In not very surprising news, SOULFLY have parted ways with their longtime record label/home Roadrunner Records and have signed a NEW deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment. This label move is the perfect and obvious one for SOULFLY as Nuclear Blast Entertainment is headed by former Roadrunner Senior VP of A&R, Monte Conner and Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger.
Later this month, SOULFLY will be entering the recording studio with producer legendary producer Terry Date (Pantera, Deftones).
"I’m really excited to be signing Soulfly to Nuclear Blast Records. On top of it, we’re going to be reunited with Monte Conner who I’ve worked with for over 20 years at Roadrunner. Soulfly‘s new album is going to be recorded in Seattle with the great producer Terry Date, and it’s going to come out later in the year through Nuclear Blast worldwide. Keep it metal!" - Max Cavalera "It feels so right to be reunited with Max Cavalera. He is the second artist I signed and we’ve made 17 albums together over the years, including several metal classics. Max‘s voice remains just as unique and powerful as the day I met him and I felt the last Soulfly album Enslaved was his strongest work since the band’s Gold-selling debut. I am honored to call him a friend and to continue to be a part of his mission." - Monte Conner (pictured above)
Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing his musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional. Max left SEPULTURA in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Cavalera Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as SEPULTURA's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max has proven with SOULFLY that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists. Get this, SOULFLY turns 16 years old this year and have eight studio albums under their musical belt and are already working on album # 9, which will be produced by Terry Date! Additionally, Cavalera has a NEW supergroup that features Greg Puciato from THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, Troy Sanders from MASTODON and David Elitch, former member of THE MARS VOLTA. On Thursday, March 14, we met up with Max at his hotel room in New York City before the "MAXIMUM CAVALERA Tour" show at The Gramercy Theatre. This is part II of our in-depth interview with "El Patrón Del Metal", Max Cavalera! On part II we discuss SOULFLY's past, present and future. Additionally, we discuss the formation of SEPULTURA and Max made it very clear that his passion for Metal will keep him making music for many years to come. Check it out!

