Deftones NEW video for "Beauty School"
Sacramento's deftones have a new video for the song "Beauty School". Directed by 13thWitness, the video features shots of the band performing live and plenty of behind the scenes footage.
"Beauty School" is one of the tracks from the deftones' latest release titled "Diamond Eyes" (released on May 4 via Warner). "Diamond Eyes" sold 62,000 copies in the US in its first week and debuted at the Number 6 position on The Billboard 200 chart. "Diamond Eyes" is the deftones first album, since their bassist Chi Cheng had a horrific car accident on November 4, 2008. The accident left him in a comatose state.

Without further due, here is the brand new deftones video for their song "Beauty School":

Goatwhore Launches Studio Update!
NOLA's Blackened Death Metal masters Goatwhore, are currently working on their fifth studio album (set to be released in February of 2012) at Erik Rutan's Mana Studios in Tampa, Florida. Today the band posted a studio update on Metal Blade TV, which you can watch below. The video was shot and edited by the band and is the first in a series of videos that will chronicle the recording of the new album. The band is making quick progress and drums have already been completed.
"Tracking for the new record went very smoothly with the help of excellent equipment. I played a Pearl Reference kit with Sabian AA cymbals. The drums sound like canons of doom. Every time I hear the toms I want to break something because they sound so damn good. The AA's were a perfect match in their ability to cut through the thunder of the drums. This record is going to have a giant pair of balls hanging from it." - Drummer Zack Simmons
Once again, the band is working with legendary Heavy Music producer Erik Rutan, who has also produced the band's previous two efforts, "A Haunting Curse" and "Carving Out the Eyes of God".
As soon as Goatwhore wraps up recording the album, they will immediately hit the road for headlining shows starting in Tampa, FL. From there, they will join the Exhumed tour along with Cephalic Carnage and Havok. The tour stars in Gallup, NM on October 26th.

Charetta: New Album, New Video, CD Listening Party & Irving Plaza Takeover
New York's "Sweet Rocking" band Charetta, have been working hard on their next big move during the last year. After months of mysterious silence, yesterday (June 29) the band premiered a brand new video for their song "Lights Out" (which you can view below). Charetta will also be hosting a CD Listening party tomorrow (July 1) at Double Down Saloon in New York City were they will be presenting their brand new album titled "A Nation Distracted" (to be released on July 21). They will also be performing their entire new album for the first time ever at the Gotham Rocks third year anniversary concert at Irving Plaza, also in New York City. The band will be performing along with Killcode, The August Infinity, Sweet Fix, Bound by Substance, Woods of Arden and Crush Of Empires.
Charetta started when musicians guitarist Pablo LaFrossia and drummer Adonis Sanchez, who have been part of the New York rock scene for years, decided to start a band that would be all about the "Sweet Rocking". Don't get confused though, Charetta will keep your head banging throughout their entire set. While many bands perform better on smaller stages, Charetta has proved that they can play on a big stage like they did at the Highline Ballroom for the two year anniversary of Gotham Rocks, and that they can also play at more intimate venues like at the Best Buy store here in New York City.
“A Nation Distracted” was recorded at Vudu Studios with producers Mike Watts (Story of the Year, Theory of a Deadman) and Steven Haigler (Fuel, Brand New). “Great grooves, monster riffs, and killer vocals,” says Watts.
Artist biography:
Charetta (pronounced “sha-RET-uh”) consists of Angelina DelCarmen (vocals), Pablo LaFrossia (guitar), Chris Fullam (guitar), Richard Mollo (bass), and Adonis Sanchez (drums). The band started in 2007 when Pablo and Adonis, who were long-time friends and veterans of the local scene, wanted to start a new project with an amazing vocalist. Through a Myspace posting, they found Angelina. “She sang on our demos and just blew us away. One audition was all we needed to hear,” says Adonis. It was at that time the project was named, but the band prefers to keep the meaning of Charetta a mystery. Only their most dedicated fans know their secret. Several months and many auditions later, the band added Richard as their permanent bassist, and the band’s foundation was born.
In July 2009, the band released their debut album “Defying the Inevitable” which was produced by Brett Hestla (Creed, Dark New Day). Since then, Charetta has made countless appearances in the Northeast region (opening for national acts such as Saliva and Smile Empty Soul), put out a music video for “Runs In The Blood,” and have had their music featured in the independent film release “5th of a Degree,” as well as the television program “The Mun2 Look” on Mun2. In late 2010, before going into the studio to record what would become “A Nation Distracted,” the band added Chris as their second guitarist. “Chris and I have similar styles. We are both heavily influenced by Mark Tremonti (Creed, Alter Bridge), so it was a very natural fit,” shares Pablo. Now a 5-piece, the band is performing regionally to promote their upcoming release.CHARETTA - "Lights Out" | Filmed & Directed by JayR Castillo & Sigh Robes from JayR Castillo on Vimeo.

The Judas Syndrome cover Lady Gaga's "Judas"
New York City thrashers The Judas Syndrome decided to risk their reputation for being a hard hitting band, and to cover the song "Judas" by Pop Queen Lady Gaga. While Heavy Music is all about being open minded to new things, we don't think a band that is looking to get signed should be risking their reputation by covering a Pop song, specially when a handful of other artists have already covered Lady Gaga. Why not be original and cover a Heavy Music classic and add a unique flavor to it? Or taking a wise risk like Resolution 15 did when they covered U2's "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and proved that they are phenomenal musicians. Same goes for Slam One Down, who blew everyone's mind at the Horns Up Rocks 1 year anniversary party with their flawless covers of Pantera's "Becoming", ACDC's "Dirty Deeds" and Machine Head's "Davidian".Some of you may think that we are being too harsh, but the music industry today is not looking for bands that are taking risks without measuring the consequences. Nowadays a record label will only invest in a band that is smart about how they handle their business on and off stage. Our advice to any up and coming band is to think carefully about what you want to represent and what your ultimate goal is. Don't put years of hard work down, by making the wrong moves.
Here is The Judas Syndrome covering the song "Judas" by Lady Gaga:

Riffing It Up with Kirk Windstein
Kirk Windstein is synonymous to crushing riffs that seek vulnerable ears and destroy them without mercy. His guitar tone is recognizable by millions of Heavy Music fans worldwide, and as result imitated by almost every band out there. Many can try to sound like Kirk, but there is only one man that can handle being in three successful bands, being a father, and a soon to be husband. After being an active musician for almost 25 years, you would think that Kirk is ready to slow down and lay back. The truth of the matter is that when it comes to the circle of hard-hitting musicians that come from New Orleans, they play music from the heart and not even a devastating hurricane can stop them from spreading their music like a wild fire.
Taking it easy has never been part of Kirk’s ritual; the man is by far one of the hardest working musicians in Heavy Music today. Not only does he lead Crowbar, but he is also a vital part of the mighty Down and Jamey Jasta’s right hand man in Kingdom Of Sorrow. He is also working on a solo record that he hopes to release sometime this year (more details in the video interview).
During Crowbar’s recent stop in New York City for the Metalliance Tour, we sat down to chat with Kirk about life on the road, his music and how after 25 years he decided to leave his boozing years behind in order to focus on his family. This exclusive interview took place in side Irving Plaza as the fans were arriving to catch one of the best tours of the year. Before we get into the interview, here are some facts about Kirk Windstein:
- Kirk was born in Middlesex, England on April 14, 1965.
- His career started in 1987 when he joined a band called Victorian Blitz as guitarist. The band was a Judas Priest and Iron Maiden cover band.
- Today he sings and plays guitar in Crowbar, Down, and Kingdom of Sorrow.
DISCOGRAPHY:

- Obedience Thru Suffering: released on September 26, 1991
- Crowbar: released on October 12, 1993
- Live +1 (EP): released on March 29,1994
- Time Heals Nothing: released on May 23, 1995
- Broken Glass: released on October 29, 1996
- Odd Fellows Rest: released on July 7, 1998
- Equilibrium: released on March 7, 2000
- Sonic Excess in its Purest Form: released on August 8, 2001
- Lifesblood for the Downtrodden: released on February 9, 2005
- Sever the Wicked Hand: released on February 2011

- NOLA: released on September 19,1995
- Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow : March 26, 2002
- Down III: Over the Under: September 25, 2007
- Down IV: TBD

- Kingdom of Sorrow: February 19, 2008
- Behind the Blackest Tears: June 8, 2010
Without further due, here is the exclusive interview we did with riff master Kirk Windstein, in which he discusses life as a touring musician, his future musical plans and how he was able to get his life back on track.
We want to thank Kirk, Bill Meis at EOne Music and Steve Seabury!

