BARONESS Announce U.S. Headlining Tour Following Their Near Death Experience!
Baroness's first North American tour supporting their critically-acclaimed album, 'Yellow & Green', kicks off May 24 with a performance at Union Transfer in John Baizley's adopted hometown of Philadelphia.
"It's hard to find the words to express how excited we are to announce this tour," explained guitar player Pete Adams. "Seven months ago, who knew when it would be or even if we could get back on the road. But here we are, picking right back up where we left off. A heartfelt thanks to everyone's unconditional love and support for us through, let's hope, the hardest time this band will ever see. We told you we'd be back so let's do this thing!”
Baizley confirmed that drummer Allen Blickle and bass player Matt Maggioni would not be touring with the band via a web posting on Mar. 25 (read it HERE), adding that the pair’s departure is "not sensational” and “does not come with hard feelings". Baizley went on to add that the band has already found two musicians, Nick Jost (bass) and Sebastian Thomson (drums), "who can approach our music with passion and vitality".

BARONESS Issue Very Moving Statement Following The Departure Of 2 Members
BARONESS After Their Near Fatal Bus Crash
Last year, the four band members and five person crew suffered a variety of injuries in the harrowing August 15 accident which saw the band's bus plummet 30 feet down off of a viaduct outside of Bath, England. The East Coast-based band were in the final week of an extensive European tour following the release of their critically-acclaimed double album, 'Yellow & Green'.
The band has just announced that bassist Matt Maggioni and drummer Allen Blickle will not continue touring with Baroness because of the above mentioned accident. A statement from the band follows:
"Nothing can truly prepare you for a brush with death. The event is unique one, singular to the observer. Trust me, you don’t want to invite the experience. Our bus accident left indelible marks, external and internal, physical and mental, you name it. Each of the nine of us went through and continues to go through an entirely different, yet common experience. We are tied to each other by a trauma, which, despite its damage, has been made individually easier through our shared ordeal. While I would never wish the incident on anyone, I cannot imagine going through that wreck alone.
"Thankfully, injury was not dealt out evenly; unfortunately it was dealt in great supply. Each of the nine of us now finds our self in a drastically different circumstance, and we each move forward accordingly. There are two important things to note. First, we are all healthy. We are recovering at different rates, and we’ll all be fine in the end. Second, Baroness has made a commitment to pick up where we left off, and get back out on tour, where we belong. In fact, I am personally staking my recovery on this principle; it gives me direction and something to look forward to (finally).
"However, for some of us, the accident necessitated a change that would prevent them from performing music or touring. It is with sadness that we must announce that Matt Maggioni and Allen Blickle will not continue touring with Baroness. The details of their departure are not sensational; they do not come with hard feelings. Nor are the details going to be public; suffice it to say we’d like to keep to ourselves the finer points of this situation, to respect the privacy of all involved. While the nine of us must respect the significance of the bus accident in Bath, we must also move away from it and get back to our lives. Simply put, some of the effects and injuries were severe enough to prohibit further activity in Baroness. While we would never have asked them to leave; we have the utmost sympathy for this situation, and in earnest, we wish Matt and Allen the best in the future. In their stead, we have found two musicians who can approach our music with passion and vitality and help get us back out on tour to finish what was seemingly cut short last August.

BARONESS Return To The Music Scene Via An Acoustic Song "Stretchmarker" - Video Available!
Baroness's John Baizley and Pete Adams share an acoustic performance of "Stretchmarker" via their website. The clip, recorded in Baizley's Philadelphia art studio, marks the first performance the band members have shared since their horrific bus accident in August.
