VAN HALEN: A 6-Year-Old Drummer Shreds Jamming To "Hot For Teacher"

This rocks! Avery Molek is a 6 year old boy who loves Rock music, and already is a pretty badass drummer. Get this: he has been taking drum lessons since he was 4. This week he uploaded a video of him jamming to VAN HALEN’s classic song "Hot For Teacher". You can now watch the video below.

In addition to doing covers, Avery has played 15 shows all at the age of 5. Six of the shows were solo one hour shows and nine shows were playing in four different live bands spanning in four states. That was what he calls his 2012 "Out Of The Basement" tour. "Yes, I said ‘Tour’! I am only 6! So anything more then one gig is a Tour!", says Avery. Most notable were The Hard Rock Cafe, The Illinois State Fair & Sturgis Fest “Bike Week” in Michigan.

VAN HALEN Update About Rescheduled Tour Dates & Upcoming Show In Asia!

As previously reported, VAN HALEN have postponed 31 dates on their 2012 North American tour. The postponed shows were to run from July 7 in Uncasville, CT through Sept. 25 in Milwaukee, WI. A list of upcoming tour dates can be seen below.

In a revealing NEW interview with USA Today, Edward and Wolfgang Van Halen had a lot to say. Here is an excerpt of what Marco R. della Cava (USA TODAY) compiled together for the Van Halen fans:

Edward and Wolfgang Van Halen. The names sound like owners of the old Dutch East India shipping company, or perhaps a couple of guys looking to put a stake through Dracula’s heart.

Eddie Van Halen, right, says about his son, Wolfgang, left, “He’s 21 years old, he doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t do drugs. What more could I ask for?” The father and son pair talk to USA TODAY about touring together.

So let’s go with what friends call them: Ed and Wolf. Guitar revolutionary and musical disciple. Father and son.

“Look at him,” says Dutch-born Ed, 57, staring straight into the slightly embarrassed eyes of an all-American Wolf. “He’s 21 years old, he doesn’t smoke, he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t do drugs. What more could I ask for? He’s never done a (expletive) thing wrong.

Wolf smiles shyly and returns the compliment when the two are asked about their musical heroes. Ed cites Eric Clapton. “For me, my inspiration was obviously … you,” Wolf says.

In a rare joint interview with USA TODAY, the two Van Halens recently took time between dates on the band’s “A Different Kind of Truth” tour to discuss their relationship in and out of music.

But the news of the moment is about that very tour being cut short after a New Orleans date on June 26.

So what gives? Ed is direct.

“We bit off more than we could chew,” he says. “This record took a lot out of us. And we went on tour earlier than we wanted to so we could play Madison Square Garden (in March, before a renovation), and that threw the schedule out of whack.”

The band will have completed more than 40 shows on this leg, and “a lot of the canceled dates were in cities we already played,” he says. “So in November we’ll hit Japan, and in the new year we’ll possibly do something special, but I can’t talk about it.”

But he will talk about singer David Lee Roth. Contrary to what has been reported, he says there’s no tour-nuking feud. “Dave’s the same as he’s always been, funny, witty,” Ed says. Then he laughs. “Sometimes I can only take that in small doses, because he just goes on and on.”

Wolfgang jumps in: “He’s like the Energizer Bunny— wind it up and see what happens.”

“But Dave always lands on his feet,” Ed says.

Van Halen quotables:

Moment of musical truth: Eddie Van Halen says when son Wolf was 10, “he was in the studio with us and I asked him to play a little bass. He goes ‘boom, ba-da boom, boom,’ and I go ‘You’re groovin’ great.’ He goes, ‘Really?’ Never been weird since.”

Father knows best: “As a kid, Wolf walked behind me, not in front,” says Ed. “So one day he was with his mom and I snatched him up from behind and ran. He cried, but I said, ‘Wolf, in two seconds you could be taken from me.’ He never did it again.”

Shared nightmare: “We got stuck on an amusement park ride recently,” Wolf says with a sigh. “Outdoor stuff I love, but this was dark and we’re strapped in,” Ed says. It only lasted five minutes, but Wolf says they were “in panic mode, it was awful.”

Guitar heroes’ heroes: So, who do Ed and Wolf Van Halen crank when they’re rocking out at home? “AC/DC,” says Wolf. “That’s our band.” Adds Ed: “It’s simple stuff, three chords, but so great. (Guitarist) Malcolm (Young) is the riff master.”

