As reported earlier this week, Ray Manzarek, founding member and keyboardist of THE DOORS, passed away at the age of 74 in Rosenheim, Germany from bile duct cancer. Here is the bands official statement.
His band-mate and guitarist Robby Krieger, reflected on how Manzarek took the chance of meeting with Jim Morrison at Venice Beach in 1965 and how this lead to the formation of the band.
Manzarek, who was born in Chicago, moved to Los Angeles to study film at UCLA. While at UCLA, he met Morrison on the Westwood campus during the singers short stint at college.
“[Manzarek] was the only one at UCLA who was smart enough to know that Jim Morrison wasn’t just a jerk, like a lot of people thought. To me, that make him a genius.” – Doors guitarist Robby Krieger
After Manzarek graduated in 1965, him and Morrison met again at Venice Beach and decided to start THE DOORS. This is when they added guitar player Robby Krieger and drummer John Densmore. Since the band lacked a bass player, Manzarek usually played the bass lines on his Fender Rhodes piano. Manzarek was the oldest in the band and occasionally sang as well.

"Ray Manzarek, keyboardist and founding member of The Doors, passed away today at 12:31PM PT at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany after a lengthy battle with bile duct cancer. He was 74. At the time of his passing, he was surrounded by his wife Dorothy Manzarek, and his brothers Rick and James Manczarek.
Manzarek is best known for his work with The Doors who formed in 1965 when Manzarek had a chance encounter on Venice Beach with poet Jim Morrison. The Doors went on to become one of the most controversial rock acts of the 1960s, selling more than 100-million albums worldwide, and receiving 19 Gold, 14 Platinum and five multi-Platinum albums in the U.S. alone. "L.A.Woman," "Break On Through to the Other Side," "The End," "Hello, I Love You," and "Light My Fire" were just some of the band's iconic and ground-breaking songs. After Morrison's death in 1971, Manzarek went on to become a best-selling author, and a Grammy-nominated recording artist in his own right. In 2002, he revitalized his touring career with Doors' guitarist and long-time collaborator, Robby Krieger.
"I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek today," said Krieger. "I'm just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him."
Manzarek is survived by his wife Dorothy, brothers Rick and James Manzarek, son Pablo Manzarek, Pablo's wife Sharmin and their three children Noah, Apollo and Camille. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family asks that their privacy be respected at this difficult time."

We have some terrible breaking news: Slayer guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman died earlier today of liver failure. He was 49. The band's longtime publicist issued the following statement today: "Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. He was 49. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed." Hanneman co-founded the thrash metal greats with Kerry King in 1981; their breakthrough came in 1986 with the landmark album "Reign in Blood." Hanneman wrote or co-wrote the set's standout tracks, "Angel of Death" and "Raining Blood." Our condolences go out to Jeff's family, friends and the Slayer camp! Rock in Peace, Jeff!
We have some very sad news. Slawek "Mortifier" Archangielskij passed away last night from heart failure. The bassist of the Polish Heavy Metal band HATE was found dead in Munchberg, Germany. Our condolences go out to Slawek's family, friends, band mates and fans. Rock In Peace, Slawek! A statement from the band follows: "[During the] night [of] April 5-6 near the German town of Munchberg, our friend, best comrade and longtime bass player unexpectedly passed away. After the show in Stuttgart last night, he went to sleep and never woke up. We found him lifeless early in the morning and immediately called an ambulance. He was reanimated, but to no avail. Results of Slawek's autopsy should be known soon. In this situation, we decided to cancel the remaining shows and return home. We gave detailed testimonies to the German police. With heavy hearts, we regret to inform you that Phil Ramone has passed away at the age of 72. Our condolences go out to Mr. Ramone's family, friends and all the artists that he was associated with. According to Billboard, Ramone had been hospitalized in late February with an aeortic aneurysm and died at New York Presbyterian Hospital earlier today.
Mr. Ramone, also known as "the Pope of Pop",worked with some of music's finest artists likeBob Dylan, Paul Simon, Ray Charles and Billy Joel.
Ramone was born in South Africa in 1941 and he began playing the violin and piano when he was three years old. He came to New York City as a teenager to study violin at the Juliard School, but soon developed an interest and talent in the technical details of recording. He began working as a songwriter at the Brill Building, which brought him into contact with music-industry legends like Quincy Jones, Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, and in 1959 he launched the A&R Recording studios.
"Our industry has lost an immense talent and a true visionary and genius," Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, said in a statement. "Everyone who encountered Phil came away a better person for it, professionally and personally." Ramone was nominated for 33 Grammy awards, winning 14 awards and a technical Grammy for a lifetime of innovative contributions to the recording industry. What a career!

Today is a sad day for the the drummers of the world! Mr. Robert Zildjian, the founder of Sabian Cymbals, has passed away at the age of 89. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and everyone at Sabian and Zildjian cymbals. Here is a message from the staff over at Sabian cymbals regarding the passing of Mr. Zildjian: "It is with deep, deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Robert "RZ" Zildjian,
our beloved founder and leader. A tireless and dynamic force within the drum industry,
he inspired each one of us in the Sabian family to work harder, to reach farther,
to make a difference - and he led us by example.
"His professional story is well known. Having been dealt a major career
setback at an age where most men would have opted for retirement, RZ
instead chose to re-invent the cymbal business with his own hand-crafted brand, a brand that would forever
change the face and sound of popular music. With his bare hands he shaped
the Sabian cymbal brand into his life's story - and by extension we became his family.
"We mourn his passing, and he will be forever in our hearts. But

Mr. Zildjian belonged to the Zildjian family, which brought the technology of cymbal making from their ancestral homeland in capital city of modern Turkey to the United States by Avedis Zildjian and then was passed on to future generations of the family members.
The company was founded in 1981 in Meductic, New Brunswick, Canada by Robert Zildjian, son of Avedis Zildjian III, the head of the Avedis Zildjian Company. Family tradition had it that the head of the company would only pass its secrets down to the oldest son, but Avedis III gave the information to both his sons, Armand and Robert. A family feud resulted in Robert leaving Zildjian to form the rival Sabian Cymbals company. The companies continue to be rivals, and are both among the world's most popular cymbal brands. Sabian cymbals have been used by many famous drummers in the world. The company's name is a combination of his three children, Sally, Bill, and Andy. As previously reported HERE,former IRON MAIDEN drummer Clive Burr passed away this past Tuesday, March 12, after battling with Multiple Sclerosis (M.S.) for many years. He will now rock in peace up in the sky!
Major bummer! IRON MAIDEN have confirmed the death of their former drummer Clive Burr. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, fans, and everyone at the MAIDEN camp. A statement from MAIDEN follows:
"We are deeply saddened to report that Clive Burr passed away last
night. He had suffered poor health for many years after being diagnosed
with Multiple Sclerosis and died peacefully in his sleep at home.
Steve Harris said “This is terribly sad news. Clive was a very old
friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer
who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we
were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those
around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi
and family at this time."
Bruce Dickinson adds “I first met
Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great
guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the
darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or
irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with
Mimi and the family”
As Maiden fans all know, Clive joined
Maiden in 1979 and performed on the first three albums Iron Maiden
(1980), Killers (1981) and The Number Of The Beast (1982).
Prior to that he was a member of Samson, the band Bruce fronted before he too joined Maiden."

One year ago, the New York City Heavy Music scene lost a man that literally bled for the underground music scene! Steve Ventura (A.K.A. Evil Steve) was not only a devoted fan and supporter of all things related to the local music scene (he introduced us to a handful of bands), but he thankfully also captured the essence of this ever-growing scene through the lens of his camera! One thing that will always be very inspiring about Steve is how after working all types of jobs for so many years so he could help raise his children, he decided to go back to school and follow his passion of becoming a professional photographer. Unfortunately but rightfully, his plans changed after his father passed away and he took it upon himself to take care of his elderly mother who became very fragile after the death of Mr. Ventura. We will never forget how Steve jumped on board the Horns Up Rocks crazy train without expecting anything in return! He did it because he believed in us and we believed in his immense talent. We had many conversations with Steve and reassured him that we'd wait for him to be ready to jump back on board, because we respected his priorities as the wonderful son that he was. While Steve might have made some mistakes in his past, just like most of us have. He is not remembered because of the errors he committed... today he is remembered for his huge heart and perseverance. If there is one thing that everyone can learn from him, is that life is too short to waste it away! Follow your passion and don't let anyone slow you down. And if they do, just give them the middle finger!