"Simply put: it's time to get back to it. Since my belated and thankful return to the USA (after our painful test in motor coach-aeronautics) I can definitively say I've exhausted my reserve of potential leisure activities (there's not that many of them, after all)." explained Baizley. "I've come dreadfully close to boredom, and in those moments I can't help but focus on my glaring physical infirmities. Television offers little respite from this relative stasis; I'm sure by now I have sampled every biker-meth-dealer-zombie-low-talking-cop-crime-scene-serial-killer-real-housewife soap opera that is currently being broadcast (and there's no small number of them). I've tried to fill my weekly routine with as much physical therapy as possible but the truth is, PT is not fun, and its benefits come with a great deal of mental/physical/spiritual pain and struggle. Furthermore, I believe I am getting a touch of Stockholm Syndrome when it comes to my doctors and therapists (the highlight of my week should NOT involve a clinic). Music might be the best therapy I have right now. Perhaps it's both the cause and the cure (the thought has crossed my mind); but I feel lost without it. Pete and I have just spent a long week surveying our musical wreckage and, surprisingly, we are quite well and intact. Sure, there are some substantial obstacles to overcome before we write, record or perform any time soon; but we still have everything we need to get 'back in' that particular 'saddle again.' Most of my peers are familiar with such high-school-gym-teacher poeticisms as 'risk equals reward' and 'no pain, no gain;' but did any of us every really believe there was any real wisdom in those adolescent platitudes? I didn't. I am, however, starting to understand the essence of these and many of our other favorite clichés.
"As odd as it might be for me to write these 'updates' after 10 years of personal silence on the internet, I feel that I owe everyone who's voiced or given their support to Baroness a brief synopsis of our situation and more importantly a heartfelt thanks. Honestly, it has made this ordeal much easier on me. What little publicity that surrounds our crash has given voice to so many people who have shared their own stories of injury, trauma and struggle with us, and has furthered my own faith in the communicative and universal strength of music. As every singer on every stage has nightly said, 'we wouldn't be where we are without you.' Thanks everyone. We look forward to seeing you soon. Here's a short clip of a song we wrote."
'Yellow & Green', Baroness's breakthrough double album, has garnered enormous praise on various best of and year-end lists worldwide including reigning over Spin's "20 Best Metal Albums of 2012," iTunes awarding "Take My Bones Away" the distinction of the best metal song of the year, Metal Hammer Germany placing the release at #2 on their year-end list and BBC Music describing the album as a "nearly flawless collection" while giving Yellow & Green the #13 spot in their Top 25 albums of 2012. The 18-track record also landed on year-end lists from Amazon (#46), Close Up Sweden (#4), Decibel (#2), Guitar World (#15), Loudwire (#4), Magnet (#12), Metal Hammer Norway (#4), Metal Hammer UK (#14), Paste (#47), Pitchfork (#27), PopMatters (#4), Revolver (#4), Stereogum (#18), Terrorizer (#2), Treble (#2), Village Voice (#6) and Visions Germany (#4).
Baizley recently did a number of interviews where he discussed Baroness's upcoming plans, telling Decibel Magazine: "I have no doubt that within six months, we'll be playing shows again."
Limited quantities of the 'Yellow & Green' Deluxe 2xLP Hardbound Book Vinyl edition from the band's personal collection are available via Baroness's website (www.baronessmusic.com) with all proceeds going directly to the band.

BARONESS Issue Detailed Letter Following Near Fatal Bus Crash!
BARONESS, in a letter to their fans, have issued their first post-accident update since August. The four band members and five person crew suffered a variety of injuries in the harrowing August 15 accident which saw the band's bus plummet 30 feet down off of a viaduct outside of Bath, England. The East Coast-based band were in the final week of an extensive European tour following the release of their critically-acclaimed double album, 'Yellow & Green'.
Singer/guitar player John Baizley broke his left arm and leg, drummer Allen Blickle and Matt Maggioni each suffered fractured vertebrae while guitar player Pete Adams was treated for minor injuries.
Baroness previously announced all remaining 2012 tour dates are cancelled.