Ronnie Montrose: “What Made Eddie Van Halen Special Was His Youthful Irreverence For The Rules.”

Shortly before his death, the late, great Ronnie Montrose contributed to the upcoming hardcover photo book, Eddie Van Halen, by Neil Zlozower.

The Van Halen News Desk posted this exclusive blurb on the guitarist’s story of meeting Eddie Van Halen:

“The first tour I did with Van Halen, the bill was Journey, Ronnie Montrose, and Van Halen was opening. I was doing my instrumental music on that tour. Van Halen was a young, loud, and brash band, and I liked them. Eddie came up to me backstage at sound check and he called me Mr. Montrose. He shyly shook my hand and said, “Mr. Montrose, I’m Edward Van Halen, and I’m a big fan. We told Ted Templeman to get the Montrose sound when we did our record.” He also told me they used to play “Dancin’ Feet” from one of the Montrose albums at their yard parties in Pasadena.

“I really enjoyed Eddie’s playing. What made Eddie special was his youthful irreverence for the rules. That’s what impressed me. He’d developed his own style. I think Eddie started out on drums first, and there’s a very percussive nature about the way he plays. He plays very metered and percussive, and he’s very fluid in that style.”

-Ronnie Montrose

VAN HALEN Premiere Music Video For "She's The Woman"!

Good Friday headbangers, below Van Halen are premiering the second single off their NEW album, 'A Different Kind of Truth', rolling out the single and video for “She’s The Woman.”

A fun and nasty rocker with a synchronized guitar/bass intro that nearly knocks you cold, “She’s The Woman” is an instant reminder that Van Halen can still work the heavy bag. This tune is one of six NEW songs that originated from older material from the seventies and is one of the most prototypical VH songs on the album. The driving riff is a cross between “Mean Street” and “Outta Love Again” and could have easily found a comfortable home on any early DLR-era material.

“A Different Kind of Truth,” (released Feb. 7th), marks the first original Van Halen studio album with Roth on the mic since “1984.” Read our review here. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers are on tour through the end of June. Gear up for the show with great Van Halen apparel at www.VanHalenStore.com.

WOLFGANG VAN HALEN Joins The D’ADDARIO Artist Roster!

D’Addario is thrilled to announce that VAN HALEN bassist, Wolfgang Van Halen, has joined the D’Addario artist roster.

As the bassist for VAN HALEN, one of the most wildly successful Rock bands of all time, Wolfgang’s musical prowess shines on the band’s latest album, 'A Different Kind of Truth' and its current tour. Wolfgang has been a part of his father’s vision for the legendary band for some time, with the instrumental “316” being named in his honor, after Wolfgang’s birthday. Later, his father named a custom guitar after him, the EVH Wolfgang.

Wolfgang began actively playing with the band in 2004 making guest appearances during VAN HALEN’s tour that year, appearing during his father’s extended guitar solo spot and performing the song “316” with him. Wolfgang made his full concert debut with VAN HALEN in September 2007. Like his father and uncle, drummer Alex Van Halen, Wolfgang is a multi-instrumentalist; in addition to bass, he also plays drums, guitar, keyboards and handles a heavy work load of vocal harmonies to the band that bears his name.

Wolfgang, who uses D’Addario EXL165 Nickel Wound Bass Custom Light Bass Strings and D’Addario ENR71 Half Round Regular Light Bass Strings, says, “The consistency, feel, tone and quality of my D’addario strings are why they’re my choice. Nobody makes a better string.”

“Wolfgang is an extremely talented and versatile musician,” says Marco Soccoli, Director of Artist Relations. “We are thrilled to be part of his musical journey, and we’re very proud and honored to have him join our family of artists!”

VAN HALEN Prove That The Old School Rock Mentality Will Always DOMINATE!

FROM VAN HALEN's NEWS DESK:

A grinning David Lee Roth stood at center stage at Madison Square Garden, his red handkerchief aflutter. He was the matador and guitarist Eddie Van Halen was the raging bull. Moments later, he was peering over Eddie’s shoulder as if he were a schoolroom cheat and the answers to the science test were printed on Van Halen’s fretboard. Then he spun away, hands in the air, as proud as a parent with a prize-winning son.

Roth perfected this dance in the early ’80s. For almost a quarter-century, he didn’t get to do it: He left Van Halen for a solo career in 1985 and the group carried on without him. But he is now back, and the latest Van Halen tour, timed to support “A Different Kind of Truth” — the band’s first album with Roth in decades — is suffused with the joy of a thing put right. Diamond Dave is back where he belongs, and when he asked the capacity crowd to exercise some selective amnesia, they were happy to comply.

In the years following Roth’s departure, the band continued churning out hits. None were in Tuesday’s set. Instead, the band charged gleefully through nearly two hours of selections from its first six albums, with a sprinkling of material from “Truth.” The new songs, built from demos left over from early sessions, fit in fine alongside hard rock evergreens like “Running With the Devil,” “Unchained” and “Beautiful Girls.” Even “Tattoo,” the rote new single, sprang to life. The pulverizing “China Town,” another platform for Eddie Van Halen’s fantasia, was a concert highlight marred only by Roth’s silly pantomime of a servile Asian stereotype.

Roth, 56, is a bit like grenadine: sticky and syrupy, and certainly not something you’d want to consume straight. But he can make an intoxicating mixture brighter and sweeter. The prancing, hyperactive lead singer was born for the stage — had he not become a hard rock frontman, he would have made an outstanding circus clown. His greatest talent, however, is coaxing the best out of musicians with the Van Halen surname. At the Garden, there were three of them: the sorcerous Eddie, 57; his brother Alex, 58, a drummer of tremendous power and precision; and Eddie’s capable son Wolfgang, 20, who has taken over for Michael Anthony as the group’s bassist. Like many long-running firms, Van Halen has become a family business, with Roth as the hired CEO giving the concern with its public face and pushing the team to choose risk over complacency.

Eddie Van Halen remains one of the miraculous musicians of the past 40 years. Much of what he can accomplish with a six-string defies explanation. Not only can he switch between rhythm and lead parts so deftly that it seems like he’s playing both simultaneously, he can simulate the sound of a classical string section, a forest full of insects and tree frogs, or a helicopter crash. His instrument sounds like it was strung with live wires — if it started smoking or shooting off sparks as he played, no one would be surprised. His style has been imitated by so many hard rockers, it’s amazing he still has the capacity to astonish. But astonish he does and he does it effortlessly, with an imaginative faculty that never takes a measure off.

“Eruption,” the exercise in fretboard-tapping that has become a metal cliché rehashed by a thousand guitar-store clerks, was a revelation in the hands of its originator on Tuesday. Most hard rock guitar solos are indulgent. Eddie’s could have gone on for twice as long and nobody would have minded.

With his black clothing and slightly disaffected stance, Wolfgang looks like an alt-rocker, but he discharged Anthony’s parts — and the high backing vocals that are an underappreciated component of the Van Halen sound — with confidence and a few pleasing embellishments of his own.

Alex is nearly as imitated as his famous brother. As inspiring as the frenetic double-bass part on “Hot for Teacher” or the menacing rolls on “Ain’t Talkin’ ’Bout Love” are on record, watching Alex hammer out those beats in concert is a deeper pleasure.

As for Roth, his voice is not the supple instrument it once was. His performance of “Jump” was mostly an enthusiastic guess. But even in his prime, Roth was never the most accurate or mellifluous singer.

He made up for his deficiencies with his sense of humor, his theatrical style and his perpetual delight. Those were always crucial parts of Van Halen’s personality and kept the band from falling into the self-serious trap that ensnared many of its peers.

Time has not dented Roth’s showmanship, although the years have softened his stance. In the ’80s, he was a font of sexuality and danger; these days, he’s more goofy than salacious. It didn’t matter much: Van Halen was Van Halen again, and that was a gift that only Roth could give.

It wasn’t his only gift. Roth enlisted Kool and the Gang to open the show. On paper, this was a head-scratcher: What did the Jersey City funk-pop stalwarts have to do with Van Halen?

More than a bit, as it turned out. Roth, frontman of a great party band, recognizes another great party band when he sees it. In a 50-minute opening set, the 11-piece combo swept through 30 years of music history, encompassing hard-grooving disco-soul (“Ladies Night”), raw funk (“Jungle Boogie”), cheesy but wonderful ’80s dance classics (“Celebration”), guitar rock (“Misled”) and even a little hip-hop. Some Van Halen fans were skeptical at first, but by the time Robert “Kool” Bell locked into the bass strut on “Hollywood Shuffle,” they were swaying in their seats. By “Get Down on It,” many were dancing.

THE OLD SCHOOL WILL NEVER DAY! THANK YOU VAN HALEN!!!

VAN HALEN's NEW album, 'A Different Kind of Truth', was released this past Tuesday (February 7) via Interscope Records.
