METALLICA's Cliff Burton Would Have Celebrated His 51st Birthday Today - Tribute Available!

When it comes to bass players that have created a NEW style of playing that has influenced millions of bass players in the past, the present, and the future. Metallica's Cliff Burton is the guy to point the finger at when it comes to bass playing in Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. His unique style and precision have been instrumental in the evolution of Heavy Music.

Here are some facts about the great Cliff Burton:

- Cliff was born on February 10, 1962 in Alameda County, California.

- His musical career began at a young age when his father introduced him to classical music.

- The first instrument that Cliff learned was the piano. After many years of playing the piano, Cliff discovered Rock and eventually Heavy Metal.

- When he was only 13 years old his brother died in a tragic accident, this inspired Cliff to start playing the bass guitar. His parents quoted him saying: "I'm going to be the best bassist for my brother."

- In order to make his brother proud, Cliff would practice up to 6 hours a day, which didn't stop after he joined Metallica. Many say that Cliff's style was fundamental in the rise of Metallica to Heavy Metal stardom, here are some facts about Cliff Burton:

- Classical music and Jazz were instrumental in the development of Cliff as a musician, other influences of Cliff were Southern Rock, Country Music and Blues.

- The artists that influenced Cliff as a bass player were: Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath/Heaven and Hell, Blue Öyster Cult, Misfits, John Deacon of Queen, Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, and Geddy Lee of Rush.

- This is Cliff's discography, as you will see he was part of the best Metallica albums ever, which are also some of the best Heavy Metal records of all time:

Studio albums:

* Kill 'Em All (1983)
* Ride the Lightning (1984)
* Master of Puppets (1986)

Demos:

* No Life 'Til Leather (1982) (credited but does not play)
* Megaforce (1983)
* Ride the Lightning (1983)
* Master of Puppets (1985)

They say that only the good die young; this is definitely the case when it comes to Cliff Burton, who died in September 27, 1986 on a fatal bus crash in Sweden while Metallica was on tour in support of their classic record "Master Of Puppets". Today would have been Cliff Burton's 49th birthday. Wherever Cliff is, we are sure he is jamming and keeping the spirit of Heavy Music alive. \m/

"Underground Music Monday's": CHARETTA Are Ready For A NEW Musical Ladder & Need Your Help!

New York's "Sweet Rocking" band Charetta, have been working hard on their musical craft ever since their formation in 2007.  Last year, they presented their brand NEW EP entitled "A Nation Distracted" to the masses and the reaction was immediate. Following the release of their 'A Nation Distracted', they performed at the Gotham Rocks third year anniversary concert at Irving Plaza in New York City and totally stole the show.

Charetta started when musicians guitarist Pablo LaFrossia and drummer Adonis Sanchez, who have been part of the New York rock scene for years, decided to start a band that would be all about the "Sweet Rocking". Don't get confused though, Charetta will keep your head banging throughout their entire set. While many bands perform better on smaller stages, Charetta have proved that they can play on a big stage like they did at the Irving Plaza and that they can also play at more intimate venues like at the Best Buy store in Union Square (New York City).

Charetta consists of:

- Angelina DelCarmen (vocals)
- Pablo LaFrossia (guitar)
- Chris Fullam (guitar)
- Richard Mollo (bass)
- Adonis Sanchez (drums).

The band started in 2007 when Pablo and Adonis, who were long-time friends and veterans of the local scene, wanted to start a new project with an amazing vocalist. Through a Myspace posting, they found Angelina. “She sang on our demos and just blew us away. One audition was all we needed to hear,” says Adonis. It was at that time the project was named, but the band prefers to keep the meaning of Charetta a mystery. Only their most dedicated fans know their secret. Several months and many auditions later, the band added Richard as their permanent bassist, and the band’s foundation was born.

In July 2009, the band released their debut album “Defying the Inevitable” which was produced by Brett Hestla (Creed, Dark New Day). Since then, Charetta has made countless appearances in the Northeast region (opening for national acts such as Saliva and Smile Empty Soul), put out a music video for “Runs In The Blood,” and have had their music featured in the independent film release “5th of a Degree,” as well as the television program “The Mun2 Look” on Mun2. In late 2010, before going into the studio to record what would become “A Nation Distracted,” the band added Chris as their second guitarist. “Chris and I have similar styles. We are both heavily influenced by Mark Tremonti (Creed, Alter Bridge), so it was a very natural fit,” shares Pablo.

