On October 18th, Skateboard Marketing Ltd, ReverbNation and Horns Up Rocks teamed up and hosted a CMJ convention showcase at Webster Hall in New York City. The event featured a surprise acoustic set by Geoff Tate (ex-Queensrÿche) and performances by KILLCODE, FREYA and SLAM ONE DOWN.
Right after the event was done, we had the chance to chat with Munsey Ricci (Skateboard Marketing Ltd) and Karl Buechner (FREYA & EARTH CRISIS) about the 21st anniversary of Skateboard Marketing Ltd, the showcase itself, and music in general. We also discussed animal rights, straightedge life, the future of FREYA and of course, EARTH CRISIS. Without further due, here is out interview with Munsey and Karl. Enjoy!

Meet The Bands That Will Be Performing This Week At "The Underground MeTal Friday's Series"!
Today more than ever before, it is essential for promoters, artists and fans to keep the pulse of Heavy Music (the underground scene) alive and kicking! Ever since the inception of Horns Up Rocks, we have been actively involved in strengthening the underground Heavy Music scene. While many understand the importance of supporting the local artists and venues, there are still too many who are forgetting how essential it is to keep underground music breathing!
In an unprecedented move in the tri-state area music scene, we are bringing you 3 underground MeTal shows in 3 borough's (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens) on 1 weekend with over 15 bands! Here is what we have cooked to perfection for your ear buds to indulge in!
The "Underground MeTal Friday's" (Presented by Horns Up Rocks), returns this Friday June 15th to Fontanas Bar in New York City! This time around we don't only have 5 excellent bands, but we will also be celebrating a bunch of birthday's! There is no reason why you should miss this EPIC event, so we hope to see you there.
Meet the bands that will be performing:
- DESOLATE:
DESOLATE has created a brutal collection of songs over the years and is unleashing them through their current lineup of permanent members: Abe Rivera (vocals), Jeff Martinez (guitars) Jessica Pimentel (bass) and a cast of Desolate "All-Stars" that include Nick Serr and Earl Maneein from RESOLUTION 15, Roach McPoach from SLAM ONE DOWN, Angel Cotte from ALEKHINE'S GUN and John Tyler (DEMILITIA). DESOLATE has since gone on to refine their musical styling while maintaining their original identity. Come see them live and bring your cowbell!
- LIES BENEATH:
LIES BENEATH is a five-piece Metal band with influences ranging from Thrash, to Death Metal and Hardcore. With classic dual-guitar attack, a crushing rhythm section, dynamic vocals and brooding soundscapes, this band creates an undeniable presence and demands captivation from any audience. Their 2011 Full-Length Release 'Death Of The American Dream' is available now on Spotify, iTunes, CD Baby & more. Lies Beneath is reason enough to come to this show!
- SLAM ONE DOWN:
SLAM ONE DOWN originated back in 2005 when J.R. started coming up with the riffs and song ideas that are on their demo today. The riffs followed J.R. through three different bands and it was not until he met singer Bobby Brazen that solidified the style that you hear today. Bobby and J.R. decided to start a NEW Heavy Metal project based on a musical vision that incorporated every style of Metal influenced by all the great bands that preceded them. Come party with the hardest drinking band of all the tri state area!
- BEYOND DISHONOR:
If you are not having fun, the crowd isn’t having fun—this sums up the philosophy of Beyond Dishonor. Comprised of five members with very disparate influences, styles and quirks, this stalwart of the resurgent New Jersey Metal scene combines all of those myriad differences between them and, somehow, creates music that is brutal and aggressive enough for the most Hardcore of fans and yet groovy enough to be accessible to those on the fringe. Get to the show early to check this phenomenal band out!
- JULIUS SEIZURE:
New Jersey act Julius Seizure is a force to be reckoned with in the tri state area Heavy Music scene and beyond! After releasing their debut EP on May 15th, 2012, the band is ready to kick off their "Gladia-tour" this Friday at 8 PM sharp! Be there!
Spread the word and we hope to see YOU this Friday at Fontanas Bar in New York City! \m/

NY Metallers SLAM ONE DOWN Need YOUR Help - EPIC Rewards Available!
