"Evil" Steve Ventura To Be Honored At The Knitting Factory In Brooklyn NY - Purchase Tickets Here!
On Wednesday, February 1st, the New York City Heavy Music scene lost a man that literally bled for the underground music scene! Steve Ventura (A.K.A. Evil Steve), was not only a devoted fan and supporter of all things related to the local music scene (he introduced us to a handful of bands), but he thankfully also captured the essence of this ever-growing scene through the lens of his camera!
On Saturday, March 3rd, the entire New York City Heavy Music scene will pay tribute to "Evil" Steve! The event will take place at The Knitting Factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY. This fundraising event is organized by Dropdown, and all proceeds will go to Steve's family! Here are the 19 bands that will honor the late great Steve Ventura:
Additionally, our founder Jo Schüftan will be co-hosting the show with Tim No 37. We hope to see you all there!

MAX CAVALERA Talks About Soulfly's NEW Album 'Enslaved', His Familia & The Possibility Of A Sepultura Reunion!
Ever since he arrived to the Heavy Music scene in 1984, Max Cavalera has been constantly reinventing mis musical craft. While it was his work with the mighty Sepultura that helped him become an International Metal Superstar, Max has proven through his additional work with Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy that his musical abilities are extremely multidimensional.
Max left Sepultura in 1996, following the murder of Dana Wells (Max's stepson) and the firing of Gloria Bujnowski (Max's wife & Dana's mother) as Sepultura's manager. While many artists would have had a hard time starting a NEW band and making it successful, Max proved with Soulfly that his musical vision is what sets him apart from other artists.
With the release of Soulfly's eighth studio album 'Enslaved', Max has created one of the heaviest records of his career. Thanks to his decision to add NEW members Tony Campos (ex-Static X, Prong Ministry, Posessed, Asesino) and David Kinkade (Borknagar, Arsis), Soulfly has created a contender for album of the year!
Recently, we had the chance to chat with Max about Soulfly's NEW album 'Enslaved', his musical legacy, working with his kids on the NEW album, Soulfly's upcoming touring plans, rejoining forces with his brother Iggor Cavalera (with whom he invented Cavalera Conspiracy), and the possibility of a Sepultura reunion. Check out what Max had to say about all of this!
And hey, there is no question that Max has plenty of musical fire left to burn for years to come and that the Cavalera's reign in Heavy Music will carry on for years to come.
Late lost month, Soulfly revealed the final tracklisting for 'Enslaved'. Today, the band has unleashed a video of the band discussing the production process of their NEW album. You can now watch the video below.

GOD FORBID To Perform Hometown Show With Rob Dukes' GENERATION KILL; Video Shoot For 'Equilibrium' To Take Place!
Recently, New Jersey Nu-Metallers God Forbid announced the name of their next sonic assault. Entitled 'Equilibrium', the anticipation of the bands sixth studio album is building by the minute. Set to be released on March 27 via Victory Records, the album was recorded by Mark Lewis (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER, TRIVIUM), with Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, ALL THAT REMAINS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, CHIMAIRA, DEVILDRIVER) tracking the vocals. The mixing portion of the production of 'Equilibrium' was done by Swedish producer Jens Bogren, who has previously worked with such acts as KATATONIA, OPETH, PARADISE LOST and AMON AMARTH.
Tomorrow (February 24) God Forbid returns to their home state of New Jersey and they promise to destroy Dingbatz (venue were the show will take place at) along with Rob Dukes' Generation Kill! This is what God Forbid's guitarist Doc Coyle had to say about tomorrow's show: "With only one show in 2011 and two months spent in the recording studio, we have been itching to get out and play. We thought it would be a great idea to get into an intimate setting in our home state for the real God Forbid fans. Expect to hear some NEW songs and some old cuts that haven't been played in a while."
- February 24 - Clifton, NJ - Dingbatz
Last year, we had the chance to chat with God Forbid's guitarist Doc Coyle about the present and future of the band. The interview took place at these years Metalsuckfest in New York City, which was the first time that the band performed live since their New Years show on December of 2010. During the interview, Doc made it clear that even though they are facing many obstacles and starting a new chapter in their musical careers, that the band is focusing on creating the best possible sounding record and not on whatever worked or didn't work in the past. Check out our exclusive interview with God Forbid's Doc Coyle.

Scion A/V has partnered with the Melvins for an EP titled 'Scion A/V Presents: The Bulls & The Bees', a five-song collection that marks the band's first original material since their 2010 album 'The Bride Screamed Murder'. The release will be available as a FREE download on March 13 via Scion's OFFICIAL page with NEW song "The War On Wisdom" streaming this Friday on Pitchfork.com.
The Melvins formed in 1983, kicking off what would be a seismic shift in Heavy Music and focusing the epicenter of modern music firmly on the Pacific Northwest for the next decade plus. The band blended Punk, Metal, hard Rock to create a NEW subgenre that has been tagged with a variety of labels including sludge, grunge and doom and won a cult of fans that have yet to waiver some twenty-nine years into the band's career. Buzz Osborne and Dale Crover have been the band's constants (Crover joined in 1984) with Big Business' Jared Warren and Coady Willis joining the band in 2006 for '(A) Senile Animal'.
"The Melvins have remained such a consistent presence in Heavy Music," says Jeri Yoshizu, manager of sales promotions for Scion. "It's an honor to have them create an original release for Scion A/V."
Osborne described Scion A/V Presents: The Bulls & The Bees as "amazing in its noisy calm intensity."

Bostaph says of Barillas, "Luis is a veteran of the Bay Area Metal scene and a welcome addition to the band". Von Epp added, "He's got that Steve Harris/Geezer Butler vibe on the bass which fits perfect with what were doing, not to mention that he's a solid dude". Nelson also added, "Luis is an amazing bassist and a perfect fit for the BLACKGATES sound. He's a true bro who you know from day one will have your back in the trenches."
Bostaph previously stated about BLACKGATES:
"As you can see by our studio blog #1. We're currently hard at work writing the rest of the material to record and release a record this year. we are shopping for a label at this point. The NEW material is friggin' heavy. We can't wait to unleash it on you! The music is definitely maturing and we are honing in on our sound. The first 3 songs we released were literally the first 3 we wrote. They were written musically without a vocalist. Now that we have Dan, the NEW songs are really heavy as hell and have great hooks! That being said. We're looking to play our first show in May and will be playing all our NEW music. Stay posted and we will update you all as we lock the first show in. Hope to see you all on the road Cheers!"
- Paul Bostaph
BLACKGATES earlier in the year finished mastering its first demo, which the band recorded in the San Francisco Bay Area with producer Tim Narducci (SYSTEMATIC, SPIRALARMS).
BLACKGATES is:
- Dan Nelson (ex-ANTHRAX): Vocals/guitar
- Paul Bostaph (ex-TESTAMENT, SLAYER, FORBIDDEN, EXODUS): Drums
- Jeremy Von Epp: Guitar/Vocals
- Luis Barillas: Bass

"Nergal" Talks About The Return Of BEHEMOTH; Band Nominated For Revolver Golden Gods Award!
Behemoth is twelve shows into their European tour now alongside with Cannibal Corpse, Legion Of The Damned, Misery Index, Suicide Silence and Nexus Inferi. Nergal has just sent us his thoughts on shows Behemoth have played so far…
"We are in the middle of this tour and on behalf of the band I must state that's probably the best European run we've done ever! And it's not just courtesy but a fact. Never seen European venues so crowded and enthusiastically reacting to our show. I know, we've been away for a while, the band's future was a big question mark and if you ask me, I have to say I was seriously worried If I can pull it off at all. Now I can finally admit: Fuck yes! I can still get my ass on stage and give my blood, sweat and heart to the people who truly deserve that. These "return" shows have some transcendental touch to it and I can't get rid of the feeling, it's a NEW life injected in band's veins. I am proud. Of my band, myself and all the fans coming to the shows. Thank you. Stay strong and see you soon!"

VISION OF DISORDER Inks Deal With Candlelight Records; Band To Begin Recording First Album In Over A Decade!
Copyright: Tez Mercer Photography
Have you been wondering what is up with VOD? Well, we have good news for all the fans of this fantastic band! It has been confirmed that the Long Island Hardcore Metallers have inked a deal with Candlelight Records! It has also been announced that the band will be entering the studio next month with producer Will Putney (SHADOWS FALL, SUICIDE SILENCE, FOUR YEAR STRONG) to record their highly anticipated new album for a late 2012 release. Cameron Webb (MOTÖRHEAD, SOCIAL DISTORTION, IGNITE, PENNYWISE) will mix the CD. Here is the bands official statement:
"Before the word 'Metalcore' existed… VISION OF DISORDER did. We did what we did because we loved it, not because we thought others might. 20 years later, we're once again at work with the same approach.
"After a newly inked deal with Candlelight Records, we are about to begin tracking on our first studio album in a decade. We are bringing all the elements of what made us unique and ferocious to the table.
"Playing reunion shows over the past few years and seeing such positive responses has truly been inspirational.
"This album is absolutely dedicated to our fans that have stuck by us through our ups and downs. Without them, it would not have been.
"We are excited to be a part of the Candlelight roster. They were a perfect choice for us. After numerous record label woes, it was refreshing to partner with people that are passionate about music — not just profit or agenda."
Added Darren Toms, Candlelight's European label manager: "I have been a fan of the band since the first release many years ago on Roadrunner/Supersoul and after hearing the NEW material, I'm very excited to be working with the band and getting them back to where they need to be in today's market."
This is an interview we conducted with vocalist Tim Williams in December of 2010, in which he discusses the NEW record:

THE CULT Set To Headline The SXSW Auditorium Shores Stage!
The Cult will make its 2012 concert debut when the band plays the South by Southwest (SXSW) Music Festival next month, headlining the "Auditorium Shores Stage" on Saturday, March 17. The "Auditorium Shores Stage" show will be FREE and open to the public, and The Cult will take the stage at 8:00PM.
"SXSW is thrilled that The Cult is returning to play our biggest stage at Auditorium Shores," said Darin Klein, SXSW Festival Producer. "We're excited to hear their NEW tunes and their classic hits. The show is FREE and open to the public, so everyone in Austin should get fired up for a great night of music."
The Cult - Ian Astbury/vocals, Billy Duffy/guitar, Chris Wyse/bass and John Tempesta/drums - will make the appearance in support of 'Choice of Weapon', the band's first NEW studio album in five years, due out May 22 (Cooking Vinyl). Written by founding members Astbury and Duffy and produced by Chris Goss (Queens of the Stone Age, U.N.K.L.E., Masters of Reality) and Bob Rock (Metallica, Bush and The Cult's Platinum-certified Sonic Temple), the album reveals the band at its rawest and most visceral, and reflects the current discontent and destruction of our eco systems, the search for individual meaning against a tide of rampant materialism, narcissism and disconnected lives.
"The title of the record reflects the fact that here we are, we have a choice to make right now," Astbury recently told Rolling Stone. "In a metaphorical sense, a weapon can be a camera, a weapon can be a pen, a weapon can be a statement, a verbal statement, a weapon can be an article of clothing. I think what needs to be said is that we have to start looking inward. Our spiritual lives are almost bankrupt. The material systems are not going to fix where we are."
'Choice of Weapon', The Cult's first NEW studio album in five years, will be released on May 22 (Cooking Vinyl), and the band - Asbury, Duffy, drummer John Tempesta, and bassist Chris Wyse - will tour extensively in support of it.

JOHN5 To Release Solo Album 'God Told Me To' Prior To Hitting The Road With Rob Zombie!
JOHN 5 is pleased to announce the NEW release date for his impressive upcoming full-length solo CD/DVD, 'God Told Me To'. The CD/DVD will be released through Rocket Science Ventures and Sony/RED on May 8th, 2012—just days before he heads out to perform with Rob Zombie on their upcoming co-headliner with Megadeth (see below for tour dates). 'God Told Me To' was recorded and produced by JOHN 5, Chris Baseford (Rob Zombie, Tommy Lee) and Bob Marlette (Sebastian Bach, Black Sabbath) in 2011. The cover art for the album is illustrated by none other than Rob Zombie, who is also tapping JOHN 5 to score the entirety of his upcoming film, ‘The Lords of Salem’.
JOHN 5 doesn’t just play the guitar. His guitar is an extension of his soul and through it his music has become the Frankenstein birth penetrating the ear drums of fans and admirers worldwide. For JOHN 5, the music is not just about playing, but living, breathing, feeling and passion. His impressive resume has seen him work with some of the most renowned musicians in the industry (Rob Halford, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie to name a few), and has cemented his name into the annals of Rock history.
The CD portion of the release features ten painstakingly handcrafted pieces transcending multiple styles—an equal combination of acoustic and electronically influenced tracks—each designed to gradually reveal JOHN 5’s innovative interpretation of his instrument. The orchestration of 'God Told Me To' showcases JOHN 5’s ability to master the subtlety of dynamics, thus emphasizing the overall production value of this body of work. 'God Told Me To' stands tall as a stunning, audible cultural experience.
The DVD portion of the release is hosted by retro-style horror-host Mike Odd and takes a look inside the world of JOHN 5 during his terrifying trip into the realm of 'God Told Me To'. The DVD features footage of JOHN 5 in the studio while working on the NEW album, exclusive videos taken on tour, a peek inside the photo shoot for his 2011 remix album 'Remixploitation', and more.
“I'm so proud of this record, I’ve put more time into this release than any other! It's half acoustic and the other half electric with a tribute to Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen with ‘Beat It’,” states JOHN 5. “The DVD shows me actually recording the songs as well as behind the scenes of a "day in the life" of JOHN 5! This album will take you on a musical journey designed to show more diversity in my playing than in the past. Enjoy!”
JOHN 5 continues to branch out, coupling his solo career with his work in Rob Zombie. His five previous solo albums, up to his 2010 release, 'Art of Malice', continue to break NEW molds in solo instrumentalist work. JOHN 5 also continues to work in 2012 with other artists including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rod Stewart, and is currently working on NEW music for Rob Zombie’s upcoming album.

DARK TRANQUILLITY Premieres Video For "In My Absence"
DARK TRANQUILLITY is proud to present their NEW music video, "In My Absence"! Taken from their latest release, 'We Are The Void' (2010), "In My Absence" is the band's fifth promo clip for the album, and it was filmed by the band themselves on the road, with guitarist Niklas Sundin taking care of the editing/post production duties. Additional live footage was provided by Anders Björler (THE HAUNTED, AT THE GATES) and Nikolas Pegler. Watch the NEW video below.
In regards to this video, Niklas Sundin comments: "I wanted to create a live video that would capture the energy of our show both from the audience's perspective as well as from the stage. To accomplish this, we headed out on our recent Europe/Russia tours equipped with a GoPro HD camera, which was mounted on various objects (guitar necks, vocal microphone, member's bodies etc.) on most of the shows. Despite probably looking pretty weird for those in the crowd that noticed the little device, we arrived home with a lot of interesting footage, and after a lot of editing we're happy to present the final result: A clip for 'In My Absence', filled with an energy and closeness out of the ordinary. Enjoy!"
DARK TRANQUILLITY, the unstoppable Metal machine from Gothenburg, Sweden, has already played over 160 shows all over the world in support of 'We Are The Void', and the band continues to tour, heading to exotic locations such as China, Japan, South Korea, Israel, and Turkey, as well as appearing at European summer festivals in the upcoming months. In fall 2012, they will take a break to focus on a NEW album.

Despite probably looking pretty weird for those in the crowd that noticed the little device, we arrived home with a lot of interesting footage, and after a lot of editing we're happy to present the final result: A clip for 'In My Absence', filled with an energy and closeness out of the ordinary. Enjoy!"

Cattle Decapitation wrapped up recording their NEW album last week and have returned home for a couple weeks before heading out for their European tour with Suffocation! The album was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by Dave Otero of Denver's Flatline Audio. The humans of earth can expect a much more updated production, complete with some surprising guest appearances and the kind of musical exploration that garnered the band droves of NEW fans with 2009's 'The Harvest Floor'. Once again, Cattle Decapitation gives us more extravagantly intense artwork from artist Wes Benscoter and the CD/LP layout are as over the top as the album's concept itself.
Some of the track titles on the NEW album include: Forced Gender Reassignment, A Living, Breathing Piece of Defecating Meat, and The Carbon Stampede. All of the details from the NEW album such as, cover art, track list, guest appearances, and pre-order info will be revealed in the coming months.
Cattle Decapitation is also pleased to announce their participation in the "Occupation Domination 2012 US Tour" with Origin. Vocalist Travis Ryan has posted the following update: "We're fresh out of the recording studio and are very much looking forward to dissecting the auditory canals of all who bear witness to our set on the upcoming US tour with our friends Origin! We're hitting up some areas that we haven't in a while and those who we are missing this time, not to worry… you will be seeing us back out on the road over the coming months as we support our upcoming album. We will also be focusing a lot on international touring on this NEW album, which will keep us away from the states for a bit, so we urge our USA fans who want to see us to be sure to mark when we're coming through their town on their calendars. We are very excited to show the world our NEW material and are looking forward to sharing information regarding our NEW album in the coming month! Stay tuned… stay GORE!"

THY WILL BE DONE Release Video Teaser For NEW EP (Starring Robb Flynn & Jamey Jasta)!!
American Heavy Metal juggernauts THY WILL BE DONE have posted an exclusive video teaser for their anticipated upcoming EP via their recently launched YouTube channel. The video features a sampling of NEW music from their forthcoming release combined with live footage and some familiar faces.
"We, as a band and as individuals, went through a lot during the writing process of this EP.", comments rhythm guitarist Kurt Fraunfelter who also engineered the forthcoming release. "You can hear so many emotions and feelings throughout whether it be in the vocals, the guitar solos, or whatever."
The forthcoming release was mixed by acclaimed Metal producer Zeuss (WHITE CHAPEL, SUICIDE SILENCE, CHIMAIRA, SOULFLY) at Planet Z in Hadley, MA and features six brand NEW studio tracks, including 'You, The Apathy Divine', which the band debuted live on the Stillborn Fest tour with HATEBREED.
"Musically, it is still very much a THY WILL BE DONE release," Kurt elaborates. "However, I think when this NEW EP is played from start to finish you will definitely hear a darker and far more 'moody' vibe than throughout our entire last album. Lyrically, I can assure you there is not one word on this EP that isn't straight from (vocalist) J's heart."
We recently had the chance to talk with J. Costa, vocalist of Thy Will Be Done, about the bands NEW EP, as well as the bands past, present, and future. Check it out!

Max Cavalera Is Suffering From Bell's Palsy - Official Statement Available!
Soulfly frontman Max Cavalera is recovering from a bout with Bell's Palsy, a temporary condition that is a form of facial paralysis resulting from a dysfunction of the cranial nerve VII (the facial nerve) that results in the inability to control facial muscles on the affected side.
Cavalera was diagnosed with a case of Bell's Palsy last week upon his return from Australia. He consulted a doctor and was put on a course of antibiotics and is improving greatly and is expected to make a full recovery imminently. He thanks fans for their concern and well wishes and wanted his supporters to know that he is okay, since the condition manifests in the face and he ultimately didn't want fans to worry.
Of his recent illness, Max said, “I woke up one morning after coming home from Australia and the whole room was spinning. I looked at Gloria and said, 'There's something wrong here.' She said, 'Your face looks weird.' I went to the mirror and couldn't move half of my face. We thought I was having a stroke, so we rushed to the hospital. I learned my condition was called Bell’s Palsy but I'd never heard of that. It's a f---ng weird disease. My right eye won't blink, and half of my face feels like I've been punched by Mike Tyson! It hurts like hell. Anyway, I am leaving for Brazil. The show must go on and this Bell's Palsy ain't gonna stop a Metalhead from his duties. I hope I'll be ok and thanks to all the fans concerned with me. Stay Metal."
We wish Max a prompt healthy recovery!
Soulfly's NEW album entitled 'Enslaved' will be released on March 13, 2012 via longtime label Roadrunner Records, which has been Soulfly's home for the course of its career. The label has also been Cavalera's home for the duration of his career, which began in the '80s as a member of Sepultura, who essentially rewrote the rules of Heavy Music when they arrived on the scene; Max continues to do the same today.