As mentioned above,
in 2011, Charetta presented their brand NEW EP entitled "A Nation Distracted" and have been touring regionally ever since. So what's next for Charetta? Here is a message from the band:

"We are currently in the finishing stages of writing music for our next release and we need your help.  Recording is tentatively scheduled for March, 2013 in Long Island, NY. As you all know, we are an independent band and creating a professionally recorded and produced product is an extremely expensive task. By backing this project you will not only receive some fantastic rewards, but you will also ensure that our next album is the best sounding music we can possibly create. Our current goal is to raise just enough funds for the production and recording of a NEW 5 song EP. However if we are able to raise more than the $5,000 goal, we can potentially record more songs and possibly a full length album. This release will initially be available for download only, but we hope to offer a physical product as well later in the year. We are extremely thankful to have such loyal fans and we hope that together we will reach and exceed our goal so that we can provide you with lots of new CHARETTA music in 2013."

Help Charetta out by backing their Kickstarter Campaign!

GODSMACK Announce Temporary Hiatus - Statement By Sully Erna Available!

Recently, ARTISTdirect.com editor-in-chief Rick Florino had the chance to chat with GODSMACK's Sully Erna. During the interview, Erna announced that GODSMACK is taking a hiatus in 2013. Check it out:

ARTISTdirect.com: Do you feel like the "Avalon" box set is the best gateway into and overview of your world?

Sully: Yeah, I'm really happy with it. We all just stumbled onto this idea. The more I was doing solo activity, the more I was documenting. At first, we didn't even realize we were capturing what we had. We had a couple of friends, myself, and some of the band filming in the studio while we were recording the record. Later on, when we were trying to make something out of nothing, I handed this editor a big box of tapes and said, "Make some kind of cool, making-of thing." I didn't it was going to be for all of this. That's what triggered this whole thing. It went from finding this really cool making-of the album to tying into the whole theme of music for me. When I was going out on my solo shows, it had "an evening with," "Storytellers" vibe. I fell upon this idea of, "Wow, what a gift music really is." That started triggering all of this stuff. What I started to realize, just from sharing a bottle of wine with somebody, we'd be talking about music and theory and how music is just vibrations. It's just strings vibrating, and yet when they create different frequencies, it creates emotions in people — even without lyrics. You can hear a violin player play something and get teary-eyed. I thought, "This is heavy, man. That really is the power of music. It's a miracle." It's a universal language, and it's almost unexplained. From there, we'd film a live show. All of these different things became components for the box set. We kept building off of that. Once we had the idea of putting this together as a package, we started thinking, "What else can we include?" That's when we came up with the "Golden Ticket" concept. We wanted to personalize it so it's "Sully Erna everything." It's a little bit of a history of me and my life, from how I grew up to what my favorite t-shirts and incenses are. Plus, it's the making-of everything.

ARTISTdirect.com: Does the open the door to the next project?

Sully: Of course! I'm building towards branding my name and freeing up myself to do what I want to do without having a ceiling over my head. As much as I love GODSMACK and my boys in GODSMACK, it really is what it is. Over the years, we've tried to branch out and create songs like "Serenity" and "Shine Down". Even though our audience accepted it and they became successful singles on the radio, they weren't really crossover singles for us. They were kind of saying, "They're cool songs, but when are you guys going to play 'The Enemy' or 'Bad Religion'? Let's get back to the muscle!" [laughs] Over the years, we've identified GODSMACK to be a powerhouse rock band, which it should be, but there's also this other side of me. I can't keep it trapped inside. I have to explore it and release this other kind of music that I love playing. I also love sitting down at the piano with my daughter and creating music and playing acoustically. "Avalon" helped me branch out and allow more vulnerability and things like that. That creates an opportunity to not have a ceiling over my head whether it gets into acting, TV, film, and different things I'd like to pursue. I think it's going to open up that avenue for me. I heard an interview with [AEROSMITH's] Tom Hamilton, and he struck the nail right on the head for me. He said, "I realized music is always something I wanted to do with my life, but it's not everything I wanted to do with my life." I was like, "Boom, there it is right there. That's exactly how I feel. Music is one of those things I wanted to do my whole life, but I also realized that it's not everything I want to do." Even though I think I'll always be a musician and entertain in some way, I may want to tap into some other avenues and continue to brand myself rather than being pigeonholed into a certain genre of music.

ARTISTdirect.com: What's next with GODSMACK?

Sully: We're going to take some time away now because we just ran for the last two years. It's time for us to take a break and get away from the markets for a little bit so we don't overplay them. We're taking 2013 off. Maybe towards the end of the year or early 2014, we may start getting into the studio and writing. Now, we're going to lay low. We may pop up once in a while to do a radio festival or something. I'm going to take all of 2013 to focus on my solo stuff and see any doors I can open along the way.