Crowbar: Sever the Wicked Hand Review
When it comes to fitting in crushing riffs in harmony with dirty vocals, grooving drums, and hard hitting bass, Kirk Windstein has the perfect formula. From the first note on the opening track "Isolation (Desperation)" you know its a Crowbar record, but the band still managed to not sound outdated. You know how many bands have a signature sound, and when you hear new material it sounds expired? Well, Crowbar managed to keep their signature sound intact and fresh. This ladies and gentleman is really hard to do.
One move that has proven to be lethal in Crowbar's evolution, is Kirk's work with Down and Kingdom Of Sorrow. While Kirk always brings in his unique sound, the fact that he is working with different musicians and within different styles, benefits what he creates with his big baby called Crowbar!
While we could give you a track by track summary, and tell you which tracks stand out in our opinion, we rather give you the chance to listen to the record with your own ears. Check out the exclusive AOL Listening Party for Crowbar's "Sever the Wicked hand"!
Here is the track listing of Crowbar's "Sever the Wicked Hand":
1. Isolation (Desperation)
02. Sever The Wicked Hand
03. Liquid Sky And Cold Black Earth
04. Let Me Mourn
05. The Cemetery Angels
06. As I Become One
07. A Farewell to Misery
08. Protectors Of The Shrine
09. I Only Deal In Truth
10. Echo An Eternity
11. Cleanse Me, Heal Me
12. Symbiosis
Make sure to catch the mighty Crowbar on stage:

NEW Madball video for "All Or Nothing"
The mighty Madball taped a video for their song called "All or Nothing" this past November at Southpaw in Brooklyn for their song "All or Nothing", which is taken from their latest album titled "Empire". In case you don't know, Madball are one of the top Hardcore bands of all time and this is why:- Madball was formed in the late 1980s in New York City, as a side-project of Agnostic Front (where Roger Miret would let his brother Freddy "Madball" Cricien take the microphone during Agnostic Front shows).
- In 1995 Madball participated in the N.Y.H.C. Documentary. The documentary included extensive interviews with Freddy as well as a Madball performance on July 29, 1995 at the "Coney Island High". At that show Roger Miret (Freddy's brother), broke several vertebrae in his back.
- Their discography is untouchable:
Studio Albums and EPs:
- 1989: Ball of Destruction 7" EP (reissued with 14 extra tracks in 1996)
- 1992: Droppin' Many Suckers
- 1994: Set It Off
- 1996: Demonstrating My Style
- 1998: Look My Way
- 2000: Hold It Down
- 2004: N.Y.H.C. EP
- 2005: Legacy
- 2007: Infiltrate the System
- 2010: Empire

The "Big 4" takeover CALIFORNIA
The "Big 4" of Thrash Metal are taking over California on April 23rd. After the success of last years tour in Europe, the Metallica camp decided it was only fair to have the 4 American bands performing in US soil. Joining Metallica, will be Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Start warming up your necks and training your ears, for what will be a historical event in Heavy Music!Last years "Big 4" was considered by many as the most important happening in Heavy Music!
"The MVP of 2010 in Metal is Metallica, and the reason being the "Big 4". It's Metallica that did that... obviously everyone wanted to be a part of it. But it was Metallica's James and Lars who sat down, because they are in charge of the Metallica corporation, and they made the awesome decision of doing the festival with all 4 bands. That jump started the biggest moment in Metal in 2010, which was the 4 bands performing on stage together." - Jose Mangin (Sirius XM Liquid Metal and MTV2 Headbanger's Ball)
Here is the official trailer:

The "Big 4" in the USA
This morning the following image was posted on Metallica's Official site:
Does this mean that the "Big 4" of 80s Thrash Metal are taking over the United States? If so, where will the tour take place? Will it be a national tour ala Ozzfest? Or will it just hit a few cities? A European tour is also being planned for this summer. Regardless of when and where it happens, this will be the tour of the year! So who are the "Big 4"?
- METALLICA
- SLAYER
- MEGADETH
- ANTHRAX
The "Big 4" teamed up in Europe last summer at the Sonisphere Festival, for a series of historical concerts. One of those concerts took place in Sofia, Bulgaria on June 22, 2010. This show was recorded and edited for a DVD/Blu-ray. It was also aired in over 800 cinemas worldwide on the same day of the festival. It is calculated that over 100,000 people experienced this concert. But it didn't stop there!
Here are some statistics about this release:
- The two-disc DVD release of "The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria", has been certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipments in excess of 100,000 copies. (Note: Due to the fact that the set consists of two discs, it was eligible for platinum certification after shipping 50,000 copies; platinum certification for a single-disc release is 100,000 copies.)
- "The Big Four: Live From Sofia, Bulgaria" debuted at number 1 on the Billboard "Top Music Videos" sales chart in November.
- The set also debuted at No. 1 in Canada, the U.K. and Austria, while entering at No. 4 in Germany.
"So it was a lot of fun, a lot of memories, a lot of fun times — new fun times, and fun times talking about the old fun times. So it sort of was a, it was a winner on every front." - Lars Ulrich (Metallica)

CROWBAR: OFFICIAL listening party
Crowbar has represented Heavy Music since 1989, and they have never released an album that sucks. On Sunday November 28, thanks to Doc Coyle (God Forbid) and Ria Katz (Santos Party House), God Forbid, Mutiny Within, Dead Men Dreaming, Timeless, Human Decline, The Judas Syndrome, Empyreon and a Great Day To Die, took center stage at Santos Party House in New York City, in order to help Tommy Vext (former singer of Divine Heresy and Snot) raise some funds. The matinee was a memorable event, and it was really good to see so many people supporting such an awesome cause. While all the bands kicked ass, the highlight of the night was when Tommy returned to the stage after 17 months (his last show had been on May 17, 2009 with Snot in California), and played an emotional acoustic set. Tommy was joined by his best friend Doc Coyle from God Forbid, who is also his band-member on a new project they recently started working on (pre-production started on December 9th).
The project was suppose to start months ago, but it had to come to a halt when he was viciously attacked by his own brother. Here is an extract of an interview with Tommy (courtesy of Metal Insider) explaining what happened that horrific day.
"On the evening of September 19th I was leaving my apartment in Brooklyn to visit my sister and was struck over the back of my head from behind during an attempted robbery. I fell and turned around and was struck again with a crowbar. The metal bar broke my left arm and this is when I saw my attacker. A 6’1, 320 pound man covered in dirt & blood. It was my estranged brother. Homeless, intoxicated and desperate, he repeatedly hit me on the back and sides with the weapon as I tried to shield myself from the blows. I managed to get on my feet and throw him off of me. I took off to a neighbors house and called 911. The ambulance arrived and I was rushed to the Hospital. After multiple X-rays & MRI’s, the doctors found I had a fractured skull and broken arm. I was discharged the next day. Because my attacker had not been apprehended I was staying with a friend in Manhattan during the first few days of my recovery. Four days after the incident, I collapsed in a Manhattan restaurant and was rushed back to the Hospital. This time the doctors found I had been internally bleeding since the 19th and now my spleen had ruptured. I went into emergency surgery at Cornell Hospital where my spleen was removed and I received a blood transfusion."
Here is a video that our good friend Tommy Jones from "The Studio" in New Jersey, shot and edited at the benefit. If you couldn't make it, but still want to help Tommy out. You can donate any amount via his PayPal account: tommyvext@gmail.com. We also have an EXCLUSIVE interview with Tommy coming soon!

BIOHAZARD
While the band has had its ups and downs, including a few lineup changes, today they stand tall and strong. Their original lineup is back together, and after experiencing Biohazard live at Irving Plaza in New York City in 2008 and at The Crazy Donkey in Long Island in 2009, the 4 man have not lost the fire that got them worldwide recognition. We are of course talking about Evan Seinfeld (Vocals/Bass), Billy Graziadei and Bobby Hambel (Guitars), and Danny Schuler (Drums).

As soon as Biohazard gets on stage nobody is safe, this Hardcore veterans can wake the dead up with their energetic display of musical fury. While their message has changed throughout the years, their power has remained intact. In our opinion, the break they took worked in their favor because now they are at a different phase, and we are pretty sure that their upcoming release is going to be one of the best records of 2011.
Here are some interesting facts about Biohazard:- Biohazard was formed in 1987 in the Bensonhurst neighborhood of Brooklyn.
- Peter Steele (RIP) from Type O Negative and Carnivore, named the band.
- Their first demo was released in 1988, and the media immediately took notice, since they felt that the lyrics displayed fascist and white supremacist views, even though Evan Seinfeld is Jewish.
- The band was accused of promoting racism through their music, and after denying this for years, Seinfeld and Graziadei explained that it was a publicity stunt to win over Carnivore’s fans. Eventually, they stopped playing the controversial songs. From that moment on the band started to transmit a message of tolerance and anti-racism.
- While Biohazard has never considered themselves a Hardcore band, they became a key asset of the New York Hardcore scene. During the CBGB’s days, they often shared the stage with NYHC titans Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front.
- In the past many clubs have refused to let Biohazard play, since they are afraid that the show will be too violent. As a result, bands like Mucky Pup would sneak them on stage to perform a few songs before their set.

The Seventh Void
Seventh Void was established in 2003, when Johnny Kelly and Kenny Hickey from Type O Negative joined forces with Matt brown from A Pale Horse Named Death and Hank Hell. Their debut album “Heaven is Gone” was released in North America on April of 2009 on Vinnie Paul’s (Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah) record label “Big Vin Records”, and in November 2010 in Europe via “Napalm Records”. The first time I heard of Seventh Void was after Peter Steele passed away this in April. Once I heard the musical power of Seventh Void, I couldn’t believe me it took that long to discover then. But hey, better late than never! “Heaven is Gone” is one of my favorite tracks out of the album, and it was also the first song I heard from them. I’ve always been a fan of Kenny’s voice, especially in songs like “All Hallows Eve” & “We Hate Everyone” by Type O Negative. Another factor that adds to the bands over sound is having Johnny on drums. Johnny in my opinion is one of the most influential drummers in Heavy Metal, along with Sal Abruscato (Life Of Agony, A Pale Horse Named Death), Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan, Hellyeah), Lars Ulrich (Metallica) and Dave Lombardo (Slayer).
My ear drums tell me: “This band kicks ass!” From the moment I listen to the album from beginning to end. Every song has its own feel, but never loses its edge like most bands do when they try experimenting. There are certain “mainstream” bands that write one or two good songs, and the rest of the album sucks! Seventh Void is not this type of band, and you can tell that they work carefully on every song to make sure that the whole album is good front beginning to end.
I have had the pleasure of chatting with Johnny Kelly a few times, and he is just a down to earth guy who is lucky to be doing what he loves to do. His passion and humbleness are the reason why he has so much respect and support from the fans. From what I have heard, the chances of having Seventh Void perform in Toronto are slim. But if I have to travel to see them, I will be the first in line.. Cheers and Keep those Horns High UP!

In Memoriam: A Tribute to Chuck Schuldiner
Yesterday marked the ninth year anniversary of the passing of a true legend: Charles Michael "Chuck" Schuldiner (May 13, 1967 – December 13, 2001). Chuck was the founder of one of the most renowned and influential bands in Heavy Metal: DEATH. Schuldiner was the singer, main songwriter, rhythm and lead guitarist of Death (founded in 1983). Due to his influence and talent, he is worthily known as "The Father of Death Metal." Known for his modesty and kindness, Chuck often denounced the flattering attention he received for his accomplishments. "I don’t think I should take the credits for this Death Metal stuff. I am just a guy from a band, and I think Death is a Metal band.”
Chuck started playing guitar at the tender age of 9. After his older brother passed away, his parents figured that giving him a new hobby would help young Chuck to cope with this significant loss. When he was 16, Chuck started a band called Mantas, which eventually became Death. His initial influences include: Iron Maiden, Billy Idol, and French band Sortilège. In 1987, Schuldiner released the first Death album, which he titled “Scream Bloody Gore”. A year later he released “Leprosy”, and in February of 1990 he released the critically acclaimed “Spiritual Healing”. One of the key moves Chuck made in order to get Death to the next level, was to recruit fellow legend and guitarist James Murphy.

