A SEVERED Warning!

A couple of weeks ago, we joined the Severed famila in Staten Island for a memorable video shoot/pool party/summer bash! The event was hosted by Severed's bassist John Effin Wiley (also CEO of 2 Legit Bookings), and no actors were needed. Severed's loyal fan base came from all over the tri-state area for a true summer party. The band has always been about uniting people through their music, and witnessing this first hand at the Severed shows has always been a blast. Now you get to witness what the Severed experience is all about, here is the video for their song "My Warning"! You have been WARNED! \m/

No Mercy Metal Showcase # 2

On Saturday July 24th we headed to Santos Party House in Manhattan, for the second edition of the No Mercy Metal Showcase. We arrived early at the venue, and the anticipation could be sensed in the air. The bands were loading their gear, the promoters were making last minute adjustments, and the fans were waiting outside patiently. As soon as we arrived we ran into the guys from Severed, and the From Bliss to Devastation crew. Once the doors opened, the attendees didn't waste anytime and started pacing around the dance floor.

Once the music started being cranked through the PA by DJ Tim No 37, the audience put the word party into Santos Party House. Since the show was all ages, the crowd was a mix between young teenagers and young adults. We think it is very important to bring the young crowd in, in order to have them become part of the scene at a young age. Events like this might inspire them to start their own musical projects and this is very beneficial to the entire scene.

The night kicked off with We Fall As Heroes from Queens, a band that we have seen live numerous times and who make it evident that there are a few young up and coming bands with plenty of talent within the tri-state area. Following this energetic band, were Long Island's From Bliss to Devastation. A band we interviewed when they opened for the legendary Hardcore band Earthcrisis at The Gramercy. Their performances are always filled with fury and passion, and their music is very original. This elements will take this guys real far as long as they remain true to their craft.

Then it was time for the surprise of the night: Letchworth from Albany. As soon as they stepped on stage everyone started grooving to their perfect blend of heavy crunchy guitars, groovy bass and tight drum beats. Once the singer pitched in, it was refreshing to listen to a Hardcore Metal band that wasn't afraid of rapping over heavy music and then taking their music to a guttural level. The band even brought some cheerleaders, that made sure no one was standing still. We are cooking up a special on this band, because their story of perseverance is one that we must share with all of you.

Next up was Eyes of The Sun from Brooklyn, these guys brought in a unique moody sound to the night. The crowd enjoyed their set even though they sounded very different than the rest of the bands, which truly defines a music showcase. Once the crowd got doomed, it was time for Embrace Agony from New York. This band punished the entire audience with some brutal music, and then forgave them with some harmonic parts that were very well blended in.

Headlining the No Mercy Metal Showcase was the mighty Severed from New York. We have been following this band for the last 5 months and they are clearly one of the best Heavy Metal bands in the tri-state area. From all the times we have seen them live, this show stands out because simply put: they destroyed Santos Party House! They sounded very tight and heavy as usual, but the highlight was Christian Geraldino's (singer) interaction with the crowd. He had full control of the crowd and the attendees loved it!

The second edition of the No Mercy Metal Showcase was a complete success, and every band did a great job! We want to thank the great people from Gotham Rocks, Tech 9 Music and Tim No 37, for understanding the need of such an event! We are very proud to be part of this movement and hope that other cities get inspired to organize events likes this one.

SEVERED - CD Review & invitation to crush!

The band Severed from New York City is a band that needs to be carefully watched by the heavy music fans. From the circle of bands that are exhaling from the New York tri-state area, Severed stands out because of their determination and flawless display of Metal Core! On their new self titled album, which was recorded and mixed by John Machado at Five Towns College. The Severed boys keep it crushing, fresh and senseful. In my opinion, a record that is way ahead of its time. And any record label out there that doesn't see this, is focused on the wrong musical ideals.

Severed is composed of Christian Geraldino on Vocals, Justin Whang & Shane Sorbello on Guitars, John Wiley on Bass and drummer Jorge Sosa. On their new self titled album, Severed takes the listener through a journey of crushing vocals cooked to perfection with a pefect blend of melodic ingredients. The lyrics are very well thought-out and Christian is easy to understand even when screaming his lungs out! The guitar work from Justin and Shane is crushlodic, they combine some heavy riffs with some harmonies a la Swedish Metal. And you can't forget about the rhythm section, both John and Jorge groove the hell out every song. The album contains nine songs that together make this a great record. How do I define a great record? When I spin it over and over again, without skipping a single song.

Here is an exclusive live video presented to you by Horns Up Rocks:

Sunday SEVEREDness with Heart Beat Still

On Sunday March 14th 2010, Horns Up Rocks joined hundreds of rockers over at Club Europa in Brooklyn, to witness the video shoot of New York's SEVERED! The video was shot for their song "A Better Way". I had completely forgotten about this event since I was out of it that entire weekend, but good ol' Facebook reminded me. It's amazing how lazy we all became thanks to the internet. The night was packed with great bands, great people and plenty of booze! It was a "New York Raging 101" type of night.