You can peep the entire interview here: ARTISTdirect.com

SLAYER Performs In India For The First Time Ever & We Have Video To Prove It!

Heavy Metal history was written this past Saturday, October 20th, as SLAYER performed in India for the first time in the bands career. The bands historic performance took place at the Vladivar Rock 'N India event in Bangalore, India.

SLAYER was once again joined by EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt, who has been filling in for SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman for nearly two years while he recovers from contracting necrotizing fasciitis, likely caused by a spider bite, in January 2011.

Multi-camera video footage of the "War Ensemble" performance from the Bangalore concert can be seen below.

As previously reported, SLAYER have two songs recorded for their next batch of NEW music. Kerry King recently announced that they have two more songs in the grill, that are missing vocals and leads. During a recent interview with Artisan News, King spoke about the NEW album and whither or not Jeff Hanneman's spider bite injury (more about this HERE) will delay the production of the record.

Has Jeff Hanneman's injury delayed the NEW SLAYER?

"Not yet. We've recorded very little. We got a little bit done. We had a 12-day window where we hijacked [producer] Greg Fidelman from METALLICA and worked with him a little bit. So we've got two [new songs] done; they've gotta be mixed. We've got two other ones that need vocals and leads. [There are] three other demos and three other [tracks] we still have to demo. But [this summer's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour] is the last thing we're doing, so hopefully we'll get [the rest of the album] done before we pick up and tour again in October."

Jeff Hanneman's flesh eating disease.

"You hear about it, but I didn't even think we had that kind of spider in California. And I really think at the end of the day it's a speculation, because his arm was so fucked up, I can't imagine them even finding where they think it started, if you had my opinion. But, you know, that flesh-eating stuff, you can get scratched by a nail, you can get scratched by anything, and if you don't take care of it, it's gonna turn into something like that. But whatever got him, that is what happened — he had had the disease."

"We are expecting about 10,000 fans to rock with the band, which will play some of its best lyrics that made SLAYER the most sought after by metal fans the world over," United Spirits vice-president William Devadass said.

In order to ensure that the production process progresses smoothly, the band has kidnapped producer Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH, BLOODBATH) for what will be the bands ninth studio album. Get this: the upcoming album is called 'The Living Infinite' and it will be a double album.

Recently, SOILWORK have posted video footage of the band's guitarist, David Andersson, laying down tracks to rape (or Pro Tools). Check it out HERE.

Here is a statement by vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid regarding the NEW album:

“So here’s the scoop. Me and the boys have been waiting to share this for quite some time now: 'The Living Infinite' will be a double album! A REAL double album, in the true sense of the word, which means no fillers and no left-overs.

"I’ve been wanting to do this for a while and I proposed the idea to the rest of the guys in the band, during our festival tour last summer. Everybody liked the title The Living Infinite and also the idea of working towards the goal of releasing a double album. David Andersson was already playing with us last summer, so he has also been a part of this goal from the start. I feel very excited and proud that we’ve managed to find the inspiration and dedication it takes to create somewhat of a conceptual double album, especially since it’s dealing with a lot of existential questions.

"We would also like to reveal a brand new band shot by Hannah Verbeuren Photography. We are currently hard at work in the studio, putting this beast on tape. Things are sounding incredibly good so far. So excited about this and can’t wait to share the awesomeness with you all!"

SLAYER's NEW Album Will Be Recorded With Or Without Jeff Hanneman?

As previously reported, Bay Area Thrash Metallers SLAYER have two songs recorded for their next batch of NEW music.

SOILWORK's Björn "Speed" Strid: "Better sharpen your sledgehammers 'cause SOILWORK is back!"

Metaleros! We got some killer news from the SOILWORK camp! Read this statement by their vocalist Björn "Speed" Strid right now!

"It's been a pretty long time coming, but as we speak I'm sitting here smiling my ass off listening to the demos that will forge into 'The Living Infinite'. I've been feeling pretty damn restless from this break to be honest with you, therefore it is with great excitement that I've approached this NEW album. As soon as we started working on songs in March, all my focus and energy went into building this new beast. We're finished writing songs and I'm currently laying down demo vocals and I'm having a blast. I feel very inspired.