Here is the letter that the band wrote for their fans to be on the loop on the present and the future of the band:
On August 15th, just before 11 am, Baroness and our crew were involved in a very bad crash while on tour. The brakes in our bus failed completely, on a notoriously dangerous, incredibly steep (12% grade) hill in Monkton Combe, UK, on our way from a show Bristol to another show in Southampton. Our bus went entirely out of control, and we had no choice other than hitting a perpendicular guardrail going about 50 mph at the bottom of the hill. The guard rail and the 20 or 30 trees we ploughed through snapped like matchsticks as we went fully airborne and fell down more than 30 feet off of a viaduct to the ground below. Half of the band/crew were asleep while we lost our brakes, and a few of us were awake and sitting in the rear lounge. I was up front with our driver, and I bore witness to the entire thing. Once our brakes failed, the bus could do little more than gain momentum and plummet down the hill. There was nothing anyone on the bus could have done during our descent to avoid the crash, and no one, the local residents, the police or any of us can believe we survived the impact.
Most people who have been in accidents understand the pre-trauma sensation of time slowing down. There were almost two minutes during which I knew we were heading for a collision. It felt like two hours. I remember the sound of the air-brakes failing, and the panicked cursing of our driver as we slowly realized how desperate the situation was. I tried as hard as I could to yell and wake everyone up to prepare for impact. I remember the sounds of confusion from behind me as our collective terror rose. I remember seeing the guardrail split, then a cluster of trees smacking against the front windshield. While we were airborne my eyes met with our driver’s. I knew then that we each shared the same look on our face; and I won’t soon forget it. We had spent enough time in the air to appreciate, make peace with and accept a fate we thought inevitable, and we looked at one another with a horribly silent “goodbye” in our eyes.
When the bus hit the ground, I flew like a missile into the windshield. I can still see the double-paned auto glass turning blue and the spider-webbing cracks spreading outwards from the impact my body made. I hit the glass so hard, that the entire windshield flew from the frame to the ground, and I bounced back inside the bus. I landed on the ledge of the windshield. This came with an immediate and overwhelming pain throughout my body. I surveyed the damage to see instantly that my left leg was very obviously and badly broken. Then I lifted my arms forward to see if either had been damaged. My right arm was covered in burns, blood and broken glass, but working well enough. My left arm was crushed beyond belief, broken in the middle of the bone in my upper arm (humerus), and hanging 90 degrees backwar ds, with many spurs of bone poking through muscles and sinew at the surface of my skin. The bone was shattered into seven free-floating pieces, and my wrist and hand were swinging behind my back, spasming freely. Instinctively, I reached behind my back, grabbed my wrist and re-broke my arm forwards, hugging it to my chest, where it remained for the next three hours until it was cast in plaster. Meanwhile, I watched as some of the band was able to get off the bus and help the others, many of whom were broken-up as well, and several of whom were unconscious. There was blood, glass and diesel fuel everywhere.
While I cannot lift a glass of water to my lips to drink with my left arm and hand, I am still able to play music with it. I picked up a guitar and played the day after I returned. Not without pain (for the time being), but the hand still acts out the creative impulses I give it. I’m told I was quite lucky to have regained any use at all of my hand and arm, though I have sustained quite extensive nerve damage. In spite of this and against my logic and reason, when I pick up an instrument, my hand remembers exactly what to do. It’s far from perfect, and will require a lot of therapy in order to recover mobility and strength, but I am encouraged by the ability I have been allowed. I do not believe in superstitious signs, but I am truly overwhelmed to have been granted the continued use of my hands.
As a result of the crash, I feel encouraged not only to recover, but to move forward with Baroness, as we had been doing every day previous to August 15th. This accident has inflicted an injury which has left its mark on the band: physically, mentally and spiritually. In order to rehabilitate ourselves fully, we must work towards and then past the goals we had prior to the accident. I will consider our immediate recovery a success only on the day we plug back in to play another show.
We cannot allow this accident, which I believe is unrelated to the band or our music, to slow down or stifle what has become so much more than a passionate hobby for the four of us. Through Baroness, we have discovered a method by which we may harness our drive to create, and channel all the emotion, anxiety and pain in our lives into something constructive. Music is the universal means of communication we have chosen to express ourselves. Our message has never been one of the absolute positive or negative, neither black nor white. True life occurs within the shades of grey, and I see this experience form that perspective. It seems only fitting to me that we continue working towards creating and performing again as soon as possible, as this band and its music are the vehicle through which we grow as individuals, artists and brothers. The injury the band suffered is an injury to my family and loved ones. Rather than allow it to become a wedge that forces us apart, I would like to see this experience become part of the glue that strengthens us. We have only begun to accomplish what we set out to do through this band. There is so much more to say, and though we do need to heal up a bit; we will not allow any of those things to be left unsaid.
I have no regrets about touring. I don’t blame music or the touring lifestyle for my current physical state, or for the accident itself. It happened the same way all things happen: randomly. If I was a carpenter, and I was injured on the way to the job-site, I wouldn’t consider quitting my job. That is truly how I see this situation. Baroness doesn’t stop because we got hurt on the way to work. We love what we do much more than that, and we have chosen this path because it offers us an unpredictable adventure. With any adventure that involves travel, and with any real passionate pursuit, one will occasionally come face-to-face with the reality of living on the other side of the yellow line. I didn’t choose to be a musician in order to live a risk-free life, safely avoiding bumps and bruises. I didn’t choose to play music because it seemed like a simple opportunity to make some quick cash. Nor did I ever make the assumption that things would get easier as we progressed.
We can do nothing but attempt to make something constructive and beautiful out of all this disaster, and we are well on the way to becoming active again. I have used this time, stuck inside my own head, to consider the importance of music and Baroness in my life. I can say, after nearly 6 weeks of reflection, that I feel more resolute and passionate about our music than ever. I have come to realize the importance of time in this particular equation, that is, I have none to waste and none to spare. There is no better moment than now, broken and in physical stasis, to devote ourselves more fully towards our art than ever. We cannot allow the traumatic fallout of our crash to cripple us internally. It seems simple: the shows we have cancelled we will reschedule and play in the future. It isn’t going to happen next week nor will it be next month. But it will happen. We will be back on tour as soon as we possibly can.
There was one moment in the crash that cut me deeply. For one heartbeat and one tiny sliver of time, I became disconnected entirely. It was, specifically, the moment I impacted with the glass. In that barest heartbeat of a moment, I came face to face with the infinite. I didn’t see a light, or the tunnel or hear any music. Nor did I get a “best-of” montage of my life. Instead, I felt the tip of my nose brush up against the very same fate I had accepted moments before. I looked into a cold, unreflective mirror. It was the dark, silent, dispassionate logic of the end. I realized in that moment that life can be seen as a light switch: “on” or “off”. When the moment passed and I heard the screaming, felt the pain, and tasted my own blood, I was overcome with joy. I was ecstatic to be back amidst all that chaos and horror because it was alive and real. I finally glimpsed the relative importance of all things. The support of our fans, our friends and our families has real meaning to me now. I say that now honestly, without false humility. Thank you. Everyone.
Till the wheels fall off . . .

BARONESS's NEW Kickass Album 'Yellow & Green' Is Available Right Now!
BARONESS, who recently graced covers of both Decibel and Hails & Horns Magazines, have earned near perfect reviews for the expansive set with Spin describing the release as "alternative rock's brawniest soul-purge" and adding that "beastly event-records like this only come once in a full moon." Alternative Press awarded 'Yellow & Green' four stars, NPR said the album offers "an embarrassment of melodic and riff-based riches," Metal Sucks said this is "Baroness' crossover masterpiece" and the BBC said this is "a beautiful next step in the ongoing saga of Baroness."
Do you agree? Listen to the album right HERE and then let us know what you think by using the comments section below.