For the past 3 years, SLAM ONE DOWN has worked long and hard to create the music you’ll hear on their first full length album: 'Who Really Wants to Live Forever'. These are the anthems they’ve performed all over the Tri-state area; the songs that hundreds of necks have banged to and funneled beers with.
Since day one, the SLAM ONE DOWN boys have poured out energy and passion into being the best and heaviest band they can be. And now, with the debut of their full-length album, they’re asking for your help in making their dreams a reality. By donating to their Kickstarter campaign, you’ll help fund cost of the production of the record; the printing of the CDs in hard-copy format; the radio marketing campaign that will get their music played all over the United States and beyond; the production of the merchandise that goes along with the record; and their very first music video. You’ll play a major role in making SLAM ONE DOWN a force to be reckoned with, all over the world!

Tommy Vext & Marc Rizzo Deliver The Madness At 'A Holiday Tribute Show For Dimebag Darrell Abbott'!
This past Saturday, December 10th, Horns Up Rocks hosted the first ever Dimebag Darrell tribute to take place in New York City. The event was appropriately titled 'A Holiday Tribute Show For Dimebag Darrell Abbott' and it featured heavy hitters Marc Rizzo (Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy), and Tommy Vext (ex-Divine Heresy and Snot), among others. Although the entire event was a complete success, the highlight of the night is when Vext joined Rizzo in a stellar cover of Pantera's "Mouth For War".
Another highlight of the night, was when ShitKill opened the show with an infusion of furious Thrash Metal. We absolutely believe that these young band (all of the members are still in High School) is the New Blood of New York Metal! Not only did ShitKill perform a handful of kickass original songs, but they paid tribute to the pink beard in the sky by performing a flawless cover of Pantera's "Sandblasted Skin".
Following ShitKill, were Delaware Metallers World Lost, who never disappoint and are always ready to party! The NEW songs out of their latest album entitled 'Empowered' came across clearly and dangerous, they also made sure that everyone's neck's were ready for BorgoPass. These Long Island natives always deliver the goods, and this time around they even added Black Sabbath's anthemic song "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" to their extensive musical repertoir.
Just when the crowd hit a drunken climax, the Marc Rizzo band got on stage and delivered the goods. There is no question that Rizzo is one of the most talented guitarists of our generation. As we mentioned before, this time around Rizzo was joined by Tommy Vext, who provided vocal destruction during Rizzo's cover of "Mouth For War" and Sepultura's "Territory". Look out for a NEW Soulfly album this March!
Wrapping the night up was the one and only Slam One Down, who split their set in half in order to pay tribute to Dimebag Darrell. Their first set consisted of crowd favorite's such as "Beer Run" and "Pour One Out", and their second set was a Pantera Jam in memory of Dimebag Darrell. During this jam, Slam One Down were joined by various members of the crowd. Here are some videos courtesy of Panchito!
All in all it was a great night, and we are very proud of finishing 2011 on such a high note! But hey, take note of this:
- January 6: The Empire Shall Fall release show with East of the Wall, Alekhine's Gun, and Bangladeafy.
- January 13: The first ever "Underground Metal Friday's" at Fontana's Bar in New York City (lineup to be announced soon)!
IMPORTANT: Shane Train (Slam One Down bassist) is a "Mono" bass gig bag which had two Warwicks: A transparent black 5 string Streamer LX with chrome hardware and a 5 string Warwick Infinity with a natural zebra wood finish and black hardware.
PLEASE if you have any information regarding them. Email us at events@hornsuprocks.com. There is a substantial reward. He needs them back!

Fronted by vocalist Jason Lekberg, Ikillya's new album titled "Recon" is a fresh sounding groove machine full of furious well polished songs. Queens Metal Meltdown!
For the first time ever, Horns Up Rocks, Rock Sur, and Brutal Bitches Productions are joining forces to bring YOU a hard hitting Heavy Metal show in Jackson Heights, Queens! The mission is to blend into perfection a mix of Pure American Metal bands with some Pure Latino Metal bands. Come and find out the results of this melting pot of a show!
