second time that the
band dwells into animated features. The band made an appearance in the

Our friends over at Metal Injection, reported yesterday that MASTODON are currently working on NEW music and what itmight sound like. Following their South American tour, the band is currently in writing mode and might hit the studio in January, it all depends on the bands touring plans for next year. This is what the bands guitarist Brent Hinds told MTV Hive about what the album might sound like:
"A lot of the stuff I’m writing is in open G-minor," he says, before explaining, "I’m playing a lot of slide guitar and just getting really Jimmy Page-y on the place and getting really eerie and Radioheadish and very spooky sounding." Right now, he thinks he has about three songs’ worth of material, "or it could be one gigantic one," he says straight-faced. "I haven’t made up my mind yet."
No matter what happens, though, Hinds says the wheels are in motion. "Those dudes are always working," he says of his bandmates. "There’s never really a shortage of music with Mastodon because all of us are working on something musically. I’m in good company. Just because they might stand in the middle of the stage or something, people might think, this is the leader, he must conduct everything, but we’re all the leaders. We spread the weight around."
Today the band posted the following Twit:
"Writing and recording a song for the new monster's inc. movie!!"
The status refers to Monsters University, the prequel to the Disney/Pixar movie Monsters Inc. scheduled for release on June 21, 2013. This means we'll definitely be hearing some NEW MASTODON next year, whither they enter the studio.

During Germany's legendary Heavy Metal Wacken Open Air Festival, MK Ondergrond met up with OPETH's Fredrik Akesson while he was nursing what sounded like an epic hangover! Probably due to drinking Germany's amazing beer and knocking back some Jägermeister.

On Saturday, May 12, the "Heritage Tour" came to an end at The Masquerade in Atlanta, Georgia. This very rocking tour, has already been dubbed as one of the best of the year thanks to the awesome musical display brought to thousands of fans by OPETH, MASTODON and GHOST. The "Heritage Tour" marked the first time these three titans of progressive and forward-thinking hard Rock and Heavy Metal hit the road together and it sure was one for the ages.

It's the first time these two titans of progressive and forward-thinking hard Rock have hit the road together and it's going to be one for the ages. About the tour, Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, in his trademark deadpan wit, stated, "We're touring North America together with Mastodon soon. Nice! One of the very few Metal bands of today that I genuinely like. Good people too! Ghost are coming with us as well, and they are one of the hottest NEW bands to come out of Sweden in recent years, and I dig them too. I sound like an old fart, don't I? Well, I am.”
He continued, "Yet, am I right in thinking that this tour, this line up, is pretty decent? Would you all agree? Not complete s---, is it? Hope to see y'all out there! What are we playing? Not sure yet, but considering the company, maybe we'll have to pull out the big guns from time to time. In order to keep up, I mean."
Opeth released 'Heritage' in September 2011, garnering critical acclaim from Rolling Stone ("a career record that reimagines prog as actual Rock N' Roll"), Pitchfork ("a pretty, well thought out collection"), AV Club ("wholly absorbing"), Decibel (which featured the band on the cover, in somewhat of a tradition for the band and the magazine), PopMatters ("Opeth still continues to make especially phenomenal music") and more.

Last week, we reported that there was a rumor going around that Mastodon, Opeth and Ghost might be teaming up for a U.S. tour in April. Today, we are stoked to inform you that Troy Sanders (Vocalist/Bassist of Mastodon) has confirmed that this historical tour will happen! When asked about Mastodon's plans for the immediate future, Sanders said, "We go to Australia take part in the Soundwave Festival, which is going to be lovely… Take a short break. Do a North American tour with Opeth and Ghost. And then take another break and come back over here for the European festival season."
As we previously mentioned, this tour makes total sense! Why? Well, Mastodon and Opeth are considered two of the most important bands within Progressive Metal, while Ghost has been picking a lot of steam lately and a tour with Mastodon and Opeth would get them in front of thousands of fans that haven't been able to experience this amazing Swedish melodic Metal band out.
Additionally, Mastodon and Opeth released NEW albums last year around the same time in September of last year, so they are both within a similar tour cycle since they need to promote the hell out of their NEW relases.