'Yellow & Green' was recorded in late 2011 at studios in New Jersey and Dallas with the band reuniting with co-producer John Congleton (Explosions in the Sky, St. Vincent, Xiu Xiu) for the 18-track collection. A series of behind-the-scenes clips chronicling the recording process have been released in the weeks leading up to today's release and can be viewed on the band's You Tube page.
Baroness is currently in Europe for a seven-week tour with upcoming performances at Pukkelpop and the Oya Festival. The band's next U.S. date is a free show at the House of Vans in Brooklyn on Aug. 29. Tour dates are:

Mastodon, BTBAM, Baroness concert review!

On Thursday (4-22-2010) Mastodon / Between the buried and me and Baroness stopped at The Webster in Hartford, CT which I attended. This had been my first show in CT in god knows how long. The last show I probably saw was 100 Demons in some dive bar somewhere maybe 6-7 years ago. (For a good reason)
I arrived in the middle of Baroness’s set. They seemed to be having a good time and rocking out hard, although the crowd seemed to be falling asleep. Nothing compared to the crowds of under 100 I witnessed growing up in CT @ various Hard Core/Metal shows in the mid-late 90’s where people would literally lose their fucking minds. (Those were the days)
Blake Richardson and Brann Dailor are two of my favorite drummers and I haven’t seen either Mastodon or BTBAM yet, so I had been looking forward to this show for quite some time. BTBAM starts up Fossil Genera - A Feed From Cloud Mountain from their latest album The Great Misdirect and I immediately whip out the iPhone to record footage and the douche fuck security guard taps me on the shoulder after about 10 seconds telling me I can’t record video. This aggravated the fucking testicles off me for the remainder of the show. BTBAM’s set was unfortunately short, but they snuck in a few jams from Alaska and Silent Circus. If you have never seen this band I highly recommend it, they are just as amazing live as they sound on their album. I look forward to seeing them headline sometime soon.

Then around 10pm Mastodon comes on and fires up Oblivion. Throughout this first song and the remainder of the entire Crack The Skye album which they played in its entirety, the guitarist Brent was having a meltdown over his microphone which was constantly feeding back and his guitar rig didn’t seem to be loud enough and I doubt was functioning properly. After they took a break post Crack the Skye, which was a tad shaky due to Brent’s anger, they came back in full force. Following a bunch of stuff off Remission/Leviathan/Blood Mountain, which proceeded to melt what was left of my face into the ground, it was all over.
Aside from the technical difficulties and short set of BTBAM I’d say it was a pretty rad show. All the bands came pretty hard (what she said) and did their thing. The one thing that did bother me that has nothing to do with the bands are the spoiled shithead, fuck face un cultured brat CT kids who come out to these shows and act like total fools. Throughout BTBAM’s set I was standing next to some dude who was playing a video game on his iPhone the entire time. I honestly wanted to shove him into the pit for being a tool shed. You are spending $50 to come see a show. Watch the fucking bands douchebag. I can understand tweeting/texting/updating sites/posting pictures and telling your friends how sick the show is, etc. But come on seriously, you are in the presence of amazing musical talent to be consumed by a stupid video game. Maybe BTBAM isn’t your style. That’s totally fine. You still paid good money to come to a show. Watch the god damn bands. Show some respect. You know how brutal it is to live on the fucking road for months at a time and sweat your balls off in front of a room full of people every night to pay your bills? No, you don’t.
Secondly, the venue had a designated bar area way in the back which you COULD NOT GO BEYOND WITH DRINKS. I don’t remember the last time I went to a show and wasn’t allowed anywhere near the stage with a beverage…Absolutely ridiculous. You give out wristbands for a reason.
Conclusion : Mastodon, Between the buried and Me and Baroness are mega talented, nipple igniting beasts of bands and deserve your full, undivided attention. They also deserve to have their fans be able to get shit hammered in front of the stage.
I really have to stop drinking when I write these.
