And The BEST Guitarist Of All Time Is __________________!
After nearly half a million total votes were cast, Eddie Van Halen has been named the victor in Guitar World‘s first-ever Greatest Guitarist of All Time poll.
The tournament-style readers poll began in April with 132 guitarists, including four — Malcolm Young, Nuno Bettencourt, Jake E. Lee and Chet Atkins — who were voted in by readers.
In the final matchup, which took place Monday and Tuesday, Van Halen faced off against an unlikely opponent in Queen’s Brian May, pulling a hefty 62.48 percent of the votes to claim a decisive win over the upset-happy May. May had previously knocked off a who’s-who of guitar greats on his way to the finals, with his signature tone, academic chops and a rabid Queen fanbase taking him past Jeff Beck, George Harrison, Les Paul, Jimmy Page and Jimi Hendrix.
King Edward — a 21-time Guitar World cover star — had no easy run to the finals either, running up against legends like Slash, Joe Satriani and Randy Rhoads along the way. When Rhoads and Van Halen met in Round 4, they were the two biggest vote-getters of the tournament, with Rhoads actually ahead in overall vote count leading into the match.
The Finals matchup between Van Halen and May received 27,179 votes over the course of a day and a half, bolstered by active social media teams and fan communities on both sides.
You can check out the complete bracket HERE, and a ranking of your top 100 guitarists of all time HERE.

NEW Song From The Cory Smoot Experiment Streaming Now!
THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT was recorded in 2010 at CORY's Karma Studios, where GWAR, Municipal Waste, and many others have laid down tracks. The songs were originally meant for a concept album called 'Religion is Fiction'. CORY was going to lay down all the tracks and then get some of his favorite singers from the internationally-acclaimed Richmond Metal scene to do the vocals, including GWAR lead singer Dave Brockie and Lamb of God's Randy Blythe. Unfortunately this didn't happen due to scheduling problems but that didn't mean the end of the project. CORY went ahead and recorded the vocals himself and re-named the project THE CORY SMOOT EXPERIMENT, completing the entire package just before his final tour with GWAR in the fall of 2011.
Today GuitarWorld.com the online home of Guitar World Magazine is hosting an exclusive premiere of a track from When Worlds Collide. Get a first listen to the song "Mutilated" at the link below.
After his passing, GWAR and Metal Blade set up the Smoot Family Fund to help provide for Cory's family. All proceeds from this album will be donated to this fund.
Metal Blade Records Chairman and CEO Brian Slagel commented on the album's release:
"Metal Blade Records is donating all the proceeds of the Cory Smoot solo album to the Smoot family. Please help us by getting the CD and enjoying the immense talent he was."
Dave Brockie, a.k.a. Odrus Urungus, lead singer of GWAR shared his memories of CORY.
"CORY SMOOT is one of the great unsung heroes of Metal. His musical abilities transformed GWAR from a splatter-thrash phenomena into a top Metal act. And though he may have left us way too early, he left us a lifetime of music to listen to. He tore it up like few others, and will always be remembered as the true Flattus Maximus. We really loved the man, and there is not a day that goes by or a GWAR show that is played where he is not sorely missed"
'When Worlds Collide' Track Listing:
1. The Blood Red
2. Fortunate Son
3. Religion is Fiction
4. Rebirth
5. Brainfade
6. Mandatory Purgatory
7. Countdown to Oblivion
8. The Gauntlet
9. When Worlds Collide
10. Mutilation
11. Hollow Tree
12. Sloth Loves Chunk

comments: "We wanted to really include a chaotic visual to reflect
the chaotic sound of the band, but we also wanted to show that the
lyrics on this album are a lot more introverted... The human face was
left non-descript on purpose-- it doesn't belong to any particular
person, but we could call him the Lonely Solipsist."
The track-listing for 'Prisoners' is below.
1. You're Coming With Me
2. The Escape
3. Predator & Prayer
4. Anxious Darwinians
5. Panophobia
6. Ideomotor

NYC Metallers HUNG To Demolish NEW ENGLAND Today!
New York City badasses HUNG are warming up as we speak for their second appearance at the NEW ENGLAND METAL AND HARDCORE FESTIVAL! Last year they appeared on the second stage... today at 2 PM they are ROCKING the MAIN STAGE!!!
In case you haven't heard their EPIC music: HUNG and Guitar World teamed up for the world premiere of "Progeny" off the upcoming self-titled debut out May 8th 2012 courtesy of The End Records and Chris Adler from Lamb of God’s label ReThink Records. The debut album features 10 punishing and sonically aesthetic tracks engineered and produced by Andy Abel and Lyris Hung at Abel Studios in Connecticut, with vocals tracked and produced by Ryan Kelly at MSR Studios and Nova Studios in New York City. Listen to "Progeny" below, courtesy of Guitar World.
HUNG violinist Lyris Hung says about "Progeny": “The song 'Progeny' is one of HUNG's most sonically diverse pieces, and one that shows off some of our most lyrical material. It's one of my personal favorites because it travels through many different musical landscapes… My approach to the violin lines are more traditional in a 'violinistic' way, allowing the instrument to take a lot of sweeping parts above the rest of the band and even the rhythm violin parts tend to be integrated with melody.”
HUNG is a five piece Metal band from New York City featuring Lyris Hung (Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Bryan Adams) on violin, ‘Evil’ Jon Clark on guitar, bassist Sam Roon, drummer Kenny Grohowski and singer Dmitry Kostitsyn.

SIX FEET UNDER Premieres NEW Track Called "18 Days" - Listen Now!
Today Guitar World is hosting an exclusive premiere of “18 Days,” the second official single from Death Metal tyrants SIX FEET UNDER. The track comes off the band’s soon-to-be disengaged 'Undead' full-length scheduled for North American release on May 22, 2012 through Metal Blade Records. Offering up 12 tracks of uncompromising, sonic brutality, the record was produced by Mark Lewis (Deicide, Devildriver) and mixed by Jason Suecof (Whitechapel, Job For A Cowboy), at Audio Hammer Studios in Sanford, Florida.
Commented vocalist Chris Barnes: “Creating an album is a lot of work and a lot of focus, but we didn’t really have too many hiccups in the recording. It went really smooth, and it was pretty much the most effortless album we’ve ever tracked. I had a great, great time working on this album; it was so much fun because everything seemed so NEW again.”
Feast your ears on “18 Days” at THIS LOCATION.
Now featuring Barnes, possessor of one of the most dominating voices of the Death Metal genre, alongside guitarist Rob Arnold (ex- Chimaira), longtime guitarist Steve Swanson (ex-Massacre), bassist Jeff Hughell (ex-Brain Drill, ex-Vile), and drummer Kevin Talley (Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Chimaira), SIX FEET UNDER 2012 finds the band recharged and churning out some of the most severe, thought-provoking and downright horrific tunes of their epic discography.
In conjunction with the release of 'Undead', SIX FEET UNDER will embark upon a near three-week run of live rituals this June. Dubbed the "18 Nights Of Blood Tour", the beatings will begin in Atlanta, Georgia on June 8 and ravage its way across the country before coming to a close on June 29 in Tampa, Florida. Support will be provided by Dying Fetus and Revocation. A list of tour dates can be seen below.