I got their early since I wanted to catch all the bands, so I could write a kick ass article for all of you to enjoy. The first band that played was A Striking Resemblance who managed to warm the crowd up by playing a decent. Next up was Heart Beats Still from Queens; the band possesses a perfect blend of Heavy Metal and New York Hard Core. As soon as they got on stage they where ready to scream and jam their heads off! After a few songs I recognized their lead singer Mike because of his chaotic display of vocal power. Mike and I had met many years ago in Queens at a rehearsal of his previous band. It's always cool when music brings people together. Mike is a very outgoing guy with a lot to say and always manages to insult people with respect. Makes no sense? Check the ROCKAST out and you might figure him out. And since music speaks louder than words, especially Heavy Music! We threw in some of their songs for all of you to enjoy!

The next band up was The Wrath of Hera who played some nasty Grind Core and touched on a lot of explicit themes. They definitely enjoyed pushing the envelope and made a few of us laugh at their antics. As the night progressed the crowd was getting rowdy, Horns Up Rocks was backstage and it was a rager! Once Until Ashes and Empyreon finished their killer sets, the crowd was getting anxious to see Severed. Why? Let me tell you about Severed.

Severed is one of the bands in New York that is raising the flag of New York Metal high up in the air. Their music is well thought crushing heaviness, combined with some melodies a la Swedish Metal. As soon as Severed got on stage the crowd went nuts, the pit erupted and Club Europa was jumping up and down. Oh, there was also a dude break-dancing in the middle of the circle pit. We will have some video up of that night real soon on the “Horns Up Eye” You Tube channel.

After a few songs crushed all our ear drums, some unnecessary drama almost ruined the night for some of us. All of a sudden this dude is getting on some girls faces. I have no idea what went down that caused this dude to erupt at these young girls. But a MAN must never harass or touch a woman aggressively, regardless of what the situation is. As soon as I saw this I got in front of the girls and calmed them down, he also mellowed out for a second.

Then he comes back to continue harassing them and one of the girls started crying. Thanks to this dude who can't control his drinking, some of us lost sight for a couple of minutes of the madness Severed was displaying on stage. So I go to try to talk some sense into the guy, I tell him: "Fight anyone you want, but not a girl!" He just looked at me pissed off, but I wasn't scared at all. I was born and raised in Colombia during the most dangerous era, so he had no impact on me no matter how tough he looked.

All of a sudden since he sees that I am not reacting to his cowardliness, he pushes me towards the girls. I grab him as I am falling so he wouldn't hit the girls, he falls too and security shuffles him out of the venue. Here is some advice to all of you out there: if you are going drink to lose control, stay home and lose control by yourself, don't ruin other peoples nights just because you can't control your own addictions.

Once the drama was kicked out of the door, the focus was back on Severed. Once Severed completed their furious set, the crowd immediately started chanting: "One more song!" Their lead singer Christian replied with a simple: "OK!" On the last song the crowd went wild and if you take a look at the Video teaser for "A Better Way", you will get an idea of what I am talking about. You can also check out the Severed photo gallery.

With bands like Severed and Heart Beats Still, New York Metal is in good hands!

We will post the interview with Christian soon, for now you can listen to it right here.

Here is the trailer for Severed's "A Better Way". You can expect to see the video very soon and you can expect Horns Up Rocks to have it on the site for your viewing pleasure.

Double Trouble in NYC

After Your Demise finished taking over Santos Party House, when some thought the night was over, the first edition of "Double Trouble" kicked off with fury. The event hosted by Jennifer Arroyo (A.K.A. Ms. JennCity) wrapped up the night with more music, featuring live performances by Desolate and Severed from New York City, and DJ Tim No 37 spinning some Heavy music at full blast.

45 minutes after Your Demise stepped off the stage, New York's own Desolate started what seemed like an eternal sound check. This band believes in perfection and as a result they sounded crisply punishing. From the moment they hit the stage they started getting some movement on the dance floor. Their guitarist and singer where wandering around the dance floor getting the crowd going. I must say that this guys where very impressive at mixing together Death Metal, Hard Core and Melodic Metal. We had a chance to speak with the band after they got off stage, this interview will be posted very soon.

Not long after Desolate exited the stage, it was time for Severed to get on stage and proof what the buzz on the street is all about. Not only can they play their music with conviction, but they have great musicianship. Those who left early missed a furious set full of tight grooves married to crunchy guitars and vocals that sounded like war.

At the end of the evening, we had a chance to chat with JennCity and she told us that the goal is to have "Double Trouble" be a monthly event at Santos Party House. She thanked both Desolate and Severed for their amazing sets, DJ Tim No 37 for spinning the heaviness and the crowd for all their support. This interview will be posted in its entirety very soon.

Events like this one, proof once again that Heavy music is spreading like a disease that can't be contained or stopped. The fans are hungry for more and now more than ever, the scene has a significant amount of strength that can only benefit the artists, the fans and the event promoters. Here are some related links:
