As we all know, New Jersey was heavily hit by Hurricane Sandy. Yesterday we announced that the Starland Ballroom will be shut down until Spring of 2013 due to the amount of damage that the venue suffered (details HERE). Thankfully, the people of New Jersey are coming together and helping each other out.
Yesterday (November 30), 89.5FM WSOU joined the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts and hosted a radio-thon in order to collect donations. The station has announced that they have surpassed their monetary goal:
"We hit our goal of $8950! In fact, WE PASSED IT AND RAISED OVER $9400 FOR HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF! THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH FOR DONATING AND THANKS TO EVERYONE INVOLVED. WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH"

Joining the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts is 89.5FM WSOU, who will be hosting a radio-thon in order to collect donations. The radio-thon will take place TOMORROW (Friday, November 30th). It will kick off at 6AM and will run until midnight. They will be DJing regular rotation music and will be taking breaks to ask for donations. Listeners will be able to call up and pledge various amounts of money. If a listener pledges $25+, he/she will be mailed a WSOU prize pack (contains WSOU stickers, pens, bottle openers and a random CD). If the pledge amount is $50+ the listener will receive a special Hurricane Sandy relief t-shift they are making specifically for the occasion and the prize pack as well.
If the donation is $100+ the listener will receive a WSOU Hoodie, the shirt, and the prize pack. They will also be running raffles all day. Raffle tickets can be purchased separately at $25 each. Some of the prizes being raffled are a signed Slipknot poster (includes Paul Gray), a 3 Inches of Blood snowboard and a framed drum head signed by all members of Five Finger Death Punch. There are also many other signed pieces of memorabilia to be given away. Their goal is to raise $8950 by the end of the day. They will also have a slew of guest DJs throughout the day.

"Honey From a Knife," the lead- off track from The Cult's critically-acclaimed NEW studio album 'Choice of Weapon', hits radio this week. The song, rooted in the seductiveness of addiction, has been singled out in numerous media reviews for its raw energy, sexual rhythms, Duffy's knife-edge guitars and Astbury's impassioned vocals, all woven around the song's mesmerizing chorus, "We got the drugs, the drugs in here."
As one reviewer put it, "'Honey From a Knife' is pure rock and roll, as catchy as it is shocking."
"Honey From a Knife" will also be available as a ringtone via all carriers in the U.S beginning Tuesday, June 26.
'Choice of Weapon', released May 22, has received stellar press reviews, the consensus being that it is The Cult's best album in years. The UK's Mojo gave it a Five Star review, Entertainment Weekly tagged it with an A-, Magnet said it was "as epic and compelling as nearly anything in The Cult's catalogue," The UK's Q magazine called it "brilliant," the Phoenix New Times wrote "everything clicks," and MSN stated simply that it was "their best album in 20 years."
The Cult's recent live performances also created a stir with the Hollywood Reporter who observed the band live in New York as having "returned with a vengeance," and referring to Astbury as "a menacing tyrant of cool." The band - Ian Astbury/vocals, Billy Duffy/guitars, Chris Wyse/bass, John Tempesta/drums - completed its initial assault on the U.S.A. at the Los Angeles Palladium this past Saturday with alt/rockers Against Me! in support. The Cult heads to Europe later this week for a three-week tour of headlining dates and festivals where the band will share stages with Patti Smith, Garbage, Wolf Mother, and Jack White, among others.
Critically-acclaimed, Richard Christy-led Metal act, Charred Walls of the Damned, has recently confirmed a slot on one of the biggest music festivals of 2012: "Orion Music and More Fest". The fest, which will be held at Bader Field in Atlantic City, NJ on June 23rd and 24th, will feature dozens of bands as well as a Billabong All Out Air Assault Surfing Expedition, Custom Car + Motorcycle Show, and much more. Charred Walls of the Damned's second album, 'Cold Winds on Timeless Days', was released on October 11, 2011. The album, much like its self-titled predecessor, received heaps of praise from fans and press.
Richard Christy of Charred Walls of the Damned has been hinting at a NEW video since November 2011, when the trailer was released. "Zerospan" was directed and edited by Mike Schiff (Charred Wall's previous 'Ghost Town' video) and Sean McEwen (Albino Farm) with special effects/make up by Brian Spears and Pete Gerner from G and S Effects (Stakeland). The lead actor in the video is Bryan Haeffele.
Richard Christy elaborates on the video's concept:
"I'm so excited that fans will finally be able to see the "Zerospan" video after many months of hard work! For fans of horror like myself, this video is the perfect mix of technological horror and all out brutality. The "Zerospan" video is like a mini horror film and the story follows the lyrical subject matter perfectly and creates a haunting vision of a man absorbed by the world's ever growing technology. What it comes down to, though, is that it's pretty much just a kick ass Heavy Metal video! Big thanks to Mike, Sean, Brian, Pete, Bryan, Metal Blade, and everyone who helped make this video awesome!"
When most people hear the name Richard Christy, they immediately think of the stunt guy from the Howard Stern Show on Sirius Satellite Radio. For us Metaleros, Richard Christy is synonymous to Heavy Metal drumming. Believe it or not, Richard has been a professional Heavy Metal drummer since 1995. In this time span, he has played in legendary bands like Death and Iced Earth, and in 2009 he formed Charred Walls of the Damned with Tim "Ripper" Owens.
Anyone who has met Richard Christy knows that not only is he very talented, but also a gentleman in every sense of the word. This might be hard to grasp after hearing and seeing his stunts on the Howard Stern Show, but it is all just a show. One thing that is evident, is that the same passion that took Richard to Heavy Metal heaven (or hell), also took him to radio elite. After all, being a drummer in a Heavy Metal band and working on the best radio show in history take a lot of discipline, passion and perseverance.
On Tuesday, October 11, Richard Christy took over Idle Hands Bar in New York City and presented to the world Charred Walls of the Damned's second studio album entitled "Cold Winds on Timeless Days" (out now via Metal Blade Records). During the event we were able to steal Richard away from his fans, to chat about this epic new release, as well as his career in radio. We also discussed his relationship with the late great Chuck Shuldiner from the legendary Heavy Metal band Death. This is what went down!
With 12 songs clocking in at 58 minutes, fans are getting a lot more music this time around. Recording twelve songs in a short amount of time is no easy feat, but one that was accomplished because of the stellar talents in the band. Christy elaborates further; "I wanted to get a natural sound out of this album, I wanted everyone to be well rehearsed, not that I wanted the album to be rushed, but I wanted the spontaneous live feel and not over think anything too much." Richard Christy describes Cold Winds on Timeless Days as a "perfect storm of producing". Audiohammer's Jason Suecof produced and Mark Lewis mixed, while mastering was handled by Alan Douches at West Westside.

When we were planning our end of the year recap, we had a full bag of ideas. However, the last thing we wanted to do was to use old content, simply because this is the formula that most media outlets use. Luckily, we were able to create exactly what we think you deserve. We truly believe that this is the best recap you will see when it comes to Heavy Metal in 2010.
Here at Horns Up Rocks we've been very lucky to be at the right place, at the right time. As a matter of fact, the majority of our content was gathered with a simple formula: connect with the artist, be honest with the artist, and never script the interviews.