The turning point for Death was when they released their breakthrough album “Human”. On this album Chuck explored more technical and progressive abilities, which eventually became Death’s signature sound. This musical progression and perfection continued on 1993's “Individual Thought Patterns”, 1995's “Symbolic”, and “The Sound of Perseverance”, which was released in 1998. Over time, Death underwent many lineup changes, which opened the doors for various musicians who are now considered Heavy Metal all-stars. A few of these all-stars who contributed to Death’s legacy include: Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, Sean Reinert, Paul Masvidal, and Steve DiGiorgio. With these accomplishments, Death warranted their perpetual legendary status throughout the Metal world, which still stands strong today.
Throughout his career, Schuldiner was never afraid to take on controversial issues and uphold his own personal views. On the album “Spiritual Healing”, he divulged his anti-drug values through his lyrics for "Living Monstrosity" and even raged against abortion on the track "Altering the Future.” He was also known to speak openly against “satanic” themes, which have always been part of Death Metal. He disputed in opposition to stereotypes and classifications that portrayed Metal-heads to be harmful to animals and people, or to be purveyors of death and malevolence. He strongly opposed artists who were "out of control", and attracted negative attention to the Death Metal scene. Chuck was a role model to the fans, and also to the bands he had the chance to influence through his music and viewpoints.
After further evolvement of his musical endeavors and styles, Chuck decided to retire the Death name, and formed a new band called Control Denied. In 1999, they released “The Fragile Art of Existence”.
Around May of 1999, Chuck had been experiencing pain in his upper neck. After being sent for an MRI exam, he was sadly diagnosed with life threatening pontine glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer that attacks the brain stem. He was immediately sent to undergo radiation therapy. In October 1999, Chuck’s family announced that the tumor had necrotized. Then in January 2000, chuck underwent a surgical procedure in order to remove the rest of the tumor. The operation was a success, and Chuck continued his work with Control Denied.

In May 2001 (two years after his initial diagnosis), the cancer returned. This time, due to a financial debt he was not able to receive the immediate surgery that his condition required; to make matters worse his medical insurance denied the coverage of the treatment. Many influential figures of the music industry, as well as a strong alliance of dedicated fans, gathered in support of Chuck’s impact to the music world, and rallied to raise funds to benefit his demanding medical needs. Still unable to acquire the necessary surgical procedure that would possibly save his life, he underwent chemotherapy. The harsh side effects of this treatment immensely weakened Chuck, and took a severe toll on his ability to continue with his music. In late October, Chuck’s frail body fell ill to pneumonia. On December 13th, 2001, at approximately 4 PM (Eastern), Chuck tragically died at the young age of 34.
Today, 9 years after the passing of a true Heavy Metal icon, Chuck’s memory continues to thrive through the influence of his music and the admiration of his ability to always stay true to his beliefs. Chuck is truly a pioneer of Metal, and a hero for all who he has affected with his accomplishments, attitude, and morale. "I would like to live forever, if it was possible", he once said in an interview. Little did he know at the time, that with the significant and historical impact he left on the Metal community, he surely would.

Life Of Agony: Brooklyn Legends
Brooklyn's Life of Agony surfaced in 1989 when singer Keith Caputo, guitarist Joey Zampella, and bassist Alan Robert, took the New York underground scene by storm. They quickly perfected their angst-filled hybrid of Heavy Metal and Hardcore, obtaining a devoted audience in the process. On the eve of signing with Roadrunner Records, the band recruited former Type O Negative drummer Sal Abruscato as a permanent member. The end result was the first Life Of Agony album “River Runs Red”, which became an instant classic. Thanks to their straight-up energy and aggression in a crossover format, the group toured extensively upon its release. Once the tour was completed, Life Of Agony went back into the studio to work on their next album titled "Ugly", which signaled a complete change of the band's signature Heavy sound. The album resembled the sounds of the alternative stars of the day, especially Stone Temple Pilots, which the record-buying public didn’t favor. Regardless of the record sales, Life O Agony was still able to retain their audience and the resulting tour was a success. Evidence of this success were their tours with Ozzy Osbourne, Korn, Type O Negative, and Anthrax. After the end of the tour, drummer Sal Abruscato exited the band and was replaced by Dan Richardson (formerly from Pro Pain/Crumbsuckers). Their next release was "Soul Searching Sun", which followed the same formula as its predecessor, and was again met by a varied response.