Wow, we are very glad to hear that the members of the SOULFLY tribe are fine, following a very scary situation while flying back from Japan to the United States via airplane. The band wrapped up their Asian tour last night (October 23) at the Hollywood Awards in Bangkok, Thailand, which served as drummer David Kinkade's (formerly of BORKNAGAR, ARSIS and MALEVOLENT
CREATION) final show as a member of SOULFLY. Kinkade announced last week that he is retiring from music. Read his statement HERE!
Here is a statement from the bands manager Gloria Cavalera (Max's wife) regarding this near death experience:
"I just want to say thank you God for keeping us on this blessed Earth!! As we were leaving Tokyo's Narita Airport this afternoon, the auxiliary engine, which does many things... one of them is send the air into the aircraft's engines to keep them running, overheated and shut off. If it would have happened 20 minutes later, we would most likely be at the bottom of the ocean, with divers looking for the black box!! Luckily, it shut down before we lifted off, and here we all are, in a hotel fbing (Facebooking)!!! Thanks God, for sparing us all and not letting the Grim Reaper collect his debt!!!"
We are very happy to hear that the members of the SOULFLY tribe are OK! Please don't forget to count your blessings! \m/
Drummer David Kinkade (formerly of BORKNAGAR, ARSIS and MALEVOLENT CREATION) will play his final show as a member of SOULFLY on October 23 at the Hollywood Awards in Bangkok, Thailand.
In a series of postings on his Facebook page, Kinkade stated about his decision to leave the band: "I decided two months ago that music is no longer worth the effort to me anymore. After this, I'm going to retire from drumming and music all together and focus on my family rather than myself.
"I've fought my hardest for 'my dream' in music over the past 10 years and failed. [Playing with BORKNAGAR in] Norway was the pinnacle of mistakes and I'll never let myself off the hook for it. I moved across the world for music, spent hundreds of thousands of $$$ and in the end I ended up digging myself into a deeper hole than before. I'm still trying to recover from that fuck-up.
"The only bit of light that my career ever saw was in the end, I was able to make a record and play some huge shows with a guy [SOULFLY/ex-SEPULTURA frontman Max Cavalera] whose music I grew up idolizing. Thats good enough for me."
He added, "I've always been an all-or-nothing kinda guy. I could never be the guy loading bags onto the plane, I'd have to be the pilot.
"I'm thankful for the real friends I've made, which are very few and far between, trust me, and, of course, the good experiences, but it's time.
"Music doesn't have a 401K plan, insurance, anything that I can count on in the end to support my family, and that scares me. I can't just crawl back to my mom's couch anymore if I drop the ball. I have people depending on me to provide, so I'd rather not be selfish anymore and focus on the real rather than a dream.
"A bunch of you say I'll miss it and I'll be back. You don't understand that this whole business has ruined any sort of want or will for me to continue on. I've done it and it's not glamorous or anything that anyone seems to think it is.
"I'm not a rock star or anything near it. So what if I was the drummer of SOULFLY and played huge festivals. I'm a hired gun and always have been just a hired gun... I'm just a hired gun who was luckier than most to have worked my way up the food chain a bit further than others. The fact is that I've tasted it all now and want nothing to do with the entire dish anymore.
"I don't enjoy playing drums anymore, shows or anything to do with it. I just want to be home with my family. My fiancée, the kids, my Mom, Grandpa. Those are the only people who mean something to me.
"I'm only here finishing the tour because I don't want to fuck anyone over. I have no desire to sit on a plane for 12 hours to Malaysia and trek around Asia for the next week dragging gear all over. I'd rather be at home fixing Mom's Malibu Lights LOL. I'm just thankful that I made the decision at 29 rather than 39.
"I'm done."
Kinkade's final shows with SOULFLY:
Oct. 20 - Rockaway 2012 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Oct. 21 - Lampangan D Senayan - Jakarta, Indonesia
Oct. 23 - Hollywood Awards - Huai Khwaeng, Thailand
Today (August 2nd), Max Cavalera's SOULFLY will be headlining the 16th annual D-Low Memorial Festival at the Marquee Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona. Also appearing on the bill will be Incite and Lody Kong (both bands feature Max's sons) and Cattle Decapitation!
The D-Low Memorial Festival is an annual event held in memory of Dana Wells (Max Cavalera's stepson), who was killed after the release of Sepultura's "Roots" in 1996. In 2004, the band recorded part of their 'The Song Remains Insane' DVD at the show. Here is what Gloria Cavalera (Dana's mother and Max's wife) posted on her Facebook page regarding the 16th anniversary of her sons death:
"16 years without one of your children is a long struggle. Sure, you get used to it and begin to smile again, but there is always a lion sleeping in your soul. He wakes up on holidays, during your dreams, or even driving by a landmark of a happier moment. It takes all you have got to put him back to sleep.
"If you go to the Phoenix New Times site and pull up an article from 1998 titled 'For Reasons Unknown', you will find an article written by David Holthaus. He was an investigative reporter back in the day who did an independent investigation on Dana's strange death. At the end, you will find a post which posted last year on the night of the 15th DLOW show day. It is written by the boy who drove the car that swerved Dana off the road. Its quite rude comical and full of statements that are not facts. He plead the 5th on all questions at his depositions, refused all requests for a lie detector test and states facts about Dana's drinking etc. that are false, as proven by affidavits and witness testimony. Dana did not have high alcohol content in his blood and was not hopped up on drugs, contrary to the statements made in the rant. I found it especially interesting that this boy/man posted this piece on the night of the Dlow show. You can check it out for yourself HERE.
"Maybe you will smell the same odor I got when I read it Max wrote 'Bleed', 'Pain', 'Tree of Pain',
'First Commandment', 'Revengance', 'In Memory Of', 'Wings', and many other tracks to express the misery our family has gone through because of that one instant, 16 years ago. It was a time also of 'No Hope, No Fear'.
"Thanks to all of you who helped us, and softened the blow dealt to our family. You helped us through a tragic, hopeless time. 'Walking Through This World, Youv'e Got to Hold Your Head up High!!!' I would also like to shout out an extra special thanks to the Deftones who respected their friend, Dana, in life and also after his death. Soul Fly, Fly Free!!! Peace."

As previously reported, SOULFLY will be performing at the 2012 "Gathering of the Juggalos", to be held August 8-12 in Cave-in-Rock, Illinois, where it's been the last few years. The event has been gaining mainstream media attention and getting larger and larger each year, with its organizers, Insane Clown Posse, welcoming hip-hop, Hard Rock and Metal performers, professional wrestlers, and comedians to the event's multiple stages, including everyone from Ice Cube, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, and Method Man and Redman to GWAR and Charlie Sheen. And now, SOULFLY will be the first Roadrunner Records artist to play for the notoriously volatile juggalo audience, who shower performers with love (and Faygo soda) if they like them and hurl bottles if they don't. Here is what Max Cavalera had to say about this unique opportunity:
Says frontman Max Cavalera, "It's a challenge and at the same time it's an honor that they specifically asked for SOULFLY to play at the festival. We're gonna give our best show possible and we're going to fuck shit up at the Gathering of the Juggalos".

Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing mis musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty SEPULTURA that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.
Thankfully, Max has also served as a mentor to his musician sons Richie, Igor and Zyon. While the Cavalera's are not the only Metal family in the Heavy Music world, they are the only family in the Metal world that have shared a nationwide tour in which Max's SOULFLY was supported by INCITE (Richie's band) and LODY KONG (Igor and Zyon's band).
The "Maximum Cavalera Tour" recently wrapped up, and all who attended really enjoyed seeing the Cavalera clan in full force! And we can't forget Max's soul mate Gloria. Gloria has not only been Max's backbone in all of his musical projects, but she has also taught her sons that a strong work ethic and humbleness, will help them achieve their goals while keeping the Cavalera legacy intact!
We recently had the chance to chat with Max and his sons about the "Maximum Cavalera Tour", and how life on the road as a family has made them a stronger family. We also talked with them about Max's involvement in their son's musical careers and how he is making sure that they are learning the business with little to no guidance. Check this exclusive interview out with the Cavalera's, the real Metal familia!

Get this, SOULFLY turns 15 years old this year and have eight studio albums under their musical belt!
With the release of SOULFLY's eighth studio album 'Enslaved', Max has created one of the heaviest records of his career. Thanks to his decision to add NEW members Tony Campos (ex-Static X, Prong Ministry, Posessed, Asesino) and David Kinkade (Borknagar, Arsis), SOULFLY has created a contender for album of the year! If you haven't seen the current incarnation of SOULFLY live, you must!
Recently, we met up with Max at his hotel room in New York City before the "MAXIMUM CAVALERA Tour" show at The Gramercy Theatre. Once the camera was rolling, we chatted with him about growing up in Brazil and how this influenced his musical career. We also discussed the response of the public thus far to the current killer lineup and SOULFLY's NEW album 'Enslaved'. Additionally, we discussed what it means to Max having his kids bands INCITE and LODY KONG open up the show for him and how it feels to have his brother Iggor back in his life. And of course we asked him about a potential SEPULTURA reunion and about the change in guard at his long time record label: ROADRUNNER RECORDS! Check out what Max had to say about all of this!
And hey, there is no question that Max has plenty of musical fire left to burn for years to come and that the Cavalera's reign in Heavy Music will carry on for years to come.
SOULFLY with INCITE, LODY KONG and WYKKED WYTCH (Remaining Tour Dates):

Max Cavalera's reach for musical horizons that have never been reached before is what has established him as one of the most influential Heavy Music musicians of all time. And now his kids are following his footsteps! The "Maximum Cavalera" tour is in full effect, and for the first time ever the fans are getting the chance to see Max's kids with their bands INCITE (Richard Cavalera's band) and LODY KONG (Zyon & Igor Cavalera's band)!
This Friday, the "Maximum Cavalera" tour visited the city that never stops rocking! Apart from the Cavalera clan, the show featured performances from WYKKED WYTCH and our friends from IRATETION. Here is our recap of this great show!
Usually when you have an early show (this one started at 5:40) the venue is pretty much empty. Well, this time around New Jersey badass Metallers IRATETION made sure that this wasn't the case. Ever since we came across IRATETION, we knew that their energetic music would transmit beautifully on a big venue with a proper sound system. This was definitely the case!
Following IRATETION, were Miami's own WYKKED WYTCH! If you think Miami, Florida has no place in Heavy Music think again. Not only did they deliver a perfect blend of Blackened Death Metal a la GOATWHORE, but they get the crowd moving thanks to Ipek's great presence and energy!
IGOR CAVALERA (Lody Kong)
Next it was time for the first Cavalera's to hit center stage and prove why the Cavalera legacy is not to be messed with. While LODY KONG still needs some work within their musical craft, the energy of the band reminded us of THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN! While Igor Cavalera has an air to NIRVANA's Kurt Cobain, his vocal style is scream based and not harmony based. And hey, Zyon Cavalera's drumming proves that he has uncle Igor's drumming DNA!
RICHIE CAVALERA (Incite)
Around 7:45 PM, Richie Cavalera's INCITE took center stage and demonstrated that they have been working hard on their stage show. It is very cool to see Richie come to his own, but its not surprising to see him exhaling out of control. Richie is the blonde kid that used to join SOULFLY on stage while the band was touring all over the world. The energy presented by INCITE warmed the crowd up for the SOULFLY tribe!
MAX CAVALERA (Soulfly)
Once the SOULFLY tribe took over New York City, nobody was safe! While
the band made sure that they presented the crowd a lot of NEW songs from
their damaging album entitled 'Enslaved', we really liked how they
mixed in classic SOULFLY and SEPULTURA songs. We can honestly say that
Max Cavalera and company know that they needed to prove that the
students (INCITE, LODY KONG, WYKKED WYTCH & IRATETION) can still
learn from one of the best lineups in Heavy Music today!

Note after note, beat after beat, song after song. Soulfly's eighth studio album 'Enslaved' is one of Max's heaviest records to date. Thanks to his decision to add NEW members Tony Campos (ex-Static X, Prong Ministry, Posessed, Asesino) and David Kinkade (Borknagar, Arsis), who are complimented by shredder Marc Rizzo (Cavalera Conspiracy, ex-Ill Niño), Soulfly has created a contender for album of the year!

Max left Sepultura in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as Sepultura's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max proved with Soulfly that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists.
Recently, we had the chance to chat with Max about Soulfly's NEW album 'Enslaved', his musical legacy, working with his kids on the NEW album, Soulfly's upcoming touring plans, rejoining forces with his brother Iggor Cavalera (with whom he invented Cavalera Conspiracy), and the possibility of a Sepultura reunion. Check out what Max had to say about all of this!
And hey, there is no question that Max has plenty of musical fire left to burn for years to come and that the Cavalera's reign in Heavy Music will carry on for years to come.