"Around the time that we released 'The Panic Broadcast', I moved into a house by the ocean in a tiny fisherman's village. The ocean has given me so much inspiration and raised a lot of existential questions, which will inspire a lot of the lyrics on 'The Living Infinite', the words Jacques Cousteau used to describe the ocean. Pretentious? Hell yes, but in the most typical SOILWORK manner, with the right intensity, dynamics and melodies to back it up and make it real. I can't wait to team up with the rest of the guys and start putting this album on tape, together with the amazing producer Jens Bogren!"

"It's almost time to start recording 'The Living Infinite' and I seriously can't wait," added drummer Dirk Verbeuren. "The new demos are super intense guitar-wise with tons of harmonies and typical SOILWORK-style riffs. I hear 'A Predator's Portrait' peppered with some 'The Panic Broadcast', a hint of 'Stabbing The Drama' and a bunch of new spices thrown in for good measure. We've all been writing and arranging like mad for the past few months, now we're about to get together in the ole rehearsal space to finish everything up. It's gonna be a hell of a ride folks, and it'll be captured in stereo by the mighty Jens Bogren. Better sharpen your sledgehammers 'cause SOILWORK is back!"

"Bon Scott - The Legend Of AC/DC" Docu-drama Announced - Details Available!

U.S. based production company High Voltage Productions are currently in the pre-production stages of a docu-drama entitled "Bon Scott - The Legend Of AC/DC". The film's screenplay is being written by American singer/writer Rob Liotti who has portrayed Bon Scott for a number of years in his tribute band TNT and has wowed thousands of AC/DC fans. This is why Liotti will be starring portraying the late Aussie frontman. One could equate his performance in similarity to what tribute singer Tim "Ripper" Owens did for JUDAS PRIEST.

The plot:

The docu-drama is said to examine an integral time period within AC/DC's history as Bon Scott helped to catapult AC/DC to international stardom, but never really got to enjoy the fruits of his labor — even sometimes dealing with bouts of extreme loneliness and isolationism — and ultimately culminating in his untimely death by misadventure in 1980.

What Rob Liotti had to say about being part of the project:

"There are a lot of challenges with a project of this type. One of the biggest challenges is authenticity. This is an American production of an ostensibly Australian-based story. Therefore, dialect is highly important, as well as capturing the true dynamic of the band and its members. Moreover, the Australians claim 'ownership' of the band and Bon Scott, so there are high expectations to be met from the outset. But it is a story that is viable and deserves to be told."

With AC/DC's 40th anniversary coming up and now annual events paying homage to the late Scott, millions of AC/DC fans worldwide are seething for a film of this type so that they might personally explore what has made AC/DC one of the most successful rock bands in history and their late singer an Australian icon. Stay tuned for more details!

As previously reported, AC/DC's guitarist Malcolm Young has an update about what is to be the bands NEW studio album! In an interview with Classic Rock magazine, Young had the following to say regarding AC/DC's follow-up to 2008's 'Black Ice'.

"You know what Brian's like. He just says things and then walks away," Malcolm said. "It'll be a little while — a year or two anyway." He added, "I've been doing some jamming on some song ideas but I do that all the time, as do the rest of the band. We are still working. But we had a long rest between 'Stiff Upper Lip' and 'Black Ice', so I think we need a couple of years to recuperate and work on it a bit more."

SLAYER's Kerry King: "Two new SLAYER tracks are done, but they're just not mixed"

Recently, MTV's "Alternative Nation" conducted an interview with Kerry King when SLAYER performed in Romania on June 4 in front of more than 3,000 people at Arenele Romane in Bucharest.

UPDATE on Jeff Hannemann:

"Jeff is… If you look at him, he looks fine. But playing the intricate things that we do, he's not ready to do that. He doesn't know if he has the stamina for an hour-and-fifteen-minute set. He can play any of the slower stuff and do it just like the record. But we made a name for ourselves, historically, for being good live, so we had to make the decision and say, 'You've gotta get better before you try to come back. If you come back, make it a special thing, not just an adequate thing.'"

NEW music:

"[The two new SLAYER tracks] are done, but they're just not mixed," he said. "It's [like], do you put them out now or do you just wait for the [full-length] record to be done [and include them as part of the final package]? We're gona finish the record September-October. So I, myself, would rather wait, because I don't like to put those two songs out and then include them on the record. In my thinking, if you put those two songs out, then make ten more songs and put those two on that album just as an afterthought. But I feel like I've gotta give people ten new songs. That's why on the last one [2009's 'World Painted Blood'] we did 11, 'cause 'Psychopathy Red' was already out. So [the two new songs are] done. We'll see what the record company proposes. I think they've been talking about an EP, which is kind of a throwback to the '80s, which is really cool, I think. But we'll just have to see."