Before the band was scheduled to go on tour, singer Keith Caputo left the group because his heart was no longer in the music. The other band members were crushed, but because of their commitments with the record label, they needed to fill the spot right away. Former Ugly Kid Joe vocalist Whitfield Crane, who had told Joey Z during an Anthrax show about his intentions to play heavier music, filed Caputo’s shoes.
The new lineup only had one week to rehearse and get to know each other musically. Once the tour ended, they went back to the studio and decided that they didn't want to continue as Life of Agony without Caputo. They even flirted with the idea of having their bassist Alan Robert singing and having Stuck Mojo bassist Corey Lowery fill his spot. This strategy never worked and the band disbanded in April of 1999.
In 2003, the original lineup reunited for two shows. The reunion led to a live album titled "River Runs Again", followed by a studio album titled "Broken Valley" (released in June 2005). In 2009, Life of Agony performed their legendary debut album "River Runs Red" in front of a sold out crowd in Brussels Belgium. They filmed the concert in its entirety, and later released a CD/DVD package titled "20 Years Strong: River Runs Red, Live in Brussels".
Now on a more personal note: In January 1998, I went to see Life Of Agony in Toronto not to long after coming back from Italy. Excited as I was about finally going to see the band that got me through some very rough times in my life, everything from addiction to dealing with my father’s death. Nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience on that stage. That night I saw two amazing bands: Megadeth and Life Of Agony...
So the show starts with “River Runs Red”, but what I heard was totally noticeable. Everyone started saying: “Hey that’s not Keith!” “What the fuck?!” Apparently no one was informed that Keith had left the band, man was I pissed! After waiting for so long to see Life Of Agony... and I get Whitfield Crane instead of Keith Caputo. I was never a fan of Ugly Kid Joe and I certainly was not going to like him singing Keith's songs. There was only one thing left to do to show my frustration, and this is when I noticed one thing: everyone was just as frustrated as I was! So what do I do next? I start a “We want Keith” chant. Crane definitely saw and heard the crowds discomfort, as Toronto raised their middle fingers instead of their horns, demanding Keith Caputo. I had no choice but to enjoy the instrumental aspect of the show. With that being said, I hope that Life Of Agony can come back to Toronto at and give me the concert I so badly want to see.
No matter what, I am and will always be a fan of Life Of Agony for life! And for that I raise both hands in the air and give this band the Horns Up!!!! Cheers.

Kirk Windstein (Crowbar, Down, Kingdom of Sorrow) is one of the godfathers of the New Orleans Heavy Music scene, and since the inception of Crowbar in 1989 he’s kept his craft intact. Kirk has been a fundamental asset to the ever changing New Orleans Heavy Music scene, which has brought us bands like Crowbar, Down, Acid Bath, Goatwhore, Eyehategod, Soilent Green, and many others. What sets the NOLA scene apart from other scenes in the country is that the scene was not created around a particular genre; it was created around the musical paradise that is only present in New Orleans, Louisiana: a city that gave birth to Jazz, Sludge Metal and to the New Orleans Saints (current Superbowl champions).
Sludge Metal became an important genre, thanks to musicians like Philip Anselmo (Pantera, Down) Pepper Keenan (COC, Down), Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod, Down), Ben Falgoust (Goatwhore, Soilent Green), and Mike Williams (Eyehategod), who’s goal was to create a musical movement in which everyone unites and challenges each other’s creativity. This movement has lead into a very unique sound, which Windstein has helped to create and establish.
It is evident from the moment Kirk steps on any stage, that everyone loves the “old man” (as Jamey Jasta from Hatebreed calls him). One of the elements that has made Kirk loved by millions of fans worldwide, is the passion and soul he delivers through his music. Whither it’s Crowbar, Down, or Kingdom of Sorrow, Kirk is always the same humble guy who found music as a creative and therapeutic outlet.

Last weekend Kirk brought his “baby” Crowbar to New York City’s Santos Party House, and made it an unforgettable night of Heavy southern Sludge Metal! Crowbar has never disappointed, and wherever they go they make sure everyone leaves with a wide smile. What impacted us the most about Crowbar is how fans of different musical styles always unite at their shows, groove their bodies uncontrollably, and got their soul Crowbent.
What’s in the agenda for Kirk Windstein in 2011?
- New Crowbar record (February 8th through E1 Music).
- US tour in March with Crowbar.
- Recording of the new Down record in the summer.
- Touring with Kingdom of Sorrow in the summer.
We are pretty sure that what you really want to do right now, is watch our EXCLUSIVE interview with Kirk Windstein inside Santos Party House, right after Crowbar's New York City takeover. \m/