According to Soundsblog.it, guitarist Claudio Leo died this morning after struggling with an undisclosed "serious disease." The exact cause of death has not yet been revealed. Claudio was a former member of LACUNA COIL and was currently part of CAYNE.

"It's with deep sadness that I inform you all know that our dear friend and ex guitar player Claudio Leo left us.

"It is with great sorrow that we say good bye to one of our own tonight - He was a little brother to us all, a hard working and loyal young man who unfortunately had his life cut short. I can't thank him enough for all is help over the years - He was not just our Merch guy. He handled many duties and was helpful with many aspects of our "business". His input creatively with merchandising was always welcomed and greatly appreciated. On the personal side - we broke bread more times than I can count and shared many tales and good times. According to Blabbermouth.net, the surviving members of SUICIDE SILENCE will play a special show on December 21 at the Fox theater in Pomona, California as a tribute to their late singer, Mitch Lucker. All proceeds from the event will
go towards the education of Mitch's five-year-old daughter, Kenadee Lucker. The concert announcement was made last night (Saturday, November 24) during the sixth annual California Metalfest at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California.
Speaking to the audience, SUICIDE SILENCE guitarist Mark Heylmun said (see video below), "We fucking lost our brother; I'm sure you all know that. We all miss him more than anything in the fucking world."
He continued, "I think something that is really important to us is that we consider SUICIDE SILENCE a family — as far as the band goes, as far as any crew member we've ever had, anybody that's ever worked for us, and the fans… Everyone is family; that is the greatest thing that's ever happened to us and we're so grateful to be a part of this.
"This is the most difficult thing we've ever had to deal with.; I really don't know where to start. We're just dealing with it day by day, and I hope everybody else is dealing with it. It's just unreal to have to be up here right now talking about this.
"We wanna say thank you all so much for donating to Kenadee's education fund.
"Everybody's been asking what we're gonna do as a band. We're putting together a show. It's gonna be at Fox Theater on December 21. Just kind of the best show, the best event that you could possibly imagine. Obviously, Mitch is not gonna be there. We're gonna have a different singer every single song. We're gonna put the best show that we possibly can together. It's already in the works. Tickets go on sale next Friday. Hopefully everybody can make it out. It's gonna be really fucking special. And all the money that is going towards the show is going to Kenadee's educational fund. So it's going to a cause and Mitch would really appreciate it and we appreciate it. Thank you very much."

As previously reported HERE, Mitch Lucker, vocalist of SUICIDE SILENCE, passed away yesterday due to injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident. A speech by Mitch’s wife Jolie filmed during last nights vigil in Huntington Beach, California confirms what some Los Angeles news outlets reported last night, which is that Mitch had been drinking prior to the accident that killed him. Here is what Jolie said during the vigil:
"He was an alcoholic, and it’s been a big battle. I tried to stop him. I was in front of him begging him not to leave the house. Begging him. Like,”Just seriously, for us, don’t leave.” And he did. And this is what happened. It’s a wake up call. He was an amazing man, a wonderful father, and a great husband. And now he’s gonna miss out on watching Kenadee grow because he decided to drink and drive. Just don’t, just think before you guys do something stupid, please learn from it. Please."

It is with great sadness and regret that we have to report that Mitch Lucker, vocalist of SUICIDE SILENCE, passed away a few hours ago due to injuries sustained during a motorcycle accident.
The Orange County coroner’s office said Lucker was pronounced dead at 6:17 a.m. Thursday at UCI Medical Center in Orange County.
Coroner’s officials said Lucker was hospitalized after a motorcycle accident shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday. Huntington Beach police were investigating the crash and expected to release details Thursday morning.
We would like to offer our condolences to his family, friends, band members, fans worldwide, and everyone at Nuclear Blast Records and Century Media Records, who are affected by this loss.
He left us doing what he loved to do most (apart from music). He had just turned 28 years old and will be sorely missed.