Performing that night will be:
The Judas Syndrome: In the modern era of the Heavy Metal genre you find a lot of different styles or sub genres which encompass a multitude of influences from all the Metal music innovators. Taking on what has been done to birth Metal in the 80's and adding to it elements of electronica and modern extreme Metal, The Judas Syndrome aim to take the future of metal by storm.
Raza Odiada is the sonic assault that takes place when a group of guys from Mexico City come to New York City to infect the masses with some pure Mexican Metal! Their mission has always been to get on stage and make people lose their minds with the extreme Death Metal sounds that this band presents.
Slam One Down is famous for keeping the crowd on their toes and very excited thanks to their crisp tight sounding music that is filled with positive Heaviness. Not only do they play their party anthems, but they always throw in a few killer covers like Pantera's "Becoming", Metallica's "Seek and Destroy", and ACDC's "Dirty Deeds", just to name a few.
Scars Of Envy is a New Jersey based Metal band whose purpose is to expel their demons through the music they write in hopes to connect with the listeners and to purvey "A Message of Hope, Through Hostile Expression"!
Viruzy has been at it for many years, while many have come and go, the lineup today has the common goal of creating expressive music that's full of conviction. They are not trying to make music for fame and glory, they just want people to listen to their strong message about all the things that are wrong with today's society.
Black Tears is an Ecuadorian Gothic/Doom Metal band that was born in New York City in 2008. The band has been gaining a lot of fans thanks to their live shows all around the tri-state area. At the moment they are busy recording their demo, which will be distributed internationally.
Cost: $12 (in advance: Email events@hornsuprocks.com for tickets), $15 (day of the show)

Horns Up Rocks 1 Year Anniversary = Metal Magic
This past Saturday we celebrated our 1 year anniversary at the Heavy Metal Mecca = Duff's Brooklyn. The night was a complete success from start to finish, and we proved that if the fans of Heavy Music unite, nobody can touch us. The event kicked off around 8 pm to a crowd of about 60 people. While Slam One Down was setting up, the jukebox was cranking some powerful music and getting everyone pumped. Next thing you know, Slam One Down sound checked and everyone's jaws dropped! Since the crowd was hungry for some furious Metal, our founder Jo Schüftan quickly introduced the band and kicked off the rage session by putting back a Pabst Blue Ribbon with the aid of the Slam One Down funnel. The party was on!
For the next hour, Slam One Down kept the crowd excited with their crisp tight sounding music filled with positive Heaviness. Not only did they play their party anthems, but they even threw in a few covers like Pantera's "Becoming", Metallica's "Seek and Destroy", and Machine Head's "Davidian". This are all obviously very hard songs to cover, but they performed them flawlessly. Needless to say, the crowd demanded an encore. Through the rest of the night everyone literally bumped elbows with each other and peacefully fought their way to the bar. We have actually not seen Duff's that packed and in such raging mode, since the Official Slayer CD Release party for "World Painted Blood" in October of 2009. The success of this event was thanks to the amazing staff at Duff's who made sure everyone had enough to drink, We actually didn't see anyone without a drink at hand, and at the end of the night the amount of PBR cans all over the bar made it clear that the night was a complete riot! Another key factor to the nights success was having the Slam One Down crew over, they all came to have a good time and make sure that nobody was standing still.
We can proudly say: Mission accomplished! If you missed this party or arrived too late and missed the band, they will be headlining The 2011 March Metal Beatdown at the Trash Bar in Brooklyn on Saturday March 5th. See you there!
FYI: VIdeo of the night and plenty of pictures coming very soon!
Here are some quotes that pretty much sum up the Horns Up Rocks 1 Year Anniversary FIesta!
