This week marks the fifteenth anniversary of Van Halen 'III', the only Van Halen album with Gary Cherone at the vocal helm. The album was released in the U.S. on 03/17/98 and in Japan about a week earlier. It was certified gold on 08/19/98. Over 550,000 copies have been sold in the U.S.
The cover was picked by Alex, who considered it extremely funny. Mike Post was picked by Gary to produce the album. He was brought in to oversee recording in April 1997, and on 09/30/97 the album was done.
Eddie used dozens of guitars on this album, testing hundreds of ways to record them. He also tried out his new 5150 II prototype amps for the album.
Track listing:
- Neworld
- Without You
- One I Want
- From Afar
- Dirty Water Dog
- Once
- Fire in the Hole
- Josephina
- Year to the Day
- Primary
- Ballot or the Bullet
- How Many Say I
'III' is the only Van Halen album in which a fully recorded unreleased song leaked to the public. In the months following the album’s release, some advance copies of the album leaked to the public and are now in the hands of collectors. These discs, which were made for Warner Bros personnel only, were identical to the released version except for one thing: the track “Josephina” was missing, and in it’s place was the unreleased song ”That’s Why I Love You”.
You can listen to the previously unreleased song here:

Blast From The Past: Eddie Van Halen Performing “Beat It” Live With Michael Jackson!
Eddie Van Halen recently spoke to CNN about the guitar solo he contributed to Michael Jackson’s”Beat It”, released 30 years ago.
Eddie and Michael have only performed the song together once. This historic event happened July 14, 1984 during The Jacksons ”Victory Tour” concert in Dallas, Texas. Here’s video of the unrehearsed performance (this video’s quality is so-so, but still is a big improvement over the crappy version most people have seen) and all the known photos from the concert.
As previously reported, Eddie Van Halen underwent an emergency surgery for a severe bout of diverticulitis. No further surgeries are needed and a full recovery is expected within four - six months. The long hospital stay of 3 weeks was required because surgery to remove the infected intestine resulted in another infection when Van Halen popped a few stitches.

Diverticulosis happens when pouches (diverticula) form in the wall of the colon. If these pouches get inflamed or infected, it is called diverticulitis. Diverticulitis can be very painful. (Source: WebMD). We wish Eddie a speedy recovery!

Who says there is no money in the music industry? VAN HALEN has grossed millions of dollars this year!
According to "Pollstar’s Mid-Year Charts & Figures", VAN HALEN is the second highest grossing band (and third highest grossing act, overall) in North America during the first half of 2012! Here are the stats:
- Van Halen played 49 shows in 47 cities.
- Average number of tickets sold per show: 9,513
- Average ticket price: $100.11
- Total number of tickets sold: 448,506
- Average gate per show: $955,319
- Tour gross: $44,900,000
Lower ticket prices, a drop in the number of tickets sold and Cirque du Soleil are all factors in Pollstar’s Mid-Year Analysis.
The top-grossing act during the first six months of 2012 wasn’t a band or an artist with a mega-selling album. Instead it’s Cirque du Soleil – “Michael Jackson: The Immortal,” which played 95 shows in 46 cities and sold 703,793 tickets for a total gross of $78.5 million.
Other acts among the top five on Pollstar’s Top 100 N.A. Tours are:
1) Roger Waters with the former Pink Floydian selling 575,444 tickets for a final gross of$61.9 million
2) Van Halen’s 448,506 tickets sold resulting in a final gross of $44.9 million
3) Kenny Chesney selling 386,969 tickets and grossing $33.9 million
4) Lady Antebellum’s 708,715 tickets sold giving the group a $30.9 million
Crunching the numbers, the intrepid mathematical geniuses in Pollstar’s Boxoffice Department determined that the Top 100 Tours in North America generated a combined gross of $1,125.9 million, up 1.2 percent over last year.