"RELENTLESS weekend of fun - Thanks to MISERY, Joey Z, and Nightcrawler for a kick ass Friday night (Check out MISERY's CD "EVIL IS CROWNED", you won't be disappointed) and to SLAM ONE DOWN and Joseph Schüftan for makin' Saturday night a fuckin' 4 alarm rager !! We're crankin' it up a few more notches this week - Stay tuned !!" - Jimmy Duff (Owner of Duff's Brooklyn)
"Awesome fucking night in Brooklyn. Thanks to Joseph Schüftan and Duff's Brooklyn for having us and helping us bring the party. Everyone went apeshit over the new covers and we even played a brand new original song that we didn't expect to play. Cheers to Horns Up Rocks on their one year anniversary and we wish them many more." -Slam One Down"Had a great time at the Horns Up Rocks Anniversary! It's great to participate in something so genuine, communal, and straight up brutal! Just wanted to say that the Lies Beneath gang appreciates what you do and would love to continue to participate. Let me know about any events in the future that we can be part of! Whether it's at Duff's, Public Assembly, Crash Mansion even a basement! it'd be an honor! Keep your horns strong! \m/ - Andrew Czegledi (Drummer of Lies Beneath)
"I haven't seen Duff's jumping like that since the Slayer party...and that's saying a lot." Lou Toro (exZAKKed)
"OMFG! Last night was AMAZING! Thanks so much to everyone who came and made the night so special! The fact that we packed Duff's Brooklyn and everyone had a good time with Slam One Down as the soundtrack of chaos, simply put: HISTORY in the making! Missed it? Well, come to the 2011 March Metal Beatdown on March 5th at The Trash Bar!" - Jo Schüftan (Founder of Horns Up Rocks)Pictures courtesy of Rene Encarnacion and Evil Steve!

HEADLINER
RESOLUTION 15: We are very stoked to have Resolution 15 on board! This is a band whose sound is rooted in Thrash Metal, Hardcore, Punk, and Classical Music. They use violins in place of guitars to disseminate their egalitarian message of global change.Formed in 2007, Resolution 15 released their self-titled debut to rave reviews (being featured on the front page of CD Baby for an entire month and in articles in numerous metal blogs) and quickly became a fixture in the New York metal scene. Get to the show early, because you don't want to miss this awesome band!
FLAMES OF FURY was founded in the Spring of 2009, by guitarist Jason Perez & vocalist Angelica Vargas, with the goal of creating the most intense and exciting metal songs possible. With a dedicated stride towards excellence with every note composed, played, and sung, Flames of Fury will blow you away with their extreme mix of power, speed, thrash, epic, doom, black, symphonic, traditional, & modern metal styles.
ALEKHINE'S GUN is a Thrash Metal outfit from Brooklyn, New York. Blending the aggressive styles of Death and Thrash Metal with fierce in your face vocals, AG is strategically looking to make their move in the Metal scene! Come check them out!
FENRISMAW came to life during the winter of 2009. Fenrismaw is the musical manifestation of ancient, primal devastation. Keeping to the creed of real musicianship, and the mentality of the darkest of Metal, Fenrismaw blends primordial savagery with cold, sinister complexity. This is an age drowned in sub par, mediocrity. This is a genre stagnating in the filth of those parasites who do nothing for Metal. We are here as an ally to those true brothers and sisters who have been driving Metal forward. The realm that the Gods of Metal have forged before us is ours to lay claim to.
EMPYREON emerges onto the scene with an innovative sound consisting of keyboard driven melodic metal. Hard to define or categorize, the band prefers to simply call it "Metal".Comprised of NYC based session musicians, the band had begun as a mutual side project and musical curiosity among members Mike Khalilov (Keyboard, Guitars), Phil Coard (Bass) and Frank Godla (Drums). It began with the Eternal Nightmare EP arranged, recorded by Don Chaffin (Ace Frehley), produced by Eyal Levi (Daath), and mastered by Scott Hull (Meatloaf, John Zorn) within just 1 week of inception.
PLUS 1 SPECIAL GUEST!
THE HIXON is a hard hitting Thrash Metal band that leaves a mark of chaos wherever they roam. Ever since their inception over 10 years ago, The Hixon have remained true to their roots and have always proved that Thrash Metal is alive and well.Last year they toured with Charred Walls of The Damned around the tri-state area, and together with Horns Up Rocks and Jefferson Avenue Productions, they brought their annual Hixonfest to New York City. The event was a huge hit and people are still talking about it. This is why we decide to invite them to the 2011 March Metal Beatdown as our special guest!
